SWEDISH FASHION X 2: VINTAGE ITEMS & SAMPLE SALE

Karin Hannedahl is from Sweden but calls Berlin her current home. Presumably in order to make life away from Sweden easier, she’s opened up a boutique selling secondhand and vintage items, of which most pieces are imported from Sweden. If you’re a fan of the 80’s or 90’s style, “Let Them Eat Cake Berlin” has a lot to offer, e.g. McFree jeans from Sweden, a vast selection of shoes, college sweaters from US (in good condition), plus some weird and extravagant items you’ll never find at any Swedish retailer. Sometime Hannedahl even carries nice racing bikes. Every now and then there are special events at the boutique. From today until Saturday is “Mika loves Cake – Sample and Vintage Weekend”, where besides the usual selection, samples by Swedish fashion designer Mika Modiggård as well as pieces from her personal vintage collection will be offered. You may enjoy prosecco and music at the event too, and who knows, maybe even some cake.

ANDERS EHLIN ON SWEDISH, INVISIBLE BICYCLE HELMETS

I grew up well aware of the importance of safety. My parents were not only patriotic in their choice of Volvos and Saabs exclusively as means of transportation – they were all a given choice for safe family adventures on the road! So my Swedish heart made an extra beat when I recently read about the Hövding (“chief”) bicycle helmet. Combining Scandinavian vanity with the strong heritage of modern car safety thinking, we will now be able to bike with our hair kept in style, as well as our general apearance. Hövding is a miniature airbag in the shape of a collar, that, when alarmed by motion sensors and small gyros, unfolds to a big white cushion in a matter of milliseconds. It does come with quite a hefty price tag, but frankly, when was it ever cheap to be safe and stylish at the same time? The helmet is being released in Sweden as you’re reading this, but is being promoted by the Swedish-German Chamber of Commerce, so expect it to show up soon at your local bikeshop-fashion-store, or use their online shop! A NEW BIRD IN TOWN – “FLAMINGO” CLUB OPENING

There’s a whole lot going on in Berlin’s club scene this season. KTV opened this summer, “Kleine Reise” opened its second branch with “Loftus Hall”, a couple of weeks ago “Prince Charles” celebrated its premiere party, and this weekend Mitte will add another club onto it’s map – the “Flamingo”. The initiators intend to become a Berlin constant, not just a short hype. The idea behind it is to provide a place where different scenes meet to inspire and create room for new projects. The dark interior is full of velvet, mirrors and little niches that bring a definite sense of Parisan flair. Despite its modest size, not only can you get lost easily but there’s plenty of room to discover the unexpected.

BLACK CENTRAL – GROUP SHOW OPENING “BLACK MASS”

The second decade of the 21st century will probably go down in history as the black decade. New rave and neon were all the rage at the beginning of the new millennium but black is the color of now – from iPhones to interior design and fashion, not to mention the world’s economic state. This saturday you’ll be able to see how Berlin artists and nightlife darlings intepretate the “non-color” at the group show “Black Mass” at KTV. Curated by the ever so busy artist and DJ Nomad, the show features works by 44 Flavors, Esther Perbandt, Fubbi Karlsson, and Hugo Capablanca just to name a few.

EXHIBITION OPENING “CRAFTWERK” – HANDMADE SCENERIES

Germans know quilts mostly from watching US movies where old women in the countryside sit and sew. However, illustrator/designer Katrin Rodegast has quilted her “Soft Cover” with the help of computer technology, which took more than four months to complete. The result is a wall quilt featuring more than 270 stitched illustrations telling little stories about our contemporary life. The project was bestowed with several awards such as the “Red Dot Award” and will be on display from Saturday at the Neonchocolate Gallery. Alongside you’ll find some of her porcelain figures she collected from flea markets, repainted and rearranged into a new context. The exhibition “Craftwerk” will also show works by illustrator/graphic designer Tim Brackmann.
