MAKING YOUR OWN FINE PORCELAIN JEWELRY: WORKSHOPS AT GOLDEN SPLEEN — RECOMMENDED BY SOPHIE HERZBERG

MAKING YOUR OWN FINE PORCELAIN JEWELRY: WORKSHOPS AT GOLDEN SPLEEN — RECOMMENDED BY SOPHIE HERZBERG

Always wanted to turn your ideas into reality and design your own jewelry? Time to meet Katharina Zink, founder of Golden Spleen, the jewelry studio where you can let your creativity run free. Joining this trained graphic artist for a four-week workshop, we were able to draw on her vast expertise and discover the entire process of making porcelain jewelry. After introductions over tea and biscuits, we tried our hand at ceramic moulding, and by the second attempt we were able to implement our own designs with some confidence. After the porcelain hardened slightly (leather-hard, in the lingo) we were able to cut, shape and emboss it into jewelry pieces. By the third week we were glazing and painting the moulds and, after a final firing in the kiln, the individual pieces were ready to be combined and completed to form an earring, ring or pendant. The pieces make great gifts, while for your more creative loved ones, the workshops themselves are a perfect present. (Text: Sophie Herzberg / Photos: Sophie Döring)

Sophie Herzberg works as a project manager at our partner agency Cee Cee Creative.

PREPARED PIANOS AT THE KW: OPENING THE LID ON A NEW MUSICAL WORLD

PREPARED PIANOS AT THE KW: OPENING THE LID ON A NEW MUSICAL WORLD

When musicians modify their pianos, they open up a whole world of musical possibilities. With a five-day program of piano-based explorations, the KW gallery is celebrating just this. The highlight: 24 “prepared pianos” taken from Italian patron Francesco Conz’s (1935-2010) Archivio Conz collection of avant-garde artworks. The instruments are “prepared” by placing objects between or on the strings, and the exhibition is a testament to the musicians who have experimented with their keys and strings through the ages. These visual displays challenge the idea of the piano as the tool of the privileged virtuoso, and bring together works from major avant-garde artists including Ay-O, Dorothy Iannone, Carolee Schneemann, Nam June Paik, as well as Ben Patterson, whose piano – that most staid of instruments – is turned into a tropical wonder with a whole array of exotic plants. Alongside the exhibited pianos is a series of music and visual performances. Our tip: grab a ticket for Charlemagne Palestine’s show, featuring his minimalist synth and organ sounds. VENUE: TAPAS FOR BREAKFAST AND BRUNCH IN ALL COLORS

VENUE: TAPAS FOR BREAKFAST AND BRUNCH IN ALL COLORS

Opened November 2018 by husband and wife Giacomo and Anna, Venue is a fresh spot on the Weserstraße with a concept: the “morning plate” – an à la carte brunch menu that lets you pick items from five different categories: vegetables, eggs, dairy, meat / fish, and baked goods. Each item arrives in its own small plate, letting individual ingredients shine. Start with a sliced avocado drizzled with a palate-prickling chilli oil and topped with watercress and chopped almonds for texture. Then bite into the gravlax served with horseradish before indulging further with the fluffy mini pancakes sweetened with a fruit and caramel sauce. Combine these delightful dishes with a pink latte (beans courtesy of Berlin’s Fjord Coffee Roasters) and you’ll end up with a brunch that’s as dazzling as Venue’s interior, with its pink rose-patterned wallpaper, diner-style seating and starburst b&w tiles. AMYWHO — THE SALON FOR CASUAL CUTS AND CUTTING-EDGE COLOR

AMYWHO — THE SALON FOR CASUAL CUTS AND CUTTING-EDGE COLOR

I approach getting my hair cut like I do pizza: I’m not so keen on experimenting. So for lunch it’s a margherita, while at the salon I’m content just getting my long mane tamed. The advantage here is you can compare different places to see who’s offering something truly special. And at the Amywho hair salon in the Bergmannkiez, the experience – and results – convinced me they were cut above the rest. Opened in April 2019, the place takes its name from founder Amy, a trained stylist from Leicester, UK, who has been in Berlin since 2013 and in hairdressing for 18 years. The look of the space is just my taste: the colored walls, concrete ceiling, mirrors leaning casually against the wall…not to mention the music. And with sound advice and a perfect cutting technique, the service is spot on, too. My colleague had her balayage done by Amy – a full color expert – and was equally enthusiastic. Whether it’s just a cut and blow-dry or a color transformation, you’ll step out feeling fresh. (Text: Nina Trippel / Photos: Pamina Aichhorn)

A BIO BOOST FOR YOUR WATER — LIQUID HERB EXTRACTS FROM KRUUT

A BIO BOOST FOR YOUR WATER — LIQUID HERB EXTRACTS FROM KRUUT

Whether it’s teas, superfoods or tinctures, natural remedies and adaptogens are everywhere. Enter healing newcomer Kruut, whose little bottles of liquid herbs do things differently: they harness the power of the plants growing right on your doorstep. Founded in 2019 by plant pros Thorben and Annika, this Pankow-based herbal extract maker combines wild plants like goutweed, dandelion and yarrow with an acacia honey and cider vinegar mixture known as oxymel that has been used as a health remedy as far back as the ancient Greeks. The result is a sweet, delicately floral potion that’s perfect for giving an organic boost to your water. Just add a spoon of your chosen tonic – “ruhe” “wohl” and “kraft” are the options – and strengthen your armor against the season’s stress and fatigue.
