Eighteen years ago, Marc Ullrich and Stefanie Harig started out with a simple but revolutionary idea: to bring photographic art to the market at affordable prices and make it accessible to everyone. What resulted was Lumas, a project which has grown to 25 galleries worldwide and is a top choice for anyone who wants to collect art without hidden costs. What makes this gallery different is the larger commissions: 150 to 500 signed copies of each work are produced, as opposed to the handful that is typical for the art market. At the two Berlin galleries and online you can discover works like the black-and-white portraits by photographic pioneer Edward Steichen, the Moroccan dream gardens of Simon Watson and the fictitious architectural worlds of Massimo Colonna. The portfolio has a total of 200 artists including bigger names like Man Ray and Jeff Wall.
One of the many standout photos is Robert Lebeck’s New York 1967, which shows seven teenagers climbing a tree on the banks of the reservoir in Central Park. Their faces are in the shade, but the sun bathes the scene in an unreal light as the youngsters dangle from the branches, their feet in the water. You feel as if you can hear their calls and feel the sun on your own skin – it’s summer in one image. With this photograph Lebeck – who shaped photojournalism in post-war Germany as a Stern photographer – has made a masterpiece, preserving 1960s carefree attitudes that leave the viewer yearning. The image belongs to a series called “Unverschämtes Glück” (“Unashamed Happiness”), an ideal title and a reminder that we can hope this summer will be better than the last. If you want to bring that summer feeling home, you can get 15 percent off all editions with the code L15CEECEE, valid online and in the galleries until 15.06.2021 (cannot be combined with other promotions).
