SUPPORT FROM BERLIN: CHARITY FLEA MARKET

Somalia is currently facing near famine conditions, which is quickly becoming one of the worst humanitarian crisis in decades, due to a severe drought that is considered to be the worst in sixty years (BBC article). This Saturday creative agency HochSandersBarduhn is hosting a flea market at the St. Elisabeth Church in effort to help save lives. Everybody is welcome to sell, shop, or offer his/her favorite home made treats – the entire proceeds will be donated to Doctors Without Borders in Somalia. (Facebook Event)

TAPAS GREEK STYLE

The tavern “Ousies”, my favorite Greek restaurant in Berlin, is based on a special Greek tapas cuisine which supposedly was very popular in the the 60s and 70s. Since then, however, this style of eating has almost ceased to exist. Similar to Spanish tapas you can meet up there with friends to enjoy drinks and order plates of countless delicacies. In no time you’ll see the table become packed with small bowls and dishes, and everyone digging into the niblets from all directions. You must try their special white wine “Malamatina” flavored with pine wood resin! It takes a while to get used to its unusual taste, but ever since my first visit I only drink this house specialty there. Ah, and don’t forget to leave some space for desserts!

News from the Nest: the Kreuzberg-based café has recently opened a co-working space on the first floor of its premises, connected to the café by a spiral staircase. This may not be the perfect place for phone-addicts, but anyone who is looking for a quiet atmosphere is invited to set up the laptop. Tickets are available at the café but you can also reserve your spot online. And the best part is: catering is at your service with a daily menu from breakfast to dinner. Service and food’s qualities vary… the last time I had dinner there, food was yummy and nicely placed on the plate but the breakfast service from the other day was bizarre. I do love their back room with its super long table, which seats your 12+ best friends for a nice dinner.

After many days of waiting and searching, finally a new place for people who appreciate professional and honest culinary visions has opened in Prenzlauer Berg. The Japanese chef, Tsuki Hasegawa, offers beautiful and tasty Japanese morsels such as bento boxes (regular or veggie), salads with exquisite and inventive dressings, and classic rice balls wrapped with nori-seaweed. Sven Schumacher, the pâtissier, presents superb sweets such as rice cakes, tartlets, chocolate with bean paste, matcha and many more. Everything is created with great love for detail and offered for a truly fair deal! Additionally there are Japanese teas plus a lovely smile with anecdotes about the food and its origin. On a side note, if you feel like asking Tsuki about how the current situation in Japan is affecting her business, she will gladly answer you regarding controls and shortages as well as on their commitment to recreate Japanese recipes using local ingredients – which are nothing short of excellent!
