LANA DEL REY – A RISING STAR

I suppose “irritating” is the best word to describe Lana Del Rey. When I came across her video last month I couldn’t believe that it was really her singing but instead thought that it was one of those Youtube cover versions – that’s how deceiving she is. The self-made clips, her lascivious expression, and the pillow lips may distract you from listening to the songs but will capture you at the same time… strange yet fascinating. For now there are only Youtube videos available, the release of her first single is october 9th.

NIKOLAUS HURLBRINK ON MR. MINSCH’S CAKES

Off the beaten path, at Yorkstrasse 15, you’ll find the cake oasis of Andreas Minsch. Surrounded by numerous plants and flowers and a little fountain, the huge window pane allows you to peep inside the bakery. Here you can watch the confectioner and his apprentices at work. The shop comes in a fifties look, decorated with cream white tiles. To choose your cake you have to check out the assortments in the vitrine. They offer cherry-vanilla crumble, cinnamon rolls, pastries, cookies, and sumptuous cream tartes. On Sundays the assortment is bigger but likewise the number of customers. A piece of cake is three Euros – so fantastic and so huge it feeds two. RATHAUS NEUKÖLLN – A TOWER WITH A VIEW

Watching the city from above is a nice thing to do basically wherever you go. Besides going to Berlin’s famous sights with a view such as Goldelse and the TV tower at Alex, you could also go up the stairs of  Rathaus Neukölln. The tower doesn’t look all that impressive at 68m, but still offers a great view over Neukölln’s roofs’ all the way to Potsdamer Platz and Teufelsberg. For just one Euro and without having to wait in line, this excursion is a must – not only when your friends come visit, but for Berlin residents too.

READ AND LET READ – STORY! LITERATURE WEEK

Hot summer days and reading books make a perfect match. But just in case you’re not laying lazily in the southern sun or if you’d prefer having someone read to you, here’s your event: Story!, the Neukölln Literature Week, starting this Sat for those who understand German. Our tip: Sunday’s theme is “lovesong” and Francesco Wilking, the singer of band Tele, will be giving lectures on crying („Heulen Eins bis Zehn“) among others. Here’s an added bonus to all book lovers and word devotees: we have two tickets plus book packages for Sunday to give away. URBAN GARDENING AT TEMPELHOF

If you have a green thumb but missing a garden and can’t let your talent shine, visit Tempelhofer Freiheit where anyone can get his or her own patch of land. Every Saturday from 14-18h, you may meet the initiators and learn about their project. Allmende-Kontor works on a voluntary and non-profit basis and aims to become more than just another urban gardening project: over time a seed bank and a tool pool will be set up, and furthermore intends to become a store of knowledge as well as a learning venue. Construction materials and certified compost are available but you’re also welcome to bring your own. The Allmende-Kontor is obligated to pay an annual usage fee of 5000€, thus donations are welcome. Find more information here.
