READ AND EAT — FINE BAGELS AT SHAKESPEARE AND SONS

The Fine Bagels café was meant to be a small addition to the bookstore Shakespeare and Sons, yet it has become a reason of its own to visit the place. Laurel, the owner of Fine Bagels, uses family recipes to create what she was missing in Berlin: authentic homemade bagels. She makes them NY-style, cold and slow-rising overnight, water-boiled, and then baked fresh every day. There are plenty of options, whether you like sweet or savory, with meat, veggie or vegan toppings. Classics like homemade hummus, peanut butter, avocado or goats cheese feature alongside cream cheese and smoked salmon, with optional vegan cream cheese. Laurel’s personal favorite is called “Lunch for Meshka”, a mix of cream cheese, lox, capers, and red onions. We tried almost every combination at the Cee Cee office and are truly addicted! Her partner, Roman, takes care of the literary side to this joint venture, with experience built up over years of working in Prague and Paris. Specializing in English and French books, Shakespeare and Sons creates a perfect harmony of good food and culture together with Fine Bagels café. Now the only hard choice you have to make is whether to browse the book shelf or the bagel shelf first! (Text: Isabelle Kagelius / Photo: Daniel Farò)
