ALGORITHMIC GARDENS: LAS ART FOUNDATION BRINGS ALEXANDRA DAISY GINSBERG’S LIVING ARTWORK TO BERLIN

ALGORITHMIC GARDENS: LAS ART FOUNDATION BRINGS ALEXANDRA DAISY GINSBERG’S LIVING ARTWORK TO BERLIN

Humans are not the ideal audience for Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg’s artwork: her Pollinator Pathmaker is primarily aimed at bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. In collaboration with scientists from various disciplines, she has developed an algorithm-based tool that creates works of art made from plants. The planting plans are geared not to human tastes, but the needs of pollinators. LAS Art Foundation is now bringing a Pollinator Pathmaker Edition to Berlin for the first time following editions in the UK. The LAS edition is being realised in cooperation with the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. From 20.06.2023, it will be open to the public in full bloom on the museum’s forecourt. The selection of the plants was coordinated with scientists of the museum to be in keeping with the local characteristics of the city.

The Pollinator Pathmaker is not only a colorful symbol of the fight against species extinction, but also a call to action: hobby gardeners are invited to plan and create their own DIY editions of the artwork on the website. Taking into account the size of your own flowerbed and light and soil conditions, the free online tool creates planting plans that protect the flight paths of respective pollinators. Ginsberg thus playfully demonstrates how art can change the way we look at our surroundings – if only by seeing some gardens through the eyes of a pollinator.

COMMON GROUND — CULINARY CREATORS FROM FORTUNA FOREST HOST PERFORMATIVE DINNER

COMMON GROUND — CULINARY CREATORS FROM FORTUNA FOREST HOST PERFORMATIVE DINNER

The word “dinner” doesn’t really do it justice, because this food event is far more about the multi-sensory experience: music, live performance, art and – crucially – the after party. Duo Yulia Roth and Laura Iriondo from Fortuna Forest (and now our sister agency Cee Cee Creative) have made it their mission to present escapism in its most tender form. It’s all about escaping the perpetual noise of the city and reconnecting with nature: lying on your back on the warm forest floor watching the dancing treetops. The feeling of happiness and freedom – this is the goal. For the seventh edition of the Fortuna Forest event series this Saturday (06.05.2023), the pair are bringing the forest – or rather the earth – back to the city. And they are doing so in collaboration with 1__06, an art and culture venue located (until September 2023) between the Kunsthaus Tacheles and the legendary King Size Bar in Mitte.

It’s all about common ground: what connects and nourishes us. Sat at a 20-meter-long table of earth and seeds, you are invited to participate in a “performative” vegetarian dinner. Composer and sound artist Fabian Kalker and dancer Elke Kalupar provide artistic accompaniment for the evening. The event happens in a space where the 1_06 collective have curated art under the motto “under (de) construction”. Currently on display are loud, colorful and provocative installations by Berlin-based Joachim Bosse, forming the perfect antithesis to the concept of Fortuna Forest itself. If after the dinner, installation and performance you are after more, you can round off the evening with a dance and some drinks in the former premises of King Size Bar. Tickets for the event can be found here.

UP THE WALL IN NEUKÖLLN — CLIMBING AT BOULDERGARTEN

UP THE WALL IN NEUKÖLLN — CLIMBING AT BOULDERGARTEN

If you’re still searching for a sport that sticks, then we might have just the thing: Bouldergarten, the perfect climbing getaway tucked away in a quiet Neukölln Hinterhof. The large hall with its high ceilings and open floor plan across three stories allows for a variety of different styles. From short and technical bouldering routes where you can hone your ninja acrobatics to longer, more enduring lead climbs with a harness, this hall has it all. With six grade difficulties, the climbs have a lot of thought put into them and include creative and fun ascents for newcomers. To avoid the weekend bustle, Bouldergarten has an online booking system to reserve your session. In the summer, savor the outdoors with an exterior climbing section just outside the gym, complete with a terrace area to enjoy a drink or bite to eat.

The elevated gym on the third level has views of the entire space, allowing you to spectate whilst you warm up. If you didn’t get sweaty enough on the wall, you can buy a ticket for the on-site sauna or stretch out in one of the yoga classes. Bouldergarten offers lessons that cover all the basic techniques but you can also just grab your friends and have at it. The elation you feel when you summit your first route will take you from feeling like couch potato to climbing superstar. Just one thing for the days after: get ready to feel aches in places you never even knew existed!

A PREVIEW OF A MAJOR NEW MUSEUM — WERKSTATT EXILMUSEUM REMEMBERS REFUGEE LIVES

A PREVIEW OF A MAJOR NEW MUSEUM — WERKSTATT EXILMUSEUM REMEMBERS REFUGEE LIVES

What do Freddie Mercury and Hannah Arendt have in common? Besides being stars in their respective fields, both were forced to leave their home countries due to violence and oppression. They are just two famous figures amongst the millions of people who over decades – indeed centuries – have been uprooted from their native lands. Their stories will be at the heart of the Exilmuseum, a planned exhibition space dedicated to the topic of exile. Located on the site of the former Anhalter Bahnhof near Potsdamer Platz, the museum will focus on those who fled Nazi Germany as well as more recent expulsions. The building is set to open in 2026 but you can already get a preview of what is to come at the Werkstatt, located on Fasanenstraße in Charlottenburg. Run by the Exilmuseum foundation, the space hosts exhibits that introduce you to some of the most gripping exile stories – such as that of architect Victor Gruen, who left Austria for New York in 1938 and went on to invent the modern-day shopping mall.

The Werkstatt also hosts regular events, including on 12.05.2023 a reading and discussion with Barbara von Bechtolsheim, author of the book Hannah Arendt und Heinrich Blücher: Biografie eines Paares about Arendt’s relationship with her husband Heinrich Blücher. On 17.05, the museum will invite women forced to flee contemporary conflicts for the special event I Never Said Goodbye: Women in Exile. Activities are also planned: this Saturday (06.05) you can join a free dance workshop with choreography duo Yamila Khodr and Sami Similae. In short: plenty to keep us occupied until the grand opening of the museum proper in 2026.

INTERACTIVE ART AND AI WORKSHOPS — A MAZE FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS GAMECHANGING MEDIA AT SILENT GREEN

INTERACTIVE ART AND AI WORKSHOPS — A MAZE FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS GAMECHANGING MEDIA AT SILENT GREEN

Back for its twelfth edition, the A Maze festival (10–13.05.2023) is all about highlighting innovation and creativity in the arthouse video games world. Now you might be thinking: I’m not a gamer – and this is just for gamers, right? And, yes, while gamer girls and boys will absolutely be in their element at the festival, the program also offers lots of fun things for those of us who don’t know a low-poly exploration from a nonlinear platformer. The four-day event, hosted at the Betonhalle at Silent Green in Wedding, celebrates any and all kinds of “playful media”. There’s the Sound Effect Souffle, a presentation on sound design that is billed as a “chaotic way to cook up sounds”, and the Cool Cat Disco where VR avatars perform dances based on live body tracking. Meanwhile, writers of all backgrounds can experiment with using AI to develop ideas and make texts more creative at the AI & Words Workshop. Finally: not to be missed is the festival exhibition, which is located in the Betonhalle and includes interactive installations and play elements that blur the lines between art and gaming. So time to head to Wedding and get ready to play – or write or watch or listen…
