Entering Gipfeltreffen at Görlitzer Park feels like coming to your best friend’s home. The astounding amount of habitués may be read as an infallible sign that you’ve found your perfect second home here, as well as the fact that it comes with some advantages to your own home: you can work calmly, the breakfast is caringly prepared and made with best ingredients, and the warm rolls and their coffee is without equal in the vicinity. The eclectic wooden furniture is comforting and the furnace adds to the subtle warmth and cordiality of the place, as the incredibly friendly staff. That’s why each time you leave Gipfeltreffen you feel better than before. On bright days you can enjoy the sunshine in front of the café all day long. A novelty is a regular evening program featuring screenings, concerts and a night flea market – and a good opportunity to try the small yet exquisite wine menu and to get in touch with the other regulars. MOTION AND EMOTION AT “TANZ IM AUGUST”

The “Tanz im August” festival will be ongoing until the end of the month, showcasing various dance pieces from all over the world. Yesterday evening was the German premiere of “Robert and Maria” – a collaboration between choreographer and dancer Maria Hassabi from New York and Peter Steijn who’s based in Amsterdam and Vienna. On stage, the unlikely couple keeps eye contact during the entire performance and deals with their relationship in slow motion. Perhaps not the easiest piece to watch but still worth doing so, and the second and last chance to see this in Berlin is tonight. Another piece that deals with the tension between male and female on stage is “Kaikou” by Susanne Linke – tough Linke will be accompanied by three male dancers at her world premiere tomorrow night at Radialsystem V.

“GOOD WEATHER” BY SARAH ILLENBERGER

Tonight is the solo show opening of “Good Weather” by the Berlin-based visual artist Sarah Illenberger at the Gestalten Space. Her unique style of analog, three-dimensional collages and installations have been used in various magazines, ad campaigns and projects. The exhibition features a large selection of her three-dimensional illustrations and marks the launch of Illenberger’s first book, available from September (online shop). SWAP DON’T SHOP – SAVE-THE-DATE FOR NEXT FRIDAY!

Another “Skky Swap Market” will be taking place next week and here is how it works for all novices: dig through your closet for pieces you don’t really wear but are in a good condition. Bring them to one of the swap spots (see below) and exchange them for chips. Bring the chips to next week’s swap meet and exchange them for other pieces. And by the way: There will also be clothes donated by fashion designers such as Lala Berlin or Von Bardonitz. The theme this time is “Swap the look of the US metropolises” (whatever that means). In the unlikely event that you don’t find anything, you can also get drinks at the bar because it’s going to be a party as well featuring fashion designer Vladimir Karaleev and DJ Hugo Capablanca spinning music. And in case you have nothing to swap, you can still buy some chips for cash. And last but not least – the proceeds go to Berliner Aids-Hilfe e.V.! The event is hosted by Designer Scouts so if you wish to learn more about the event, check out their website.

TAKE A BREATHER AT NOMORESLEEP COFFEE

It’s not always easy to find a quiet spot in Mitte. In collaboration with guys behind the coffee brand Mykona, the former office of creative agency No More Sleep was converted into a small coffee shop earlier this year. It has become one of the few calm and easygoing places in the area where you can get yourself a cappuccino or – in line with the current trend – a freshly brewed filtered coffee. Due to its location, on one of Berlin’s main fashion streets Mulackstrasse, it’s also nice to people watch through the huge window while enjoying a cup of coffee. However, if this still sounds too “Mitte” to you, the backyard garden which has just opened is a true oasis. A great quiet spot like this is hard to find anywhere in Berlin.
