CULTURE WITH A VIEW — 21 SUNSETS ON THE HKW ROOF TERRACE

CULTURE WITH A VIEW — 21 SUNSETS ON THE HKW ROOF TERRACE

If there’s one good thing that has come out of the past year, it’s rediscovering the joy of outdoor events. One outside highlight this summer is the open-air program from Haus der Kulturen der Welt, which is returning to its beautiful rooftop terrace in July and August. In keeping with the title, 21 Sunsets invites culture fans to regular concerts, readings and film screenings over 21 (hopefully) warm summer evenings. The rooftop space is perfect for enjoying a drink from the kiosk with sunset views of the Spree, Tiergarten and Hugh Stubbins’ iconic 1950s building. As for the program, things kick off today (15.07.2021) with a literary performance from Wolfram Lotz, Nele Stuhler and Irina Sulaver followed by a screening of The Halfmoon Files by filmmaker Philip Scheffner. The film selection is a collaboration with Arsenal, while music is taken care of by Berlin collective Freak de l’Afrique. We’ve already marked some nights in our calendars: the poetic documentary Taming the Garden by director Salomé Jashi (17.07), a reading from author Enis Maci (22.07.), the Listening Session with Flaneur Magazine (07.08) and an evening with culture magazine Das Wetter (12.08).

CASHEW NUT ICE CREAM AND HOMEMADE COOKIES — VEGAN TREATS FROM VELLGOODS

CASHEW NUT ICE CREAM AND HOMEMADE COOKIES — VEGAN TREATS FROM VELLGOODS

For me eating ice cream is a quintessential part of summer, so how fitting that a new spot for creamy vegan gelato has opened just around the corner from my Friedrichshain home. Vellgoods has only been around since the beginning of July 2021 but has already become one of my go-to places for sweet treats. The shop’s founder Ruben Vellguth has been an enthusiastic ice cream taster since a child, having spent most of his pocket money on scoops of Stracciatella. This memory is what led the former engineer to open up his own parlour for quality – dairy-free – ice cream. All but one of the flavors are made from in-house cashew milk and contain no soya or palm oil.

The range includes classics like chocolate, cashew vanilla, pistachio and lemon and will be expanded in the coming months. My favorite? The somewhat unusual yet flavor-packed curry ice cream. Also worth a taste are the soft, crunchy cookies which, like the ice cream, are made directly behind the counter so you can see the magic happen. The chocolate for the cookies comes from Swiss label Choba Choba while the peanut butter comes from Berlin’s own Twisted Nut. My tip: try the ice cream and cookies at the same time with the ice cream sandwich. Not only does it taste delish, it’s also highly Instagrammable!

ASANAS AND BEATS — TECHNO YOGA AT HASENHEIDE WITH HI YOGA & SEBASTIAAN

ASANAS AND BEATS — TECHNO YOGA AT HASENHEIDE WITH HI YOGA & SEBASTIAAN

Hasenheide park has been throbbing with dance music all summer, but it’s not just the illegal raves: the yogis are also moving to the beat at the techno yoga classes from Hi Yoga. Founded in 2018, the Kreuzberg-based yoga studio has moved outdoors to take you on a hour-long journey of music and motion. The studio offers eight weekly classes in the Neukölln park, led by a team that includes founder Sophie Senoner as well as music producer Sebastiaan Brinkman, who we joined for a Saturday evening class. Dividing his life between teaching asanas and making electronic beats, Sebastiaan blends an easy-going, energetic yoga flow with his own music mixes that are perfectly matched to the pace of the class.

You get to see Hasenheide from a whole different perspective as you bend, dive and balance amongst the tweeting birds and passing cyclists. The class finishes up with an extra-long Shavasana in the early-evening light as Sebastiaan reads out soothing stories. Besides Hasenheide, Hi Yoga also runs outdoor techno classes at Lessinghöhe in Neukölln and at Volkspark Rehberge in Wedding, and you can also join Sebastiaan at Hasenheide for the cosmic vinyasa classes he gives with Vollmond Yoga. The early-bird session at 8h30 on Tuesdays is perfect for working off that morning stiffness so you can start the day with some of your best (yoga) moves.

Hi Yoga techno classes can be booked online as well as via USC and Classpass. For Sebastiaan’s schedule check out Instagram. Don’t forget your mat or towel and check the website for weather updates.

PLANES AND DRINKS AT SUNSET — ROSINENBAR THF AT THE HISTORIC TEMPELHOF HANGAR

PLANES AND DRINKS AT SUNSET — ROSINENBAR THF AT THE HISTORIC TEMPELHOF HANGAR

Drinking at Tempelhofer Feld might not be new, but how about enjoying an ice-cold beer or refreshing cocktail right by the airport? Rosinenbar THF is a pop-up bar located in the former terminal that offers just such a high-flying experience. You reach the venue through the historic Werner-Loebermann-Weg departure halls, through what would have been security, then to the gate and down the steps out into a huge hangar. Usually out-of-bounds, this area is for a short time open to everyone for evening drinks. The venue is named after the Rosinenbomber aircraft which delivered food to West Berlin after the war, and serves up some provisions of its own with a fully-stocked bar plus food from the BBQ. A must-try is the Lufthansa Cocktail, which the flag carrier served to first class passengers in the 1950s and 60s (those were the days). There’s on-board entertainment too, with a line-up of jazz nights, film screenings and DJ sets, such as tonight’s (15.07.2021) reading by actor Marina Frenk followed by sundown music. Grab a seat and enjoy drinks with views of the Feld and the US army C-54 aircraft that still sits in the hangar. Sadly, the Rosinenbar will soon depart – it is only open until 25.07 – so consider this your final call for boarding…

SYRIAN SMALL PLATES, SALADS AND MEZZE FAVORITES — ALEPPO SUPPER CLUB

SYRIAN SMALL PLATES, SALADS AND MEZZE FAVORITES — ALEPPO SUPPER CLUB

In a modest, compact location in Friedrichshain you’ll find Aleppo Supper Club, the brilliant Syrian restaurant serving up fresh middle-eastern dishes packed full of flavor. The eatery’s founder, Aleppo-born Samer Hafez, moved to Germany in 2014 after the war interrupted his studies. Having worked in the restaurant business for several years, Hafez decided to open his own spot for Levantine cuisine in 2018. The fixed menu includes the likes of colorful salads packed with coriander, cucumber and pomegranate, metabel (a fresh hummus and aubergine dip), moreish flatbreads, and ‘awraq aleanab (stuffed vine leaves) – and that’s just the starters. You can order a selection of these small plates to share, but the mains are just as tempting, with delicious rice dishes with fresh ingredients including many vegan and vegetarian options. The restaurant itself has a small, snug interior plus an expansive terrace with 11 tables outside for alfresco dining. The seating area is a sun trap (when the sun is there, that is) making it the perfect spot for chilled Sunday afternoons over late lunch and tea. From 11h, sweet breakfasts are also served and the team offers catering for events – perfect for sharing the Levantine love at your next Covid-safe gathering!
