BUTTERHANDLUNG: RELAXED CUISINE FROM AROUND THE WORLD — RECOMMENDED BY LENA GERECKE

BUTTERHANDLUNG: RELAXED CUISINE FROM AROUND THE WORLD — RECOMMENDED BY LENA GERECKE

When I moved to Berlin in the summer of 2018, the Butterhandlung was the first restaurant I visited as an official Friedrichshain resident. A year later, I still regularly meet friends here to feast on the truffle tagliatelle (the big portion!), sip white wine and enjoy the three butter variations with the best bread. As the name suggests, the Butterhandlung was once a place solely for the preparation and selling of butter. The name suggests something familiar yet joyous – the classic 250g knob of butter. Simple, yet indispensable (in its vegan form too!). It’s thus understandable that the restaurant simply adopted the former shop’s name. The menu has a lot to offer. From pao de queijo (Brazilian cheese balls) and homemade pasta, to beef ragout and grilled octopus, everyone gets their culinary money’s worth here. The restaurant also includes the neighboring Bar BoBu, into which you can stumble after dinner and end the evening with cocktails and live jazz. “WIE GEHT’S DIR, DEUTSCHLAND?” TAKING STOCK WITH CHRISTOPH AMEND

“WIE GEHT’S DIR, DEUTSCHLAND?” TAKING STOCK WITH CHRISTOPH AMEND

There is a tendency to think that politics and society will always get better — more economic growth, less war and more tolerance. But looking at the climate crisis, the rise of the populist right and clashes over immigration, this seems like a fanciful idea. Following his 2003 book “Morgen tanzt die Welt”, Christoph Amend, editor of Zeit Magazine, is back on the road meeting well-known German personalities and his friends to talk about how Germany is doing, and find out what has become of the country where he grew up, and what needs to change. At the centre of this new book – entitled “Wie Geht’s dir Deutschland?” (“How are you doing, Germany?”) – is the German people: the young, the old, Jewish people, migrants and refugees. In asking these people about their fears and worries, Amend unites different themes like ethnic identity, National Socialism, German reunification and other more everyday concerns. What results is a book that is both timely and valuable in how it presents important questions and topics. It’s this sort of debate and exchange of ideas that will bring the solutions we need. FUTURIUM: A NEWLY OPENED SPACE FOR VISIONS OF TOMORROW’S WORLD

FUTURIUM: A NEWLY OPENED SPACE FOR VISIONS OF TOMORROW’S WORLD

Ever dreamt what it would be like to play noughts and crosses with a robot? Well now you can with the opening on 05.09.2019 of the Futurium. This “Festival of the Future“, celebrates tommorrow’s world with workshops, live music, lectures and guided tours. You’ll get answers to some pretty big questions, and you can contribute your own future predictions too. Conceptually and architecturally, the building is divided into three zones: the lab in the basement for workshops, two studios by the restaurant on the ground floor that host events, and the first floor gallery that includes range of concepts. We were invited to stop by beforehand and were overwhelmed by how the Futurium critically and holistically explores competing visions of the future. The highlight: the Skywalk on the roof, allowing an incredible view of the city and the alternative energy system that powers the Futurium. The future is coming – and you can be there to see it happen, free of charge. (Text: Hanna Komornitzyk / Photos: Renou Schnepp & Jan Windszus)

114 ÜBER MARZAHN: ART AND PERFORMANCE SHOWING THE DISTRICT IN A NEW LIGHT

114 ÜBER MARZAHN: ART AND PERFORMANCE SHOWING THE DISTRICT IN A NEW LIGHT

Marzahn – that’s where all those Plattenbau high-rise housing estates are, right? Well get ready to see another side to this concrete-Kiez with the 114 über Marzahn festival this Saturday (07.09.2019). Among the fruit trees and hiking trails of the Ahrensfelde hills, artists, scientists and musicians will spend twelve hours celebrating the district, proving to new Berliners that there’s culture beyond Neukölln. There will be a botanical walk, a sound walk and tour of the night sky. The focus is on Marzahn’s past, present and future. Meanwhile, artist collective Plastique Fantastique has erected a volcano on the summit, thus making the Marzahn hill Berlin’s highest elevation for one night only. What’s particularly valuable about this project is the concept behind it, developed by Dreitausend e.V.: all participants work on a voluntary basis and no materials will be thrown away, with a clean-up campaign planned ahead of the event as well as on the following day. This will ensure the Ahrensfelde hills will continue to be a meeting place in future. So, grab your hiking boots and head for the summit – Marzahn is much closer than you think.
