JUGGLEHUB — A COWORKING SPACE OFFERING CHILDCARE

JUGGLEHUB — A COWORKING SPACE OFFERING CHILDCARE

It’s no secret that juggling childcare and work can be challenging. To address this issue, Silvia Steude and Katja Thiede opened a special kind of coworking space, JuggleHub, in Prenzlauer Berg in 2016, to give parents the opportunity to bring children to work with them. While little ones are supervised by experienced childcare professionals in groups of two to four, their parents can concentrate on work just a few doors down. One of the carefully-furnished rooms is used for games; another for sleeping or breastfeeding. The atmosphere in the bright working spaces is one of focus and productivity, which has led some non-parents to set up their mobile offices here. Three event rooms, located at the other end of the building with modular furniture options, can be rented via the website or Spacebase. JuggleHub members receive a discount, though non-members can also hire them. Meetings across a wide variety of professions, from design to law, take place here on a regular basis, as do “Eat & Greet” networking breakfasts, during which the spotlight is turned to topics like starting a business or investing. Keep tabs on the Facebook page for the latest. (Text: Jennifer Prietzel / Photos: Pamina Aichhorn)

IN GOOD SPIRITS WITH SPREE GIN

IN GOOD SPIRITS WITH SPREE GIN

As much as we enjoy the thrill of an experimental cocktail, sometimes it’s a good old classic we want to kick Feierabend off with: Gin and tonic. When that’s the case, we want the spirit at its base to speak for itself — pure, dry and delicately laced with botanical flavors. Fulfilling those criteria is Spree Gin, Berlin’s first organic gin, hand-brewed in small batches in the Schlitzer Destillerie, said to be Europe’s oldest of its kind. The resulting liquor is characterised by hints of organic cucumbers (grown on the Spreewald’s Pretschen estate), bitter orange, lavender flowers and liquorice root — best poured over a large chunk of ice, topped up with tonic and finished with a sliver of cucumber. Spree Gin’s name serves as a declaration of love for Berlin by its creators, Gabriel Grote and Henning Birkenhake. You’ll find it at specialty liquor stores like Delicious Berlin or Gourmet Garage, and bars (e.g. Monkey Bar) across town. Take note for your next toasting occasion — or just Friday evening drinks with friends. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Pamina Aichhorn)

OFF TO FARAWAY PLACES WITH THE OTHER SIDE OF SURFING

OFF TO FARAWAY PLACES WITH THE OTHER SIDE OF SURFING

As we bask in the prospect of a long weekend, fantasies of summer vacations play on our minds. Here to help us bridge the waiting time — while heightening our longing for ocean spray and endless horizons — is Michelle Galindo and her eponymous new publishing house, Galindo Publishing. Its debut book is Christian Hundertmark and Quirin Rohleder’s “The Other Side of Surfing,” which introduces an array of surfing enthusiasts, from filmmakers and designers to professional surfers. Together, the profiles provide a multifaceted view of this thrilling water sport and give us a glimpse into the culture behind the board. While flipping through the pages, we came across myriad off the beaten track surf spots, like Norway’s Lofoten Islands or the West African coastline. Maybe this year’s summer break will see us take surfing lessons in pursuit of a wave or two. BEHIND THE TREE — STREAM THE FILM BUFFS’ FAVOURITES

BEHIND THE TREE — STREAM THE FILM BUFFS’ FAVOURITES

Ever feel overwhelmed or disenchanted with the offerings of Netflix? Allow us to point you in the direction of Behind The Tree — a streamlined, independent film streaming provider founded by film buffs and co-curated by industry insiders such as Jessica Schwarz and Frederick Lau. The newly-redesigned website is a pleasure to navigate — the “Playground” hosts the full selection of options, which can be filtered by categories including “The Hard Stuff”, “Kitsch” and “Real Life.” Scrolling through, I settled on an excerpt that caught my eye — for “Love Steaks” — and rented the film for 48 hours. Behind The Tree is more art house than blockbuster, more festival than cineplex. But even lovers of the occasional trashy flick are well catered for — refer to the “Cheap” section, which includes “Sharknado 3 & 4”. And for those who want to delve deeper into the world of independent film, the project also encompasses an in-house podcast, “Behind The Tresen.” (Text: Jennifer Prietzel / Photos: Behind The Tree)
