The relocation was not far but definitely worth its while. One of Berlin’s best vintage stores has moved from the hidden backyard space to the storefront of the same building. It’s now at the ex Bixel’s and ex ex Bless store. Walking by the front window you’ll see eclectic fashion, shoes and accessories like the green trench coat by Isabel Marant, pumps by Helmut Lang, YSL, Maison Martin Margiela and Comme des Garçons items selected by Austria-born owner Tanya Bednar. The fact that you will only find good quality pieces here is worth mentioning too. So next time you’re passing by Mulackstrasse, take a break and browse through Das Neue Schwarz for some new blacks and other shades.

ULA – MODERN JAPANESE CUISINE AT LAST

Ula opened just a few weeks ago in Mitte – a long overdue upgrade for fine Japanese dining in Berlin. Finally we have a place in the city where you can experience a selection of modern Japanese cuisine that is much more than the ordinary sushi rolls. Setting foot into Ula, it made me feel as if I were in an upscale restaurant in Soho. The menu, created by a Japanese chef who has mastered his culinary artistry at the world-famous Kitcho restaurant in Kyoto, consists of traditional dishes such as “sukiyaki” using wagyu beef that melts in your mouth to “tatsuta-age”, deep fried marinaded chicken, with a twist. You may also enjoy the delightful assortment of sake, shochu and Japanese inspired cocktails like the wasabi Bloody Mary. Even if you think there is no more room in your tummy, you must try the absolutely sublime flowerless fondant au chocolat as a grand finale to your dinner!

BALKON & GARTEN – A LITTLE NATURE MAGAZINE FROM BERLIN

“Wonne” is a great yet rarely used word in German. It translates to “bliss“” and goes well with the month of May – we call it “Wonnemonat Mai”. “Wonne” is also the title of the current issue of “Balkon & Garten“, a tiny nature magazine made in Berlin by Anke Wulffen. I like this small scale mag because it is very modest in a good way (only 150 copies printed!). Its content is user-generated and the order of its pages are randomly selected. Flip through the zine and you’ll find photos, stories, poems and drawings; varying between childish and funny to arty but are all rooted to experiences with nature. I came across this little mag at the Voo Store. The next issue will be themed around “Schauer” (shower); deadline for contributions is June 1st!

HANNA RIX RECOMMENDS: RESTAURANT & CAFÉ HAFENKÜCHE

Hidden in between a rock climbing gym, factories and moored boats, you will find the boat-house restaurant/café “Hafenküche” facing the Spree opposite the “Liebesinsel“. Since a year ago they’ve been serving homemade open-faced sandwiches and hearty and innovative weekly lunch menus at affordable canteen prices. In winter the huge white tiled stove warms you up and in springtime sun aficionados enjoy the riverside terrace. On nice weekends, I recommend you to spend a few hours there with a picnic basket from the restaurant (for ladies, men or families) on a rental boat. The best way to reach Hafenküche is by boat (KM23,9 / Spree; enough space for 10 boats) or via the riverside trail at Rummelsbuger See. The closest parking lot is at Gustav-Holzmann-Street.

TU FAWNING – NEW ALBUM & CONCERT AT HAU

“Anchor” (video), the opening track to Tu Fawning‘s new album, sounded so amazing that I had to hit repeat several times before listening to the rest of “A Monument”. It’s their mix of melancholy meets pop that appeals so much to me, with the hymnic vocals atop the dense and extraordinary instrumentation; not to mention their smart lyrics. In a nut shell, this second album by Tu Fawning is my current favorite and certainly will not end up as a short love affair. “A Monument” was officially released today and the Portland band will introduce their new music live on stage at HAU 2 this Saturday.
