In 2009 the Mexico City native Ramsés Manneck and Julian Boyce from Australia opened up Maria Bonita – which was a blessing for the Mexican cuisine loving Berliners. Till then Viva Mexico on Chausseestrasse (now closed) was the only Mexican restaurant that was actually run by a Mexican cook. Maria Bonita in Prenzlauer Berg was such a successes that they opened up Maria Peligro half a year later in Kreuzberg and the 3rd in the family, Santa Maria in 2010, also in Kreuzberg. Maria Peligro has the most variety on the menu and Santa Maria is great for lunch or as a late night spot, but they’re all amazing and most authentic in Berlin!

If MacGyver was living in Berlin, he would without a doubt be a regular at Klebeland, a shop dedicated to tapes and only tapes… and I mean a whole myriad of tapes, in many different variations. (I even found a transparent one!). In case you don’t have time to visit the Kreuzberg-based store, you can also order the stuff online via their web shop.

TWO DAYS OF MUSIC

TWO DAYS OF MUSIC
Today “Puschenfest” starts at Festsaal Kreuzberg. If you ask me the highlight of this two day festival is the first act, Washed Out. Behind this alias is Ernest Greene, whose music sounds as if recorded in his bedroom (and apparently really is) and the tapes have literally been given a wash. In case you only have time on Friday and are up for Indie-Folk-Elektronica, Chad VanGaalen is someone worth discovering. He is from Canada and we all know the Canadians know their music.
