CONVERGING COLORS — NADINE SCHEMMANN’S TEXTILE PAINTINGS AT HAVERKAMPF LEISTENSCHNEIDER GALLERY

CONVERGING COLORS — NADINE SCHEMMANN’S TEXTILE PAINTINGS AT HAVERKAMPF LEISTENSCHNEIDER GALLERY

Gallery owners Caroline Leistenschneider and Philipp Haverkampf could not have chosen a better time for their latest exhibition. Nadine Schemmann’s textile works literally lift the dull Berlin gray – so rich are the greens that shine into the first room, so penetrating are the reds that jump off the wall. The works seem to exist in their own time and place, a world where there is no darkness. Schemmann, who made a name for herself as an illustrator and now works as an artist, views her paintings as an expression of encounters. Words, glances and touches are translated into colors by dumping ink, diluted oil paint and bleach onto linen and letting them slowly develop a life of their own.

Just as people find one other before parting ways, so the colors follow their own paths. They overlap – penetrating deep into the fibers before fading away, with every interaction leaving its trace. Interpersonal relationships are also reflected in how the fabrics are hung: some are mounted on frames so the surface is stretched and all the colors are visible, others are left loosely attached to the wall or floating sculpturally, their folds leaving the patterns concealed. Sometimes the edges of the fabric are neatly sewn, sometimes the loose threads hang down on the floor. While Schemmann’s technique places her in the tradition of color field painting, her art is decidedly personal. As a synesthete, she assigns certain colors to situations, people and things. What may seem abstract to gallery visitors is for Schemmann an archive of memories – a visual color diary which everyone can read.

HACHIKO POP-UP — SUSTAINABLE, VEGAN SKINCARE IN PRENZLAUER BERG

HACHIKO POP-UP — SUSTAINABLE, VEGAN SKINCARE IN PRENZLAUER BERG

While it seems obvious that we should take care of the skin on our bodies just as we do our faces, it’s easy to overlook what’s not in the spotlight. For the 90 percent of our skin below the neck, we can recommend the body care products from Berlin-based Hachiko. The serums and body oils are vegan and unisex, with concentrated and natural formulas that transport nourishing active ingredients and vitamins such as hyaluronic acid and panthenol into the deeper layers of the skin without leaving a sticky or greasy residue. The company has been innovating at its Prenzlauer Berg studio since October 2022, working with key ingredients like Vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, vegetable collagen and bakuchiol. The latter comes from the leaves of the Indian babchi plant and is known for its soothing, regenerating and antioxidant properties that have a powerful anti-aging effect rivaling even retinol (a much sought-after ingredient). The T-01 Intense Hydration & Regeneration Body Treatment combo gives your skin an extra dose of moisture, leaving a radiantly soft finish. Like all the formulas, it absorbs quickly and is suitable for all skin types. Inspired by the loyalty and dedication of the company’s namesake – a beloved dog named Hachiko – the brand is animal-friendly and uses organic and upcycled oils. The company also avoids plastic packaging and plants a tree for every order. To check the products out yourself, stop by the Hachiko pop-up in Prenzlauer Berg (10.03–02.04.2023) for some testers and a cup of tea and a bite.

INNOVATIVE FUSION DISHES COOKED ON AN OPEN WOOD FIRE — KRAMER

INNOVATIVE FUSION DISHES COOKED ON AN OPEN WOOD FIRE — KRAMER

If you’re looking for a restaurant that brings heat to your palate, Kramer is the place to go. Given its location – in the middle of the Kreuzkölln melting pot – it’s fitting that this eatery is a cosmopolitan affair. The food blends Japanese and Filipino cuisines with a Mexican touch, while the kitchen centers on a big open grill fired by the original fuel: wood. The kitchen is staffed by a five-strong team originating from Argentina, Italy, Japan and Germany and led by Fabian Kramer, who has created an experimental dinner menu full of charred, smoky flavors. As for the dishes: how about gently smoked celery mushroom lasagne and a charred beetroot with avocado habanero cream? Or duck dumplings in their own broth served with kimchi and hollandaise?

The food comes in ceramic tableware made by Fabian himself, while the interior is equally creative, with purple tones and a dark-meets-light atmosphere. The addition of plants watered by an automatic irrigation system gives the place a laboratory-turned-glasshouse vibe. To accompany the food, there’s barrel-aged wine by the sommelier Ben Tobis as well as mezcal negronis and mezcal sours. Kramer takes reservations, but you can also drop in for a drink, a few light bites or – our favorite – fully-fledged dinner and drinks. Wood-fired heat to warm our bones? Yes please!

MAKING THEMSELVES HEARD — LILA PODCAST MARKS TEN YEARS OF FEMINIST CONVERSATIONS WITH LIVE EVENT

MAKING THEMSELVES HEARD — LILA PODCAST MARKS TEN YEARS OF FEMINIST CONVERSATIONS WITH LIVE EVENT

It’s been around since 1911, celebrated on 8th March since 1921 and marked with a public holiday (at least in Berlin!) since 2019. We are, of course, talking about International Women’s Day. To mark the occasion, there will be a very special live recording of the Lila podcast at The Playce on Potsdamer Platz. Since launching the show in 2013, hosts Laura Lucas, Lena Sindermann, Katrin Rönicke and Susanne Klingner have been discussing the hottest issues and debates around feminism. During the live show you will have the opportunity to join the debate and ask your own questions. What do feminist politics look like? What is the role of language in feminism? And how can we improve the media’s portrayal of women? All this and more will be the subject of the live episode in which the hosts will reflect on feminism in the last decade: the progress, the challenges and the ongoing drive for equality. After the show, you can join the hosts for a get-together with drinks and R&B/Neo-Soul music from Novine. Sound like your vibe? You can register for the free event online.
