Summer’s just around the corner, and that means barbecue season. There’s nothing like chilling with friends in the sun enjoying a fresh, juicy burger and cold drinks to some tunes. My fave is the classic, no-frills burger that proves that simple quality ingredients are best. And while a fat juicy beef patty is a must-have, the bun can really make or break a great burger; there’s nothing worse than thin soggy buns that disintegrate before you finish eating. But where can you get those great-tasting buns like the ones at your favorite burger joints in Berlin? Well, let me share a secret: chances are they get their Bekabun brioche buns from Bekarei, a beloved Portuguese bakery in Prenzlauer Berg. The team bakes 8000–10,000 buns a day for around 300 burger and BBQ joints all over Germany, but you can also order these goodies online yourself, baked to golden brown perfection (unless you prefer pink or black, that is) and delivered to your door in stylishly-packed boxes of five. The range also includes slider and hot dog buns, and if you have any left over after dinner you can just freeze them until your next grill out. You’re all set for summer!
