DUO SICILIAN ICE CREAM: SILKY-SMOOTH GELATO MADE WITH ITALIAN KNOW-HOW

DUO SICILIAN ICE CREAM: SILKY-SMOOTH GELATO MADE WITH ITALIAN KNOW-HOW

Someone once told me that the best way to test if an ice cream parlour is good is to try the pistachio. If that’s true, Duo Sicilian Ice Cream passes the test – and then some. At Berlin’s only Sicilian-inspired ice cream shop, the pistachio is a creamy, silky delight, its full-flavoured nuttiness down to the ingredients selected. Duo’s founder Antonio Tomasello imports the pistachios directly from Sicily, where he has his own trees. Why the focus on Sicily? Antonio’s roots are on the island, and the family have been bringing their ice cream knowhow to Germany since 1972. Duo shows off this Italian heritage with the “Etna”, a marzipan-tasting creation made from almonds from the island and pistachios sourced from Bronte, near the eponymous volcano. Cannoli pastries, filled vegan croissants and espresso make Duo a good spot for mornings too, though we’re quite happy to do as the Sicilians do and have ice cream for breakfast. FLANEUR FESTIVAL: THE 20.5-HOUR LAUNCH PARTY BRINGING TAIPEI TO HKW

FLANEUR FESTIVAL: THE 20.5-HOUR LAUNCH PARTY BRINGING TAIPEI TO HKW

We first told Cee Cee readers about Berlin-based Flaneur Magazine when it launched in 2013, and it’s been among our favorite reads ever since. Flaneur takes an innovative approach, featuring one street per issue and telling its stories through the people and places there. For the eighth edition, the magazine goes to Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, and the historical area around Kangding/Wanda Road to give readers a glimpse of this microcosm of Taiwanese life. The edition launch is being celebrated with the very first Flaneur Festival, which will bring these visions of Taipei to Berlin for an all-night party. The aim is to create a spatial story by transforming Haus der Kulturen der Welt with immersive events and performances, such as a reading room collaboration between two bookshops, Berlin’s Do You Read Me?! and Taipei’s Pon Ding, featuring hard-to-find authors. A Taiwanese teahouse and bistro pop-up from Cozymazu, calligraphy classes, and a classic tea ceremony complete this journey through the country’s lively culture and history. (Text: Emily Miotke / Photos: Flaneur Magazine, Yannes Kiefer)

JUNGLE FEVER WITH BERGAMOTTE: PLANT HUNTING AT THE XXL POP-UP SHOP

JUNGLE FEVER WITH BERGAMOTTE: PLANT HUNTING AT THE XXL POP-UP SHOP

In our opinion you can never have enough plants. Good job that online plant shop Bergamotte is back with another pop-up edition from 04.–07.9.2019, this time with an XXL sale at Glashaus Berlin. No matter which type of plant you’re looking for – whether hanging, exotic, prickly, colorful or evergreen – they have it all. And there’s more: in addition to the over 4,000 plants, there will also be refreshments from Monkey 47 gin and Selo, culinary delights, and botanical workshops. You can look forward to macramé lessons, do-it-yourself herbal tinctures, pottery courses and, for those starting out on their botanical journey, a “how to make a plant love you” workshop. This event is not just for plant connoisseurs and professionals whose homes are already like a greenhouse, but for beginners too.Come by, get some plant advice, let off steam in one of the workshops and find a new plant for your home. Trust us, there’s always room for it. (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Bergamotte)

FES: GRILL-IT-YOURSELF TURKISH BARBECUE — RECOMMENDED BY JACLYN SIU

FES: GRILL-IT-YOURSELF TURKISH BARBECUE — RECOMMENDED BY JACLYN SIU

Korean BBQ, but make it Turkish. In making Fes the first Turkish BBQ restaurant of its kind, owner Cem Tanriverdi is relying on people readily queuing up for some grill-it-yourself-at-the-table action. And with the choice cuts of meats to pick from (the delightful Angus beef is a personal favorite), it certainly lives up to its BBQ promises. But it’s the side dishes where the kitchen truly shines. Served tapas-style, they’re classically Turkish with distinctly modern twists: Yesil Humus (with a fun basil-almond pesto), Yogurtlu Pancar (where earthy beetroot meets a bright, tart yogurt), Patlican Kabak Ezme (featuring a perfectly smoked aubergine puree) and Rokali Haydari (possibly the creamiest Schafskäse in Berlin). The rice is buttery perfection, and the fresh bread is the ideal vessel for all your dips. Top it all off with some frothy homemade ayran or a glass of rosé — and then ask for seconds. Pro tip: make a reservation as tables fill up fast and you won’t want to miss out. (Text & Photos: Jaclyn Siu)

Jaclyn Siu is a New Yorker (by way of Hong Kong), who has been lucky enough to eat her way around the world, exploring different cultures through their palates and flavors. She’s lived in Berlin since 2017.

BERLIN ART PRIZE: HONORING CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS AT THE AWARD’S SIXTH EDITION

BERLIN ART PRIZE: HONORING CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS AT THE AWARD’S SIXTH EDITION

Berlin now has many art events and prizes, but sometimes the hype surrounding them means the art gets lost. With the Berlin Art Prize – awarded this year for the sixth time – things are different. As co-founder Alicia Reuter explains, awards often go to a small circle of artists, and so with the Art Prize, anyone living in Berlin for more than six months can submit their work. This year, for the first time, the prize will take place in nine different locations throughout Berlin – including Ashley and SMAC – and each location is dedicated a nominee’s solo exhibition. The focus is on community and exchange, providing an invigorating force for the resident art scene. The exhibition will be accompanied by a rich cultural program running from 31.08. to 27.09.2019, including readings, performances and discussions. A visit to the exhibitions is worthwhile and the award ceremony on 14.09 is not to be missed – the party that follows usually runs the whole night.
