GETTING THE JUNGLE LOOK AT PILEA LIVING — HOUSEPLANT SHOP FOR TROPICAL SPECIES AND HANDMADE POTS

GETTING THE JUNGLE LOOK AT PILEA LIVING — HOUSEPLANT SHOP FOR TROPICAL SPECIES AND HANDMADE POTS

Just five minutes’ walk from Wedding S-Bahn station is a place that will whisk you away from inner-city Berlin and bring you to the tropical jungle. The name? Pilea Living. This packed plant shop is the product of founders Jue and Dingding’s upbringing in southern China, where newborn babies are named after plant species and ancient trees are worshiped as gods. The pair remember spending their childhoods playing among the giant air roots of Banyan trees and using banana leaves as umbrellas, memories that inspired them to open their greenery-filled store in November 2019.

Walking into the shop, you are greeted with the calming pleasure that only a room full of plants can bring. Vegetation covers the walls and floors and hangs above your head, providing you with instant inspiration to turn your own home into a tranquil oasis. Once you have found the perfect potted friend, Jue and Dingding will gladly provide advice on things like light levels and watering, so even beginners can ensure their plants thrive. The species offered include classics like monsteras and calatheas plus a selection of bonsai trees that make perfect desktop companions. But not to be forgotten is the pilea, which is native to south China and produces flying saucer leaves that give it a unique, otherworldly appearance. Besides greenery, the store also stocks 100 different plant pots, many of which are handmade in small ceramic studios throughout Europe and China, as well as handmade Chinese tea sets with incense sticks and holders. Let the relaxation begin…

MAMA MUUN: FOOD DELIVERY SERVICE WITH WELL-BALANCED MEALS FOR NEW MOTHERS AND CONSCIOUS EATERS

MAMA MUUN: FOOD DELIVERY SERVICE WITH WELL-BALANCED MEALS FOR NEW MOTHERS AND CONSCIOUS EATERS

Our bodies are in a constant stage of change, and they need our attention now more than ever. This is what led Mama Muun founders Shanay and Tabea to develop their range of homemade, balanced meals that are hand-delivered to your door. The menus are specifically formulated for new mothers’ needs, but you don’t need to be a mummy to try them – they are perfect for anyone who wants a healthier diet without spending half the day in the kitchen. And that’s the best bit: the plant-based dishes come ready to eat within ten minutes.

The pair take inspiration from traditional Chinese medicine to create the menus, which come in different varieties with specific energy-boosting benefits. You can buy the meals as a package or mix-and-match your favorites with options for breakfast, lunch and dinner plus snacks in between. Highlights include the talbina barley porridge with cardamom and pistachio to start the day and the “super mama” goji energy treat which is packed full of nutty flavors plus fiber, iron and vitamins. If it’s lunch or dinner you are after, the lemon chickpea wild rice and sweet potato lentil shepherd’s pie are as satisfying as they are nutritious. Whether you’re a new mummy or simply want a healthy alternative to the daily stress of home cooking, the meals offer the perfect body boost. The pair are launching their spring menu in April – we can’t wait to taste it!

BERLIN TRAVEL FESTIVAL DIGITAL — FOUR NIGHTS OF PANELS, FILMS AND WORKSHOPS TO VIEW ONLINE

BERLIN TRAVEL FESTIVAL DIGITAL — FOUR NIGHTS OF PANELS, FILMS AND WORKSHOPS TO VIEW ONLINE

While many of us have been at home dreaming of our first post-lockdown getaway, the folks at Berlin Travel Festival have been busy tracking down the next travel trends. To get you inspired, the team have put together a packed program of destinations, adventures and experiences for their digital event next week (9–12.03.2021). Under the banner “Take a trip! But how?”, the four-day lineup comprises nightly video episodes that feature over two hours of interviews, talks and workshops from trendsetters and nomads that will get your wanderlust flowing – if it wasn’t already, that is…

If your next holiday is more likely to be in Saxony than Sri Lanka, we advise you to check out explorer Christo Foerster and filmmaker Kai Hattermann’s film about “microadventures” – little trips that give you that much-needed freedom feeling without having to cross the earth. Also keeping things bitesize is Jan Sadowsky, the founder of holiday home startup Green Tiny Houses who joins the panel “Wie viel ist wenig?” to discuss how tiny living concepts are making travel slower and more sustainable. Dare to dream a bit bigger? Travel blogger Maggie Haselwanter will gladly get you geared up for a global adventure with stories from her 2020 moped voyage from Switzerland to New Zealand. She joins the Travel Festival team to discuss being a woman who travels and how Corona cut her trip short. Finally, join bestselling author Stephan Orth for fascinating tales on the thrills and spills of couchsurfing through Saudi Arabia. All of these videos can be streamed for free with no pre-registration needed – just switch on and take off…

A.P. BOOKSHOP — A WELCOMING SPACE FOR ART AND DESIGN FANS IN WEDDING

A.P. BOOKSHOP — A WELCOMING SPACE FOR ART AND DESIGN FANS IN WEDDING

Books are windows to the world, which in times of restrictions and closed spaces makes them all the more valuable. If you are looking to escape with a new read, you can do worse than head to Wedding S-Bahn station, where you will find the a.p. bookshop that opened in autumn 2020. The store’s wide window front offers a view into a bright interior home to sofas, high wooden shelves and display cabinets. Head inside and you are greeted with a well-curated selection of picture books, poetry collections and catalogs sorted not alphabetically, but by theme: “Road Trip”, “Mourning” and “Protest” are just some of categories ready to explore.

Launched in collaboration with Callie’s, a non-profit art institution that runs multidisciplinary residency programs in the same complex, the bookshop has a strong focus on multilingual art titles. In addition to the latest monographs, you will also find novels by the likes of French writer Annie Ernaux and poetry by Harryette Mullen. Manager Elijah Jackson and his team strive to maintain a balance between international releases and works from Berlin publishers such as Zero sharp. Their enthusiasm for books and design is felt with every title you browse through: instead of the usual suspects, you come across clever finds like Kapsel, a magazine which presents a Chinese science fiction short story (in German) in every issue. The selection of literature is complemented by artworks and accessories, including Byzantine necklaces by Georgian designer Sopho Gongliashvili and hammocks by Mexican artist Don Agustín Caamal Chimal. The shop is intended as much for inspiration and exchange as for consumption, with regular readings, workshops and lectures planned for when conditions allow. With all this coming up, a.p. will be the one to watch on the Wedding lit scene.
