SHAYNE OLIVER AT THE SCHINKEL PAVILLON — RECOMMENDED BY ANDRÉ SCHLECHTRIEM

SHAYNE OLIVER AT THE SCHINKEL PAVILLON — RECOMMENDED BY ANDRÉ SCHLECHTRIEM

Ever since I lived in New York, I’ve been a fan of American shopping malls, such as the Mall of America with its 520 stores. There is a lot of life in and around these centers: skaters, fountains, sculptures and the smell of CK One everywhere. At the huge King of Prussia Mall near Philadelphia, you could get picked up in a Mercedes Benz 600. Designer and artist Shayne Oliver looks back at this most American of shopping experiences in the immersive Schinkel Pavillion installation Mall of Anonymous (opening tomorrow 11.08.2023). Curated by Fredi Fischli and Niels Olsen, the exhibition goes all the way back to 2004, when Oliver co-founded the fashion label Hood by Air and stars like A$AP Rocky and Rihanna started wearing his creations. On display will be both existing projects and those that are or will be created in collaboration with queer artists on site. Oliver was influenced by the queer community around the ballroom scene of the New York underground.

Clothing doesn’t always have to be practical and comfortable. It speaks to others. It can express deep wounds and traumas with therapeutic effect. Drag is balm for the soul. Heels make their wearer walk tall and immediately lend an elegance, a flamboyance that transforms a shy person into a persona. The moment is mine. It’s about transformation, as countless Greek sagas have shown. Shayne’s Cerberos, a cute, radioactive green Chihuahua that greets you in the Schinkel Building, also seems inspired by the classics: Cerberos is a three-headed dog that guards the gate to the underworld in Greek myth. I’m sure everyone will want to get in through this gate. Look forward to performance, fashion and music events (e.g. Leech aka Shayne Oliver with the GHE20G0TH1K sound on 18.08.2023) posted on the Schinkel Pavilion’s Instagram account. It’s new, it’s now, it’s wow!

BUFFALO MILK ICE CREAM FROM PAOLELLA — RECOMMENDED BY KYURIE SHIN

BUFFALO MILK ICE CREAM FROM PAOLELLA — RECOMMENDED BY KYURIE SHIN

Berlin’s ice cream game just got a step up thanks to the folks at Paolella Mozzarella, who make fresh buffalo milk ice cream from grass-fed buffalo living on a 200 hectare farm in Brandenburg. The result is the creamiest, richest and freshest ice cream you’ve ever tasted. This small shop, located opposite U-Bahn station Dahlem Dorf, offers 12 rotating flavors including “pure”, basil and whiskey walnut. Buffalo milk’s higher fat content creates an irresistible texture and flavor that lingers in the mouth, with no artificial sweetness. While ice cream is one of their newer creations, Paolella has long been a key player in Berlin’s gastronomy scene with their handmade buffalo mozzarella and meat. You can find the products at selected retailers. The ice cream is sold seasonally at the Paolella shop, which is located inside the Luise Biergarten – ideal for stopping by before your lake trip.

MIES, SUNDOWNERS & I: AFTER-WORK DRINKS ON THE TERRACE OF THE NEUE NATIONALGALERIE — RECOMMENDED BY UWE BUHRDORF

MIES, SUNDOWNERS & I: AFTER-WORK DRINKS ON THE TERRACE OF THE NEUE NATIONALGALERIE — RECOMMENDED BY UWE BUHRDORF

It wasn’t so long ago that one of the city’s boldest buildings was surrounded by fencing: immediately shrouding the entire Kulturforum. What a loss. Fortunately that’s over now, and it’s about to get even better: every Thursday and Friday, restaurateur, artist and bar owner Johannes Gruber invites visitors to the Sundowner Bar on the terrace of the Neue Nationalgalerie. From the mobile bar, designed and specially built by sculptor and UdK professor Karsten Konrad, Johannes and his colleagues serve drinks as casually as they have for many years in their Kreuzberg bar Mysliwska, another pearl of urban nightlife. From the terrace, you can sit with the vastness of the Kulturforum in front of you, the daring architecture of Mies van der Rohe behind you, or vice versa… it doesn’t get much better than that. To make your time even enjoyable, combine your time there with a walk through the museum’s permanent collection and become inspired by encounters with great paintings. An afternoon like this helps us remember why we want to live here and not somewhere else. The Sundowner Bar: the ideal place for a vacation in your own city.

Uwe Buhrdorf is the owner of the small, fine event agency Die Wellenmaschine (The Wave Machine) and moves skillfully between brand, corporate and culture events. He is also an event organiser.

ERROR MUSIC FESTIVAL: ELECTRONIC SOUND AND TECH FOR YOUNG PEOPLE — RECOMMENDED BY CHARLOTTE KEHL & JANA MARIA DOHMANN

ERROR MUSIC FESTIVAL: ELECTRONIC SOUND AND TECH FOR YOUNG PEOPLE — RECOMMENDED BY CHARLOTTE KEHL & JANA MARIA DOHMANN

“Error music”. But don’t delete! Take part, even if you are well beyond your adolescence. The project Error Music, launched by producer and singer Yosa Peit together with Acud macht neu and Junge Tüftler, has been creating protected spaces for experimenting with sound and tech explicitly for girls, trans and non-binary kids in Berlin since 2020. This festival is a chance for everyone to poke around in a beautiful, queer world of computing and electronic music. Learn about the pioneers and their tools (like synthesizers or theremins) and see one of the Error Crew performances in the club. Intended for teens, the many workshops held throughout the Acud site offer the opportunity, among other things, to create a track in ten minutes with producer Perera Elsewhere. The documentary Sisters with Transistors is not to be missed, with the wonderful Laurie Anderson as narrator. This good and important project is to be celebrated. Come by and join in – or recommend it to your younger sisters, cousins and neighbors.

BOOBS IN THE ARTS: A SUMMER GROUP SHOW BY DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM — RECOMMENDED BY BASTIAN GEHBAUER

BOOBS IN THE ARTS: A SUMMER GROUP SHOW BY DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM — RECOMMENDED BY BASTIAN GEHBAUER

When heterosexual guys write about breasts and recommend exhibitions showcasing artistic works about them, you should probably look the other way. Regardless of the personal appeal this topic holds for your author, there’s a show that serves as an exception opening tomorrow at Dittrich & Schlechtriem called Boobs in the Arts (inspired by the Instagram account of the same name curated by Natanja von Stosch). We are dealing with something that goes beyond mere erotic interests and holds relevance in the realm of art – truly remarkable art created by expressive and intelligent artists like Hannah Hallermann, Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili, or Katarina Janečková Walshe*. They have joined forces with exceptionally talented curators Juliet Kothe and Natanja von Stosch to give breasts the attention they deserve – in a sensual, artistic, historical and political context. In addition to the desired enlightenment, there is another goal in mind: cash, cash, cash. Juliet Kothe and Natanja von Stosch need funds to bring their long-planned and extensively researched publication of the same title to fruition. The catalog will offer an overview of historical and contemporary representations of the female breast, exploring the various perspectives and modes of representation since the early 20th century. It is about time such a publication exists, and we eagerly anticipate its completion. Come, see, and support by making a purchase!

*Artists include: Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili, Jagoda Bednarsky, Kasia Fudakowski, Isabelle Graeff, Hannah Hallermann, Nadira Husain, Verena Issel, Katarina Janečková Walshe, Monty Richthofen, Nadine Schemmann, Jenna Sutela, Young-Jun Tak, Slavs and Tatars and Anna Virnich.

Bastian Gehbauer is a Berlin-based photographer whose focuses include spaces, their history and their emotional quality. His biggest exhibition to date will open at HOTO Berlin at the end of August. Among other things, it deals with the subject of oft-forgotten German-Jewish architecture.
