NOW ON 2.2 — THE SPICE YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR: CHUNG KING NOODLES

NOW ON 2.2 — THE SPICE YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR: CHUNG KING NOODLES

Since mid-2015, Shanghainese Ash Lee — of the Chinese supper club Chī Fàn — has been serving up some of the spiciest, tastiest noodles in town. Red Szechuan peppercorns are the key ingredient in her floral, head sweat-inducing yet incredibly flavorful bowls of Chongqing noodles. Settled in a hot pool of homemade chilli oil, a large pile of chewy noodles are topped with either minced pork and beef braised with preserved mustard greens or vegan split peas braised in seaweed broth. Having missed out on two separate occasions last year, I stood breathing in the cold air around 11:45h last weekend just for a taste of this divine dish — and the wait was more than worth every hand-freezing second. Head down, slurp up, hot chilli oil found its way into my hair and onto my forehead, but I barley even noticed — I was so deeply entrenched in the giant bowl of noodles. Interested? Then it can’t be stressed enough: Get there early. There are queues. If you miss out, you’ll have to stalk Facebook for the next opportunity. (Text: Devan Grimsrud / Photos: Luke Marshall Johnson)

DRIVE. PRESENTS CLICHÉ BASHING #3 — HOW TO RAISE CHILDREN?

One of the fundamental questions of human psychology, “nature vs. nurture” is a debate worth having an opinion on. Here’s your chance to put your views to the test: The topic of “nurture” will take the stage during the third round of Drive. Volkswagen Group Forum’s stimulating “Cliché Bashing” conversation series. On 1.2.2018 at 19h, moderators Sissy Metzschke and Volker Wieprecht will lead a panel discussion tackling the stereotypes surrounding parenting styles, taking as a starting point the “lead vs. let live” dichotomy. Experts — including life coach and social worker Thomas Sonnenburg — and the public will be invited to weigh in and test out arguments from both ends of the spectrum, from the strict approach to the lenient. Whether or not you’re a parent yourself, this event promises a rigorous evening of debate. It’s free — register here and prepare to have your assumptions put to the test. CONNECTING THE DOTS: MARKING THE LIBERATION OF AUSCHWITZ

CONNECTING THE DOTS: MARKING THE LIBERATION OF AUSCHWITZ

What does the culture of remembrance surrounding the horrors of the Shoah look like 70 years later? On Saturday (27.1.2018) this is the question the Berliner Ensemble will address. The day of remembrance is organized by the author and journalist Mirna Funk in Berlin and Tel Aviv, and interwoven with her own biography. Connecting The Dots explores the gaps and wounds that Auschwitz has left behind across a variety of formats — from workshops to films and discussions. The commemoration day is intended to bring together Jews and non-Jews alike and aims to start a common dialogue on our personal cultures of remembrance: Were there perpetrators or victims in my family? And how can I reconcile the answers to these questions? Connecting The Dots is more than just a day for remembering — but also a reminder to never stop questioning, listening and reflecting. Take a look at the program here. (Text: Kevin Junk / Photos: Berliner Ensemble / Kirsten Becken)

INTO WORLDS: THREE DAYS OF TOTAL IMMERSION

INTO WORLDS: THREE DAYS OF TOTAL IMMERSION

When was the last time you lost yourself an alternative reality? From the 19-21.1.2018, the Berliner Festspiele’s“Immersion” program will launch for the year, inviting visitors to delve into its namesake theme with the conference “Into Worlds. The Craft of Blurring Boundaries”. The three days will bring together artists and leading researchers from around the world to explore three forms of immersive arts: physical techniques and crafts, entertainment formats and spiritual mental practices. Taking place in the Lichthof of Martin-Gropius-Bau, the program offers an extensive range of lectures and workshops that reflect upon the mechanisms of immersion, and the effects and implications of immersive phenomena on our society. Attendees are invited to put theory into practice through virtual reality experiences, sound installations, and artistic interventions — making for a wonderful opportunity to escape the January blues and immerse yourself mentally and physically into other worlds of engagement. (Text: Lucy Thorpe / Photos (clockwise, from left): MGB Presse / Thomas Struth / David OReilly)
