TOAxMELT: TRENDS, TECHNOLOGY AND MUSIC

TOAxMELT: TRENDS, TECHNOLOGY AND MUSIC

Summer time is festival time. But instead of just sun and sound, you can gain so much more from visiting Toa: inspiration and knowledge. Once financed through crowdfunding, Tech Open Air is now the biggest interdisciplinary tech festival in Europe. From 02. to 05.07.2019, more than 160 experts from the worlds of technology, art and science – half of them female – will present their visions for the development of the world. There will be interactive panels and workshops as well as art installations. Given this year’s focus on exchange and cooperation with industries beyond the tech scene, it’s no surprise that the program includes more than 120 external satellite events. And to top it all off, Toa is partnering with the music festival Melt for the first time. Next Wednesday (03.07.2019), the Melt team will curate the music program in Studio 1 as part of ToaxNight, while the Toa team will design the new format cmd+N at Melt (on 20.07.2019). For all those interested in technology, art, science and/or music: show up, and get involved. Perhaps even for free: Write us an email and tell us why we should send you two tickets for both festivals (Toa: 03-05.07.2019 and Melt Festival: 19-21.07.2019). Up for grabs are 2×2 Toa+Melt tickets and another 10 ToaxNight tickets. Because summer time truly is festival time. (Text: Rosa Künzler / Photos: Stefan Wieland & Woodywodsn)

SCHÖNEBERG GASOMETER: DISCOVERING INDUSTRIAL HISTORY AMIDST 360° VIEWS

SCHÖNEBERG GASOMETER: DISCOVERING INDUSTRIAL HISTORY AMIDST 360° VIEWS

Gasometer custodian Sascha Maikowski and his team are self-described fanatics. By 5am, the day’s first ascent of the 78m structure – also known as a gas holder – is already underway to allow visitors a panoramic sunrise from the top. The gasometer once provided surrounding Schöneberg with its gas but with the arrival of natural gas in the mid-90s it lay dormant. Now, those who dare can climb its seven iron rings via a narrow set of stairs at the side. I’m assured during my sunset climb that the ageing structure, finished in 1910, is subject to regular inspection, though I can’t help but notice the height as I move up the rusting stairs. I later learn that the detailed history told by the guides is partly to distract climbers from how high they are. It works. This century-old structure holds countless stories of Berlin’s geographic and social past, richly told as you work your way up. Waiting for you at the top is the biggest reward: a 360 degree view of Berlin, from the white radar domes of Teufelsberg to the green trees of the Müggelberge hills. (Text & Photos: Benji Haughton)

GROSSER GARTEN: THE COUNTRYSIDE ESCAPE WHERE NATURE, CUISINE AND FRIENDS COME TOGETHER

GROSSER GARTEN: THE COUNTRYSIDE ESCAPE WHERE NATURE, CUISINE AND FRIENDS COME TOGETHER

There is a magical place just one hour north of Berlin — a place called Grosser Garten, adjacent to a small enchanted forest in a village called Gerswalde in Uckermark, Brandenburg. There your will encounter wild deer and peacocks in the forest, and the garden itself grows organic greens and hosts colorful lizards and frogs, along with a fish smokehouse Glut & Späne and a lovely Japanese café called Zum Löwen. You may know Glut & Späne’s Micha and his delicious pescetarian dishes from his Berlin outposts. Micha fell in love with this area and spends most of his time there now, pursuing what he loves: everything fish. He smokes his fish caught in the surrounding lakes during the mornings on weekends when the weather is warm enough. The neighboring cafe is also open during the summer months and workshops are organized regularly, including one on wild flower arranging this Sunday (16.06.2019). Plus with a guest house due to reopen this summer, you can extend your stay overnight. So hop in a car or take the train and escape to this little oasis where beautiful nature, good vibes, and great food come together. (Text: Rei Matsuoka / Photos: Sven Hausherr)

WASSERKUTSCHE — ESCAPE TO THE SPREE WITH A HOUSEBOAT

WASSERKUTSCHE — ESCAPE TO THE SPREE WITH A HOUSEBOAT

Looking to bring a little holiday fun into your everyday life but without the effort and all the flying? Then we have good news, because you can do it all here, right in the middle of Berlin – or rather behind the Oberbaumbrücke in Kreuzberg, where you can find the Wasserkutsche (“water carriage”) boat rental service, whose handmade houseboats reflect the name. You can rent them for a day, a whole weekend or even for several weeks and discover the many canals and waterways of the Spree. Or better still, simply stay in Berlin and explore your own city from the water, perhaps by cruising leisurely along the Landwehr Canal or picnicking on the Rummelsburger Bucht. Our verdict after a day on the water? You don’t need faraway countries or exotic beaches for a little vacation. Sometimes even the small moments are enough: Let yourself drift on the water, listen to the gentle splashing and enjoy the scenic view – just a little getaway is perfect. WILD HERB TOURS: DISCOVER EDIBLE PLANTS WITH AN EXPERT FORAGER

WILD HERB TOURS: DISCOVER EDIBLE PLANTS WITH AN EXPERT FORAGER

Every one of your senses – taste, touch, sight, smell, hearing – is awakened on one of Manuel Larbig’s wild herb foraging tours. The biologist, forager and survival expert is on a mission to get Berliners to skip the supermarket and rediscover long-neglected native plants, showing how you can make satisfying, diverse food from ingredients growing on your doorstep – or at least Stadtgut Blankenfelde, just north of Pankow. Walking down the rural paths with Manuel and 11 fellow participants, you realize how alive even Berlin is with edible plants: garlic mustard, chickweed – even wild rocket. As a beginner, gathering food can be daunting, so it’s reassuring to know Manuel can tell tasty cow parsley from the similar but deadly poison hemlock. What follows is a delightful and varied cooking course led by wild herb cook Sabine Naumann. You notice the difference with the ingredients: these are healthy plants, with vivid, strong leaves. The soup with freshly picked goosefoot, daisies, and tangy sorrel proves you needn’t go far for good cuisine. (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Manuel Larbig)

Wild herb tour and cooking courses last six hours and run from April–October.

Shorter tours are available and English tours can be booked with 8+ people.
