SHORT DAYS, LONG NIGHTS: CEE CEE’S TIPS FOR THE WEEKEND

SHORT DAYS, LONG NIGHTS: CEE CEE’S TIPS FOR THE WEEKEND

While the sun is at its lowest point in Berlin this Advent Sunday, our anticipation for the upcoming weekend is at its highest. One of the reasons for this is Ungovernable Ingredients in the concrete hall at Silent Green. From Friday to Sunday (19-22.12.2024), the UdK Berlin exhibition will explore the vast construction kit of ingredients that have become integral to contemporary artistic practice: emotions, conflicts, microorganisms and animals. Due to their uncontrollable nature, these elements are increasingly incorporated into art, creating new hierarchies, languages and communities through familiar media like light, image and video. You can visit the exhibition until late in the evening this weekend. Embers.wtf is also celebrating the long nights of this season with its Community Christmas Market. Join the winter solstice celebration and Berlin’s fashion community at Echoes of the Winter Solstice on Friday (20.12.) until 23h. The Christmas market at Steglitzer Kreisel will feature up to fifty local brands, including Snug Life and See Our Vision, along with workshops, live music, DJ sets and performances by Chaos Emblematic and others. Another gathering takes place at the StitchHub Art Pop-up, where creativity will take center stage. Just before Christmas, twelve artists, including ten fashion brands, will come together in Berlin Wedding. Expect upcycled fashion, vintage and handmade jewelry from names like Berlin Osborne and Jess. With music and a free mulled wine in hand, browse through a photography vernissage and art prints this Saturday (21.12.) while picking up a last-minute Christmas gift.

Also on Saturday (21.12.), Frizza will celebrate the season’s end with an Italian Christmas brunch. The bistro offers a five-course wintery and fruity menu that will put Italian food lovers and Christmas enthusiasts in the holiday spirit. For those who prefer a more meditative approach to the start of winter, there’s Rebirth of Inner Light – Winter Solstice at Open Studios on Saturday (21.12). Celebrate the longest night of the year at this yoga studio in Friedrichshain with flowing movement, breathwork and a sound bath. At Terese’s Transalpine Feinkost, a family Christmas market will bring together Terese’s favorite people and the finest ingredients of the pre-Christmas season on Advent Sunday (22.12.). The highlight? Hot mulled wine, affectionately named “HotFrenchMan”, alongside HotCrêpesMaterial, HotFondueDog and HotGulashGirl. Finally, the Reethaus an der Spree will fill with the extraordinary sounds of sound artist Phill Niblock to mark the festive end of the fourth Advent. As part of the artistic program Flussbad, the Soundwalk Collective will present an obituary for the American composer and his sonic legacy. Niblock’s minimalist and experimental sounds are woven into a seamless tapestry that turns nuances into grand vibrations. On Sunday (22.12), a 360-degree sound system will fill the Reethaus with a recording of Niblock’s first posthumous concert, which will take place the evening before in New York. A dark weekend that echoes brightly!

THE SCENT OF PAPER & THE SOUND OF NOW — MAGAZINE RELEASE & CONCERT BY ZWEIKOMMASIEBEN AT ROTER SALON

THE SCENT OF PAPER & THE SOUND OF NOW — MAGAZINE RELEASE & CONCERT BY ZWEIKOMMASIEBEN AT ROTER SALON

Somehow, Berlin changed faster than I realized. For a long time, I was blind to the laments of the city. But at some point between Corona and the death of clubs, rent increases and mass influxes, Amazon delivery vans and residential parking debates, I noticed. One of the few places where time seems to stand still is the Volksbühne. If, like me, you seek solace in the safety of handmade culture, you’re likely to find it next Saturday (14.12.2024) in the soft light of the Roter Salon. Magazine release and concert are the occasion — launching #29 of Swiss music magazine zweikommasieben, dedicated to documenting contemporary music for more than ten years. The current issue, designed by Laurenz Brunner to be hypermodern yet strongly nostalgic, features texts, images, essays and interviews with artists such as Annea Lockwood, Yung Beef, Lonnie Holley, Golin, Moin, Poser, Tobias Koch and Alexander Bachzetsis. The diffuse band “Poser”, which is more a collective of artists pretending to be a band, and the Swiss artist Milyma, who released her album with the promising title “Only Lovers Left A Lie” this year, are invited to the live presentation of the magazine. It reads like the obsessive monologues of that one friend who still plays records and detests Spotify, right? That’s pretty much what it is. A bit like before, but with the new hot shit, without the algorithms — simply comforting. Oh, and for comfort at home, the magazine’s latest issue will be available to buy at a special price. Oh, the smell of freshly printed paper…

THE SECOND WEEKEND OF ADVENT IN BERLIN: CERAMICS, CULINARY OFFERS & COLLABORATIONS

THE SECOND WEEKEND OF ADVENT IN BERLIN: CERAMICS, CULINARY OFFERS & COLLABORATIONS

You better watch out so you don’t miss anything this weekend. Poetry Meets kicks off with the Togetherness Fest, which celebrates its tenth anniversary tonight (05.12.2024) at Heimathafen Neukölln. The international platform for community poetry, music and short film events will open the festival with saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi and dancer Black Pearlaccompanied by the Poetry Meets house band. The main acts will be the French-Cameroonian sister duo Les Nubians and the Belgian-Congolese multi-talent Baloji. Another highlight will be an exclusive film premiere. This weekend, the German Westerwald and Kyoto will meet in the Klub Maison space. Viola Beuscher and her small team work passionately with stoneware clay to create functional and durable pieces to enrich our tables and everyday lives. This Saturday (07.12.), the ceramist is leaving her studio in Frankfurt am Main to present her handmade tableware in Berlin, and to introduce us to her Matcha ritual. In collaboration with Matchasome, she has created a limited number of lovely matcha sets in pink and purple, the perfect contrast to Matcha green. Matchasome will take care of the velvety-sweet matcha from Kyoto’s Uji region as well as the tasting during the pop-up with their in-house specials.

On Friday and Saturday (06.-07.12.) immerse yourself in an intense fragrance experience with Raer Scents. The perfume house for handmade botanical fragrances will open its doors for its first Archive Sale. This weekend, try the house’s perfumes, collaborations and exclusive editions with a drink in hand. Prum will be open all weekend with a store showroom, which has been open since Tuesday (03.12.). Anna Tunikova’s Berlin jewelry label is the perfect place to go if you are still looking for Christmas gifts for your loved ones. The handmade pearl necklaces, bracelets and accessories made from various minerals await you in Berlin Mitte until this Sunday (08.12.). Marktlokal and Berlin Food Stories are teaming up for a Swedish Christmas Bonanza this Advent Sunday (08.12.). Together they will bring the Christmas spirit from the far north to Kreuzberg: pickled herring, Köttbullar and succulent Prinskorv will fill the tables at Marktlokal under the guidance of Swedish chefs Björn & Basil. For the full Christmas experience with secret treats, Xmas raffle and live singing, book your place via DM to BFS. For the grand finale of the second Advent, Platte Berlin and Title are bringing their design communities together for an Archive Market Christmas EditionHomefullofclothesFashionfouvintage and other brands will join the fashionable get-together at the Platte Concept Space on Sunday (08.12.). Throughout the day, browse unique pieces over mulled wine and cinnamon buns and support the Kältebus Berlin with your purchase.

HOLY SHIT! CHRISTMAS IS HERE ALREADY — FIND PRESENTS AT THE CANK CHRISTMAS MARKET

HOLY SHIT! CHRISTMAS IS HERE ALREADY — FIND PRESENTS AT THE CANK CHRISTMAS MARKET

Beloved Berlin: The Christmas season is upon us, bringing the annual promise of creativity and magic to brighten gloomy winter days. What better way to embrace the season than with leisurely gift shopping? As always, Holy Shit Shoppingdelivers on this promise. Despite its cheeky name, this Christmas market is a beacon of the Advent spirit, offering a touch of wonder year after year. This season, starting 30.11, the “Cank” in the iconic brutalist former Hertie building on Neukölln’s Karl-Marx-Straße will be transformed into a temple of consumption, brimming with unique and ethical inspiration. Designers will showcase handmade bags, jewelry and clothing from small-scale manufacturers. These are more than just items for sale, they carry stories of hands crafting one-of-a-kind pieces, of hearts pouring passion into every detail. What could be a more meaningful gift than that? And if shopping stirs your appetite, don’t worry, the Bite Club is on hand to curate a culinary journey as thoughtful as the market itself. Expect more than street food — each bite is an experience. Local DJs complete the scene with beats as fresh as falling snow. Tickets for this celebration of Berlin’s creativity and love for handmade objects are available now. Holy Shit, don’t miss it!

POP-UPS, PLANTS, PANETTONE — THE FIRST ADVENT WEEKEND IN BERLIN

POP-UPS, PLANTS, PANETTONE — THE FIRST ADVENT WEEKEND IN BERLIN

If you’re already freezing, wrap yourself up — preferably in the high-quality pieces from William Fan, who invites you to his Sample Archive Sale at the Boutique Hotel Chateau Royal (29.11.-01.12.). If you haven’t started the Christmas market season yet, find an opportunity this weekend: Malaika Raiss is bringing ceramics, jewelry and accessories to Malaika Market on Saturday and Sunday (30.11.-01.12.), browse her favorites in her Friedrichshain store. Things will get really festive this weekend (30.11.-01.12.) when Herrlich Dining hosts its first Christmas market. The fun dining studio will bring together their favorite artists and independent brands alongside warm drinks, potato pancakes and Buchteln. You are cordially invited to get your Christmas presents from Lea RoeschMaren Lilian or Lisa Loriene. Bring some greenery into your home during the gray season and pay a visit to the Retired Plants Sale at Plantclub.

On Saturday (30.11.), the little plants from Kreuzberg will be looking for a home, and you can find a loving, sustainable gift for Christmas. If you want to spend the first weekend of Advent (30.11.-01.12.) on a soft cloud of Italian pastry, you can’t miss the Panettone & Friends Festival. The traditional Christmas pastry will be celebrated alongside Stollen, Bûche de Noël and Alfajores at Arena Market Berlin. Live music, panettone tastings and free cookie decorating workshops for children complete the Christmas atmosphere. Officina Warehouse & Gallery, the exhibition of a network of artists and friends who share a common vision to create objects with meaning, opens on Advent Sunday (01.12.). Café Bravo and Nature’s Calling support this conviction and provide winter drinks, natural wines & snacks in the backyard of the KW Institute for Contemporary Art. Everyone will find a cozy spot or a warm drink this weekend!
