PEOPLE SUMMER FESTIVAL: ART AND MUSIC IN AUGUST 2018

PEOPLE SUMMER FESTIVAL: ART AND MUSIC IN AUGUST 2018

Summer is coming – and with it the new festival season. We have already marked down one event on our calendars: the People Summer Festival brought to you by the Michelberger Hotel Team. This year and for its second edition, the stages and studios of Funkhaus Nalepastraße will be the venue of about 140 artists. The People Summer Festival is non-hierarchical and does not follow a strict program, so well-known musicians will be performing alongside newcomers and artists on the rise. For one whole weekend, the music itself will determine the rhythm of the day. The box office is open now! (Text: Jennifer Prietzel)

People Summer Festival, 18./19.8.2018, Ticket price: €120.00, pre-sale online

BODY UNCONSCIOUS: CLOTHES BETWEEN FASHION AND ART

BODY UNCONSCIOUS: CLOTHES BETWEEN FASHION AND ART

Art, culture, and fashion are interrelated and have a constant influence on each other. Designer Nhu Duong wants to express this idea in her store, Space 31. Here, she sells her own creations along with those of other designers, each time turning her space into something like an exhibition – as is the case with her current event, Body Unconscious. Until March 31, 2018, a carefully curated selection of vintage pieces by Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, Tommy Hilfiger, Maison Margiela, Jean Paul Gaultier, and other legendary fashion houses will be available for purchase. What these designers share is an opposition to classification based on body and gender stereotypes, articulated through their use of unique shapes and lines. Their definition of beauty is far removed from the usual ideals. The clothes – whether they are high fashion or retro 90s – are, therefore, no longer mere articles, but rather wearable art. The selection of the items on display regularly changes during the course of the exhibition. Space 31’s Instagram account lets you stay up to date on upcoming events. MA-MAKAN POP-UP: SPICING UP BRUNCH, MALAYSIAN-STYLE

MA-MAKAN POP-UP: SPICING UP BRUNCH, MALAYSIAN-STYLE

A mound of fragrant coconut rice serves as an anchor for piles of peanuts, crispy fried anchovies, a jammy boiled egg, spicy homemade sambal, slices of cooling cucumber, and unbelievable fish or vegetable curry. This edible palette of sorts is called Nasi Lemak, and it’s the national dish of Malaysia. Thanks to Kaylin Eu and her pop-up Ma-Makan — which serves up homestyle Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine — you can now get your hands on the eye-catching, deconstructed dish up around Berlin, too. The fourth edition takes place tomorrow (9.3.2018) and Saturday (10.3.2018) at Home: Coffee & Food and the menu this time around features tender curry puffs that you’ll want to inhale by the dozens and mouthwatering Onde-Onde – sweet glutinous pandan flavored rice balls filled with sticky palm sugar and rolled in coconut – in addition to the star Nasi Lemak, made according to Eu’s Singaporean family recipe book. As always, getting in early is recommended. AUDI E-TRON PRESENTS SYMPHONY OF NOW — A CINEMATIC LOVE LETTER TO BERLIN

Do you remember the moment you first fell in love with Berlin — this untameable city, teeming with rugged beauty? That feeling is explored in Audi E-Tron’s “Symphony of Now,” a cinematic ode to the metropolis in which director Johannes Schaff melds personal stories and after dark scenes with Berlin’s urban texture. The score, curated by Innervisions’ Frank Wiedemann, brings together Berlin musicians from across the generations, including Samon Kawamura, Gudrun Gut, Thomas Fehlmann and Modeselektor. The feature-length film is the third instalment in the Audi Zeitgeist Project series — a platform for experimental, boundary-pushing creativity. Symphony of Now launches with an exclusive world première including live performances on 14.2.2018, followed by two nights of première screenings. All events are exclusive, but we’re giving away three double passes for both 15.2 and 16.2.2018. EMOTIONAL LIGHT AND SOUND — CHRISTOPHER BAUDER AND KANGDING RAY PRESENT SKALAR

EMOTIONAL LIGHT AND SOUND — CHRISTOPHER BAUDER AND KANGDING RAY PRESENT SKALAR

Ready and willing to submit your senses to the unknown? Through 25.2.2018, the imposing industrial architecture of Kraftwerk Berlin is setting the stage for the kind of emotional rollercoaster you’ll want to be taken on. Controlling the ride are media artist Christopher Bauder and musician David Letellier, aka Kangding Ray, who have brought together their technical expertise and artistic vision to create a light and sound installation of epic proportions: A light performance involving 90 moving lights and 65 motorized mirrors is interwoven with Kangding Ray’s boundary-blurring electronic soundscapes. Launched as part of CTM 2018, “Skalar” explores how light and darkness, silence and sound influence human emotion, in line with the festival’s “turmoil” leitmotif. Live performances on 4.2 and 24.2.2018 promise to add a whole new level of spatial and sonorous texture to the work. Secure tickets now and be prepared to immerse yourself in a multi-dimensional sensory experience that takes experimental techno — and your sense of perception — to lofty new heights. Or email us for the chance to win one of two free double passes to this Sunday night’s 20.30h performance. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Renderings: Whitevoid)
