BOULE, BARS & BOUILLABAISSE — OUR TIPS FOR A WEEKEND ESCAPE IN THE CITY

BOULE, BARS & BOUILLABAISSE — OUR TIPS FOR A WEEKEND ESCAPE IN THE CITY

Despite the not-so-summery weather as of late, this weekend is so colorful and international that your long-awaited summer escape from Berlin might become unnecessary. The first acoustic-culinary excursion begins under the plane trees on Frankfurter Allee, where Listening Bar Ysy is hosting the next round of Taco Thursday (29.05.). On what will hopefully be a balmy evening, Klix, a Berlin-based house DJ, will shape the soundscape — drawing on jazz, funk, and hip-hop. As always, the Thursday menu includes vegetarian, vegan, or meat tacos with homemade salsa and a bright selection of drinks. Just a few tram stops feel like a trip around the world: on Friday (30.05.), Rocket Wine is throwing its tenth Wine Rush garden party in Mitte. Winemakers and friends from Slovenia, Japan, Portugal, and beyond are coming together to share their bottles and stories. It’s all about tasting, chatting, asking questions, and lingering in the back garden.

For those with a refined palate, the evening continues with a special menu from Mathias Gondol, head chef at Les Valseuses and longtime friend of the festival. The soundtrack: electronic rhythms from Laurel. International guests can be found on Karl-Marx-Allee: Nella Beljan Gallery is hosting a two-day Berlin Pop-up (30.05.–31.05.) featuring Dutch vintage label Enso. Usually only found in Antwerp and Amsterdam, the brand is bringing a curated selection of vintage, upcycled, and designer pieces to Berlin. The opening on Friday (30.05.) includes drinks; Saturday (31.05.) is all about discovering the collection in calm daylight. Also on Saturday, but closer to home: Mitte Daily brings back its open-air format at Gipsdreieck, Mitte Daily’s Pétanque Picni — playful neighborhood hangout for Berliners and social souls. If you’re looking to spend your Saturday with friendly faces, live music, and a round of boules, this is your spot. Just bring a blanket and your favorite drink. In the evening, if you’re ready to swap the park for a concert hall and screen, Silent Green is the place: together with Volksbühne, the Kulturquartier is hosting a landmark celebration: 30 years of Editions Mego. The Austrian experimental label marks its grand finale with immersive performances, film screenings, and a sound installation that traces its sonic legacy. It begins at Volksbühne (30.05.) and continues at Silent Green on Saturday (31.05.). Entry to the film and sound installation is free. Also experimental: the traveling exhibition series Loose Ends 001by Exgirlfriend and Soft Launch, stopping at Soma in Kreuzberg on Saturday (31.05.). Thirteen artists explore the tension between voyeurism and self-determination through performance, sculpture, and video. The exhibition asks us to consider what the gaze reveals and what it controls. And if your weekend still calls for a final trip (this time culinary) head to Volk, Berlin’s first oyster bar, for the Berlin Seafood Festival (31.05.–01.06.). In collaboration with Urban Spree, they’re bringing together the freshest fish and seafood from some of the city’s best vendors, including La Sirena NegraSamurai Spoon, and more. Think of it as a journey across the seven seas, accompanied by wine, beer, and the taste of something rare. It’s a weekend to make us think how lucky we are to live in this city.

COWORKING, COMMUNITY, CELLO CONCERTS — TIPS FOR YOUR WEEKEND

COWORKING, COMMUNITY, CELLO CONCERTS — TIPS FOR YOUR WEEKEND

Where are new spaces for creativity opening up? How good does Italian wine taste in Kreuzberg? And what does a cello concert sound like in the largest open space in the city center? We’ve got a few questions for the weekend and we’d love for you to answer them. Schmitd kicks things off with a two-day pop-up (23–24.05.) that has it all: fashion, flowers, art, and a local designer line-up. The sustainable label, which works with production surpluses, invites you to Prenzlauer Berg. After refreshments at Sirene, meet the designers behind the collections, with brands such as A.D.Deertz and Flowers and Moods among them. Another creative chapter is written in Schöneweide where the inclusive artisan platform Drillerqueens is opening its new Bang Bang Studios — a space for community, creativity, and DIY. Starting now, workshops and coworking sessions will happen here, all within a safe space open to anyone who wants to create, experiment, or start something of their own. At its core, this space celebrates one thing: collective spirit. They’re kicking things off this Saturday (24.05.) with an opening party, expect music, snacks, and a fresh look. In addition to all things new, there’s something familiar…

Andreas Murkudis invites you to his annual charity market on Sunday. All proceeds go to local initiatives supporting women*, children, and young people affected by violence — organizations like Wildwasser e.V. and KuB Berlin. A colorful mix of ready-to-wear, accessories, books, furniture, and art awaits — carefully selected by Andreas Murkudis, friends, and brands. And this Sunday (25.05.), all Berlin cellists are invited to Tempelhofer Feld for a musical flash mob. Feldbeben is making the field resonate (literally) and standing up for one of the city’s most special creative spaces. With support from the Deutsches Symphonie-OrchesterAtze Musiktheater, and the initiative 100% Tempelhofer Feld, four pieces will be performed. If you’ve got a cello, a music stand, and a black T-shirt, just show up for rehearsal one hour before the performance. (Meeting point: the meadow behind Luftschloss.) And after the weekend? Good wine can also be sipped on a Tuesday (27.05.). As a preview of the upcoming Berlin Wine Fest, Sublime Wine is hosting a tasting of selected Italian wines, and they need your help. At the Berlin Wine Fest Warm-up, the Kreuzberg-based wine shop will guide you through six Italian varieties. The wines you taste there might appear again at Mezzacantina during the festival. Hopefully, you’ve found a few answers — for your closet, your ears, and a good cause.

OPEN DOORS, GREAT ART & FULL GLASSES: CC CALENDAR TIPS FOR YOUR WEEKEND

OPEN DOORS, GREAT ART & FULL GLASSES: CC CALENDAR TIPS FOR YOUR WEEKEND

This weekend, we’ll be following the loud and colorful — here are our tips. At Renate, there will be mixed beats for a good cause with a new edition of Rise Nights — bringing together DJs from different genres and musical backgrounds in the Berlin club. In addition to their work at the mixing desk, artists such as Juba and Ophélie are involved in charity projects and non-profit collectives. This Thursday (15.05.2025) they will be manning the decks with Baile Funk, Afrotech, Hard Drum and other fluid sounds. All profits go towards the Rise Foundation Berlin, which supports homeless people in Berlin. If you’re strolling along Torstraße, stop off at Eigen + Art Lab, where you’ll find shells and poppies floating on colorful, shimmering surfaces. Artist Marius Glauer transforms photography into installation and sculpture in his solo exhibition. The exhibition corresponds to “Marius Glauer. Wait a Minute” at the Francisco Carolinum Linz, which can be viewed until July 27. The opening on Thursday (15.05.) will be followed up with the presentation of the book “Wait a Minute” and a talk with the artist and the curators of the exhibition on Saturday (17.05.). Between Kottbusser Tor and Görlitzer Bahnhof, other creatives will come together: Heart To Find is planning a pop-up this Saturday (17.05.) combining sustainability and analog music culture. The vintage store will celebrate independent brands, upcycling projects, vinyl and art installations — an exciting niche!

Yuue is also creating space for creatives. The design studio with a love of everyday objects will host a pre-summer open studio in Prenzlauer Berg on Saturday and Sunday (17.-18.05.2025). In addition to their latest products and models, they’ll give insights into their working process to create an accessible exhibition – and open space for inspiration. Soi&Co will serve matching designs in cake form, special teas and free drinks! On another corner in Prenzlauer Berg, the season of backyard flea markets begins. Original Feelings Studio welcomes you to their Fleamarket on Sunday (18.05.)in their sunny backyard. The yoga studio has scoured its community and creative networks for textile treasures for its rails. Browse through their second-hand collection at a leisurely pace with fresh coffee and pastries, and enjoy the day in the sun. If you’d like more art this weekend, it will get under your skin (and in the stomach) at Atelier Sud on Sunday (18.05.). Taktil Berlin‘s round pastries are as wonderfully upbeat as the title Summer Bagels & Tiny Tattoos sounds. And what Laura Hanowski spreads on them is inspired by her grandmother’s chutneys, jams and pickled vegetables. There’s also fresh lemonade and small works of art for your summer skin, precisely crafted by Small Size Fineline Tattoos

SATURATED SURREALISM: UNCANNY PHOTOGRAPHY FROM TOILETPAPER AT FOTOGRAFISKA BERLIN

SATURATED SURREALISM: UNCANNY PHOTOGRAPHY FROM TOILETPAPER AT FOTOGRAFISKA BERLIN

High-gloss, high-camp, playful and weird, the photo magazine Toiletpaper grabs your gaze and doesn’t let go, so bold and saturated are its visuals. The meticulously produced photographs in the Milan-based publication – released biannually by artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari since 2010 – are frequently jarring and unnerving. But boring they are not. Now the duo’s deranged vignettes will be even harder to miss as they migrate from shiny print to the walls of Fotografiska Berlin. The exhibition, ToiletFotoPaperGrafiska, opens tomorrow (09.05.2025) and brings together highlights from Cattelan and Ferrari’s compositions over the years. The pair say the show is akin to being at a party “where everyone is wildly intoxicated and you’re the only sober person in the room”. True to form, tomorrow’s openingwill be a decadent late-night dance-off with performances, live sets and a DJ program of trademark swing-heavy house and disco from the Toy Tonics crew, and a live concert by Myss Keta. And yes, the photographs will be there – not that you could ever miss them…

FREQUENCIES & DELICACIES — A WEEKEND AT THE MARKETS

FREQUENCIES & DELICACIES — A WEEKEND AT THE MARKETS

Sweet tips, fresh from the field! Music and market hustle and bustle await this weekend. First up is the FEZ in the Wuhlheide. Built in the GDR as a pioneer palace, the leisure and recreation center has been a colorful playground with educational and cultural offerings for over forty years. For three days (08.–10.05.), the ultra-modern building will serve as a resonance chamber for new developments in electronic musical instruments and sound technology. At the Synthesizer Fair Superbooth, wander around, try things out, attend concerts and talks, and join workshops for modular synthesizers. Cashmere Radio is also turning the frequency knob with their 10th anniversary this Friday (09.05.) with Fine Tuning. The cuddly radio station will celebrate the occasion for three more Fridays in May — in the way of a session, dancehall and block party. Listen to live performances for over twelve hours this Friday at The Ballroom. There’ll be drinks and the finest music from Cashmere’s musical poetry album. Of course, you can join the celebrations from anywhere via their website or 88.4 MHz Berlin. There’s also an anniversary atmosphere at Mijas in Kreuzberg. The small store for art, gifts and beautiful objects has been offering female, queer and BIPOC creatives a platform to sell for two years, and is welcoming a special guest list for its birthday this Saturday (10.05.). Puchica Pupusas is serving vegetarian pupusas – tortillas with baked-in filling. There will also be horchata – refreshing drinks made from crushed nuts or fruit. You can also have your picture drawn live by Studio Christina Mros or dance into Saturday afternoon to the multiple beats of TRU:L. The Mijas team will serve fresh palomas to toast.

Further west, the African Food Festival invites you to enjoy delicious food and sounds: the Spring Market brings together over 50 stalls with authentic and fusion cuisine, superfoods, fashion and jewelry, as well as skin and hair care on the grounds of Jules B-Part. The line-up features DJs such as Chanella with Afrobeats, Afrohouse or Amapiano (a subgenre of house and kwaito originating in South Africa). On Urban Development Day (10.05.), look behind the scenes at a particularly exciting part of the city: the Haus der Statistik invites you to the KO-Markt – an open day dedicated to cooperation and exchange. The model project for urban development geared towards the common good offers guided tours of the district and various projects. Attend panel discussions and workshops with the project’s visionary actors, or listen to the choir concert and watch the colorful goings-on at Allesandersplatz. Anyone strolling through Schöneweide on Saturday (10.05.) should stop between the riverbank and the yellow brick façade on Wilhelminenhofstraße, at the Slowfood Eco Market, created in collaboration with the Schönevibes Kollektiv neighborhood association, and opening in the AEG industrial park. Where production once took place on a piecework basis, things have slowed down. Every second Saturday, find street food and fairly produced groceries as well as talks, arts and crafts, and workshops on sustainability and conscious consumption on the meadow by the Spree. Get a little more lively on Sunday (11.05.) at the Kink in Prenzlauer Berg – it’s the perfect place to end the week. Island Universe is back for another round and is occupying the bar on Schönhauser Allee for its daytime dance experience. There, party under the afternoon sun to cosmic disco and into the (early) evening hours to funky house. It will be a safe space for music lovers, passionate dancers, and those who prefer the day to the nightlife.
