SOUND YOU CAN FEEL — SPATIAL FESTIVAL BRINGS IMMERSIVE MUSIC TO MONOM’S 4D SOUND SYSTEM

SOUND YOU CAN FEEL — SPATIAL FESTIVAL BRINGS IMMERSIVE MUSIC TO MONOM’S 4D SOUND SYSTEM

An extraordinary program of extraordinary art with extraordinary sound: this weekend (25–27.11.2022) a very special festival is taking place at Monom, the studio and listening space located at the Funkhaus complex. Running for three days, Spatial Festival combines sound, art, music and technology. Alongside live concerts by Berlin-based artists like Tobias Freund, William Russel and Robert Henke, the line-up features sound installations by international artists. Among them is the world premiere of Soundwalk Collective and Patti Smith, who will present their joint album “The Perfect Vision” (released tomorrow, 25.11). But this is by no means the only world-class name: the program also features James Blake, Suzanne Ciani, Willem Dafoe, Alex Ebert, Charlotte Gainsbourg…the list goes on and on. Then there are the surprise acts, such as a sound installation by Paul B. Preciado, who is usually associated with philosophy and queer theory. The performances are reproduced using 4D sound, a spatial sound system consisting of 48 omnidirectional loudspeakers and nine subwoofers. The result is an immersive sound experience that makes you feel, fantasize, interact and maybe even get lost – in a good way, of course…

FRAGRANCES AND FRIENDS — SCENT STUDIO POP-UP FROM ATELIER OBLIQUE

FRAGRANCES AND FRIENDS — SCENT STUDIO POP-UP FROM ATELIER OBLIQUE

Mario Lombardo and Vanessa Obrecht, founders of Berlin perfume house Atelier Oblique, have made quite a name for themselves in the fragrance world. Drawing inspiration from their lives and the city they’ve lived in for many years, the duo’s perfumes are full of memories. Part Berlin, part Grasse, part Paris, their collections are handmade in Germany. We’ve long been fans of their elegant Mitte boutique and of course the products themselves: handmade candles that reflect Lombardo’s timeless design taste and perfumes that remind you of Berlin club nights and spring days in April. As Atelier Oblique has grown, so has the network behind it. You can meet this fragrance family yourself starting today (17.11.2022) at the launch of “Scent Studio”, a pre-Christmas pop-up which will see Lombardo and Obrecht bring together exciting boutique labels and fragrance creators from all over Europe.

Until 23.12, fragrance houses from Amsterdam, Bologna, Vienna and Barcelona are setting up shop at Atelier Oblique’s space, including Norwegian Dag Laska, who combines the olfactory landscapes of Scandinavia with clean Nordic design with his brand Son Venïn. He’ll be at the launch to personally present his latest creations, as will Nico Mannino from Swiss label Pernoire. If you fancy meeting these scent experts – or just want to hear from Mario how his Argentinian childhood influenced his perfumes – stop by the Mitte shop from tonight for a chat and a glass of wine

KIMCHI BOWLS, BBQ BURGERS, NYC COOKIES & BIODYNAMIC WINES — FEMALE FOOD DAYS AT POTSDAMER PLATZ

KIMCHI BOWLS, BBQ BURGERS, NYC COOKIES & BIODYNAMIC WINES — FEMALE FOOD DAYS AT POTSDAMER PLATZ

Today marks the start of Female Food Days (17–19.11.2022), a three-day feast at The Playce at Potsdamer Platz featuring street food stands from all over the world. Local newcomers and established gastro players – all run by women – will be setting up shop and we’re here to give you the highlights. At Afropot you can try West African cuisine inspired by Ghanaian home cooking, while over at Love Bites you can grab doughy NYC-style cookies. One must-try is the Korean bibimbap bowl from Fräulein Kimchi, or there’s the smoked pulled pork BBQ burgers from duo Anna and Tom at Big Stuff Smoked BBQ (you might know them from Markthalle Neun). If it’s Italian comfort food you’re after, be sure to pay Gnoccheria Berlin a visit.

Decorated with colorful fabrics, lanterns and hanging plants, the stalls include locally brewed beer from Berliner Berg and lemonades and biodynamic wine from Treat Berlin, who are also doing wine tastings. There will also be an exciting workshop with Piaplants, plus a cozy hangout area with live music and DJs including Lockereasy. To finish up is something sweet: handmade mochi from Daifuku Mochi or (and?) elegant vegan cakes from Mansfield Park. The perfect lunch or after-work meal? We think so.

GLOSSY 3D ART ON THE DANCEFLOOR — HOUSE OF DIMOTION EXHIBITION AT ÆVE

GLOSSY 3D ART ON THE DANCEFLOOR — HOUSE OF DIMOTION EXHIBITION AT ÆVE

Two animated heads bob and warp. One has moss on its face, its hair inexplicably on fire; another has bulging, smoking eyeballs dangling out of their sockets. These 3D creatures look a bit like avatars in a metaverse – if that metaverse was some kind of dystopian rave dungeon. Gross and completely captivating, they’re the creation of animators Marco Moriand Steven Baltay – two of the 26 artists whose work is showing on TV screens at the ÆVE club and cultural center in Kreuzberg until 30.11.2022. House of DiMotion is the name of the show, a walking exhibition spread across the rooms and dancefloors of the former Chalet club. Among the artists exhibiting are big hitters from the 3D art world, including Swedish motion designer Andreas Wannerstedt and Hamburg-born digital artist Marc Tudisco, known for his NFT portraits of cyborgs.

Projected on walls and shown on monitors, the works are sometimes serious and nihilistic, sometimes glossy and kitschy. What they always are is slick and social media-ready. And this being a club, the poppy visuals are accompanied by an electronic music program – played on a Funktion-One sound system, naturally…

House of DiMotion runs until 30.11.2022 at ÆVE, Vor dem Schlesischen Tor 3, 10997 Berlin–Kreuzberg; map

You can pay for a time slot for the exhibition online and on the door.

CRAFTING A STORY, LIVE ON STAGE — SHOW DON’T TELL SHOW AT THE VOLKSBÜHNE’S ROTER SALON

CRAFTING A STORY, LIVE ON STAGE — SHOW DON’T TELL SHOW AT THE VOLKSBÜHNE’S ROTER SALON

Literary events tend to be much of a muchness: an author reads from their book, explains a bit about the background and takes questions from the audience. Show Don’t Tell Show, the talk event at the Volksbühne’s Roter Salon next Wednesday (16.11.2022), is a very different beast. The latest in a series of literary evenings from Kabeljau und Dorsch (who describe themselves as a “label for young literary mediation”), the event invites two real-life protagonists and one professional author onto the stage. Then, in front of the audience, the trio lay the grounds for a new story on a particular theme, which next week is “Verzicht” (renunciation, or doing without). On author duty is Mathias Nawrat, whose latest book, “Reise nach Maine”, tells the story of a writer who travels to New England with his East European mother.

For his protagonists, Nawrat is joined by Denis Newiak, a Media Studies academic who apparently wants to give it all up to make reality TV on Mars, and Alexandra Weichesmiller, a business coach who specializes in helping burned-out executives exit their high flying jobs. After hearing from the pair, Nawrat will begin to come up with a plot, narrative and characters in real time. As an audience member, you’ll see first hand how authors practice their craft. For Writing Rule No.1, we’d refer you to the title: show don’t tell.
