MULLED WINE MEETS MULTIMEDIA ART — ÆLYSIUM WINTERMARKT AT THE OELGARTEN

MULLED WINE MEETS MULTIMEDIA ART — ÆLYSIUM WINTERMARKT AT THE OELGARTEN

Christmas market season is in full swing, meaning you’re probably no more than a few streets away from a mulled wine with rum and a bag of roasted chestnuts. So far so festive, but if you fancy something a bit different to the usual yule fare, the Ælysium Wintermarkt (until 31.12.2022) is definitely one for the weekend to-do list. Besides classic hearty snacks and hot grog, the market is hosting an outdoor exhibition of 3D works by renowned digital artists. It’s located at Oelgarten, the open-air part of Æve, a club space (formerly Chalet) that’s also showing 3D art as part of House of DiMotion. While you stroll round artisan stands and cozy up round the fire, you’ll be able to gaze at projections from artists and animators Nick denBoerAlexy PréfontaineGavin ShapiroSteven BaltayRuye and Marco Mori. The poppy, Instagram-friendly visuals will be accompanied by a music program that swaps standard Christmas music for a curated program of disco, house and jazz. Mulled wine and multimedia art: a Christmas combo we didn’t know we needed but are well and truly here for.

FURNITURE MEETS ART AT FOUL PLAY — RECOMMENDED BY YOSA PEIT

FURNITURE MEETS ART AT FOUL PLAY — RECOMMENDED BY YOSA PEIT

In recent years, Berlin has become a hotspot for young furniture designers, with small companies and solo designers all setting up shop. Furniture galleries, meanwhile, are harder to come by. Starting tomorrow (02.12.2022), this is changing – at least temporarily – with the opening of the first Foul Play. Half exhibition, half concept store, this event from photographer Frank Wang, FluxGeist and Plusminus Studio is set to take place every six months. Each temporary show brings together five different objects that blur the lines between sculpture, performance and design. They question material and form in new ways, shunning categories and terms like “classic”. Just in time for the indoor season, the sale includes new objects that you can view and bring home – or at least dream of doing so. The transparent “Megapašcale” shelving unit, for instance, was created by the duo Cainelliklaska in collaboration with graphic designer and artist Mark Bohle and combines lightness and mass in an unusual (and excellent) way. Or there’s the futuristic, iridescent “topo-4” lounge chairs by Studio Kern, inspired by aerospace technology and computer design. Other designers/artists on show include Aleksandr DelevFrederik Fialin and Nazara Lázaro. Glamorous and unusual, the objects are not just intended to be seen but to be lived with, touched and discussed – providing aesthetic, sensual enjoyment and prompting new ways of living.

FIVE PLACES FOR THOUGHTFUL GIFTS — POP-UP SHOPPING PICKS FOR THE WEEKEND

FIVE PLACES FOR THOUGHTFUL GIFTS — POP-UP SHOPPING PICKS FOR THE WEEKEND

December is here, which reminds us: there’s only 24 days to go. Already found all your Christmas presents? No? Well, here are five pop-ups that are sure to help you find the perfect gift for your loved ones and maybe even something special for yourself. If, for example, you still don’t have a good pair of pajamas after two years of the pandemic, or if you’ve already worn them all out, look no further than Cruba’s “Sanctuary of Comfort” on Auguststraße tomorrow (02.12.2022). There you can find the limited Tom Àdam X Monocle collection offering comfort and stripes as far as the eye can see. You’ll also find Cruba’s new collection, ceramics by Jeremy Bellina and natural wine by Sips. Meanwhile, over at Backhaus Projects on Weserstraße you’ll find Haekelig with “gaudy-good-weird” bags for your Gen-Z siblings, lovingly handmade by artist Janina Michalski. If you prefer knitwear, head to Leipziger Straße where Nella Beljan is opening her doors to Austrian designer Christina Seewald. A few of her pieces were (briefly) on sale at Voo Store this summer, so you’ll want to come early this time.

After picking up another perfect dress for yourself (oops!) it’s time to get back to the gift search and to Silent Green in Wedding where the winter festival offers lots of inspiration. Here you can find graphics, jewelry, print and textile products of all kinds, vinyls, merch and sundries from tenants of the cultural center. Particularly beautiful are the ceramics by Medi Terra Mica. Smaller, everyday objects are also celebrated at online store Normal Normal, lovingly curated by the artist Hi Yo To. Their first analog pop-up is in Prenzlauer Berg’s Christburgerstraße, run with the furniture and lighting design studio Yuue. Here you’ll find Vietnamese coffee makers next to leather bags, chair cushions and, of course, matching chairs. After so much pop-up, you’ll probably sink into them from exhaustion.

TIPS AND INSPIRATION FROM PRO TRAVELERS — A HALL FULL OF WANDERLUST AT BERLIN TRAVEL FESTIVAL

TIPS AND INSPIRATION FROM PRO TRAVELERS — A HALL FULL OF WANDERLUST AT BERLIN TRAVEL FESTIVAL

Brandenburg or Bulgaria? Hammock or houseboat? Weekend getaway or wellness retreat? If you fancy being somewhere else but aren’t sure where to head, it’s time to visit Messe Berlin for an exotic escape. It’s there that the Berlin Travel Festival is taking place (25–27.11.2022), inviting globetrotting travelers and cultural ambassadors from places ranging from Georgia to Jerusalem. If you want to stay closer, that’s good too: regional districts like Spreewald and Mecklenburg are also represented. Hopping from one stand to the next, you’ll soon discover your new number one travel destination. The fair has it all, from tiny house accommodation to capsule hotels and wonderful Wayks backpacks for adventurous trips. There’s also travel reading material aplenty. Organized by Bernd Neff and his team and returning after a pandemic pause, the festival is very much about the experience. The location has switched from Arena Berlin to the Messe, and while it might be a bit further away, it’s really a stone’s throw given how much there is to discover. Time to cure that wanderlust and temper that travel fever.
