KITTEN: NEW-KID DELI AND BAKERY FOR BREAD, CAKES AND ISRAELI CLASSICS

KITTEN: NEW-KID DELI AND BAKERY FOR BREAD, CAKES AND ISRAELI CLASSICS

For 10 years Katie’s Blue Cat has been Kreuzkölln’s go-to spot for coffee and cake. Now the cafe has brought Kitten into the world, a deli and bakery next door serving fresh bread, cakes and Israeli dishes courtesy of new Mediterranean collab Middle. Despite the name, Kitten is big, with wood-panelled walls and high ceilings for an almost Berliner Kneipe feel. In fact, the space has been a bakery since 1908, and owner Ngoc Duong jumped at the chance to acquire it so she could supply her neighboring cafe with bread and sweet treats created by a six-strong baking team. While you can always pop in for some still-warm challah bread or a slice of cake, to get the full experience take a seat and let Israeli chef Yuval Belhans serve you brunch, lunch or early dinner. His vegetarian food is as good as it looks: the sabich plate with whole-roasted aubergine, tahini, egg, pickled mango and harissa is a melt-in-the-mouth delight, while the roasted kohlrabi with feta and sesame brings perfectly sweet mildness. The dishes are great to share, and can be paired with a Five Elephant coffee or a fresh beetroot juice (plus beers and wines from June). Don’t forget to take one of the deli jars home – or in the case of the labneh cheese, two jars. (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Savannah van der Niet)

NEW VENICE: THE KÖPERNICK SUMMER SPOT FOR SIGHTSEEING, NATURE AND CANOEING

NEW VENICE: THE KÖPERNICK SUMMER SPOT FOR SIGHTSEEING, NATURE AND CANOEING

Venice is far away – indeed at the moment it’s unreachable. New Venice, on the other hand, is just around the corner. Officially, the area is part of Köpenick, but strolling along the branched waterways and narrow bridges in this enchanted oasis, you get a real holiday feeling. A bit like Venice, you might say – just without the crowds and the noise. Start your stroll by turning left from Fürstenwalder Allee onto the small Rialtoring path, from which several canal-lined side paths run. A nice stopover is the Rialto bridge, which, though less imposing than the Venetian original, offers an idyllic view towards the Müggelspree. On the way back, the New Venice beer garden and restaurant is worth a stop, with apple strudel and waterside views for vacation vibes. For those who prefer some activity on their holidays, you can also rent canoes and paddle boats at various rental stations (e.g. 13kanus) around the area so you can explore the numerous canals from the water. HEIPL: CURATED DESIGNS FOR FORM AND FUNCTION AT HOME AND BEYOND

HEIPL: CURATED DESIGNS FOR FORM AND FUNCTION AT HOME AND BEYOND

It’s true, I have a weakness for small owner-managed shops – especially when the owners are as warm and open-minded as Sabine, who runs the Heipl concept store on Schlesische Strasse. Her life’s work is to search out all kinds of products that help you in your everyday life and make everything a bit brighter and more beautiful. The range of designs in the shop is endless, with delightfully-made pieces for your desk, your kitchen, the children’s playroom and for your next outdoor adventure. The styles range from lively and colourful to elegant and plain. My personal recommendations? Smart notebooks by Korean Stationary Brand wheniwasyoungDonna Wilson’s playful tableware and textiles (a black and white fox-shaped blanket!), timeless jewellery by Ting and functional Hasami porcelain. Why not come in one afternoon, have Sabine make you a cappuccino (with beans from Bonanza Coffee) and have a leisurely browse through the myriad colors, shapes and textures. You’ll really find everything you need here, and everything you didn’t know you needed before. (Text: Lisa Strube / Photos: Heipl)

UP AND COMING BERLIN: DIVERSE FOOD & DRINKS DELIVERED — RECOMMENDED BY SÖREN ZUPPKE

UP AND COMING BERLIN: DIVERSE FOOD & DRINKS DELIVERED — RECOMMENDED BY SÖREN ZUPPKE

Necessity is the mother of invention. And Up and Coming Berlin, a delivery service founded by Omiomi’s Chelsea Turowsky, shows how with innovation you can make something good out of a crisis. With support from Mark Andre Pennock from Bon Bock, this service brings the best of Berlin’s producers to your front door. The aim is to support small producers in gaining more visibility, and the result is a steadily growing and lovingly composed online market featuring food, drinks and home goods. The great thing about it is that besides products from gastro favorites like OttoMotel and The Panda Noodle you can also find lesser-known (but no less great) offerings including sourdough bread from 100 Brote, tortillas from Cintli or halva sweets from 1777 Confectionery. To get them sent directly to your door, order by Wednesday evening for delivery on Friday. Top tip: add a few bottles of wine and kombucha to your basket and you’ll be set for a perfect picnic. TOM ÀDAM: FAMILY-RUN CLOTHING LABEL FOR TASTEFUL ESSENTIALS

TOM ÀDAM: FAMILY-RUN CLOTHING LABEL FOR TASTEFUL ESSENTIALS

Stripped-back design and high-quality materials is the name of the game at family-run Tom Àdam, a men’s underwear and swim shorts label launched in 2015. Their styles are minimalist and refined and the colors natural, with grays, light browns and soft blues for a relaxed palette. Behind the collection is founder Tom Adam Vitolins, who alongside his father approaches design with a level of care and thoughtfulness that could only come from a family business. Whilst swim shorts and boxers are their first love, the Berlin-Parisian label have added Peruvian wool pullovers and most recently unisex pyjamas (pictured) to the collection. Extra thought goes into the material choice, with Italian cotton, rose-bush viscose and modal keeping the footprint low. So whether you’re already planning a day by the lake or just stocking up on essentials, this is your go-to family firm. (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Filips Smits for Tom Àdam)
