PALAZZO ANTICRISI & VICTORIA TACOS POP-UP — INSTALLATION MEETS WINE SPÄTI MEETS MEXICAN STREET FOOD

PALAZZO ANTICRISI & VICTORIA TACOS POP-UP — INSTALLATION MEETS WINE SPÄTI MEETS MEXICAN STREET FOOD

At Torstraße.74 sits a surreal place for surreal times: Palazzo Anticrisi, a temporary installation at the former No.74 clothing store that offers a unique space for social interaction. Working with Berlin architects Something Fantastic and Sam Chermayeff, founder Fabian Johow has created a room that brings the outdoors in: bathed in ruby-red light, the hall-like space features an oversized street lamp in the middle looming over sparse bench-style seating. Austere yet sociable, it’s a fascinating place to spend time – yet there is more to do, for from now until December the space is also home to a kiosk offering a good selection of natural wines to enjoy there or to go (Thu-Sat). On Fridays and Saturdays, meanwhile, the palace opens its doors to a spicy popup by Victoria Tacos. Fresh from an Art Week stand at the Wilhelm Hallen, the Mexican food pros are now based at the Palazzo, serving deliciously non-traditional tacos in vegan (king oyster mushroom), vegetarian (melt-in-the-mouth jackfruit) and meaty (slow-cooked pork) varieties. Get your order with a bottle to go or pick out a comfy throne and enjoy a session of food, drinks and thoughtful contemplation – just like an Italian aristocrat. KONG: A FIVE-COURSE TASTE JOURNEY THROUGH SICHUAN — RECOMMENDED BY CARINA SCHMITZ

KONG: A FIVE-COURSE TASTE JOURNEY THROUGH SICHUAN — RECOMMENDED BY CARINA SCHMITZ

“Jetzt bitte schütteln!” says Tong Liu, founder of Chinese restaurant Kong, as he serves us each a plate with a paper bag on it. We shake, and are amazed, for the resulting culinary artwork is not just highly Instagram-worthy, but the most intense taste experience: tofu balls marinated with Ma pepper (a type of Sichuan pepper) with notes of cooling basil entwined with delicate rice noodles. The first of five courses, the dish is a triumph of careful design – no doubt thanks to chef and co-founder Ling Ma’s architecture training, which she has also put to work on the lovingly handcrafted Chinese urban-chic interior. Kong attaches particular importance to authentic ingredients and genuine spice rarities, such as the hard-to-find “Fish Mint”, which the team grow themselves. The menus change every month, with vegan or meat options available. Select teas and rice wines complete what is a memorable dinner. (Text: Carina Schmitz / Photos: Savannah van der Niet)

REMI: INNOVATIVE FLAVORS FOR LUNCH AND DINNER AT TORSTRASSE’S FINE-DINING CANTINE

REMI: INNOVATIVE FLAVORS FOR LUNCH AND DINNER AT TORSTRASSE’S FINE-DINING CANTINE

There are few places where literature is as alive as at Remi, the new canteen at the head office of Suhrkamp publishers. Architect Ester Bruzkus has taken this unloved corner of Torstraße and created a spacious, stylish ground floor restaurant. The cuisine is by Stijn Remi of Lode & Stijn fame, though here things are more relaxed than at his Kreuzberg restaurant, forgoing the pristine linen napkins lest a young author start writing their new novel on them. Starter options include an almost meaty baked beetroot served with hazelnut, blackberries and frozen feta, and lightly marinated brill with grapes, cucumber and chili. Follow up with the perfectly cooked mussel tagliolini or the mackerel served with kohlrabi noodles in yoghurt. A main of gnocchi with mushrooms, spinach and whey sauce has a well-judged autumnal earthiness, while to finish is the choux à la crème with cardamom ice cream, marinated plums and cream sat between choux pastry. For liquid accompaniment, try the kombucha served fresh from the tap. In sum: Remi serves flavors you could write volumes about. (Text: Eva Biringer / Photos: Robert Rieger & Ramona Razaghmanesh)

OSTERBERGER RESTAURANT: A LEAGUE OF ITS OWN — RECOMMENDED BY ANGIE ZIEHMANN

OSTERBERGER RESTAURANT: A LEAGUE OF ITS OWN — RECOMMENDED BY ANGIE ZIEHMANN

The recently opened Osterberger, right next to Schinkel’s St. Elizabeth’s Church in Mitte, is already predestined to become a new favorite restaurant and meeting place for creative spirits. Between classic tables set on the sidewalk and a window facade that can be opened completely, there is a welcoming, casual ambiance here. The curated materials and sophistication with which the interior was designed to prove class and timeless elegance. Also reflected in their seasonal menu: baked eggplant with finely prepared tomato sauce, roasted cod with white wine foam, pea puree and limes, and delicious French rosé. To finish, a chocolate mousse with raspberries and candied ginger. The Osterberger is bistro cuisine at the highest caliber. SHED — NATURAL WINE BAR AND DELI FOR SMALL-BATCH BOTTLES AND SEASONAL PLATES

SHED — NATURAL WINE BAR AND DELI FOR SMALL-BATCH BOTTLES AND SEASONAL PLATES

In January 2020, Darius Suski and Łukasz Sołowiej opened Shed, a wine bar and deli that sits unassumingly on the corner of Pannierstraße and Pflügerstraße just a few minutes walk from the pair’s other restaurant, W Pizza. The space feels curated as if the goal is to build Berlin’s dream apartment, starting with the marble tables adorned with flowers by Maggie Coker from Rag and Bone Man. Tiles are offset by wood details, giving the stripped-back space a homely texture, while an asymmetric rise built into the ceiling mimics a shed. The extensive natural wine menu features bottles from small-scale vineyards that aren’t stocked elsewhere in Germany, making each drop a new experience for the palette. Try sparkling wines from Czech Republic, or wine aged in oak for 14 months. To accompany is a small but carefully-selected changing food menu: opt for the charcuterie and cheese board, or dive further into one of their meals such as the homemade three-day brisket served with fried capers and fresh sourdough. In a rush? You can pick up bottles and Italian larder goods to go! (Text: Scarlett Peeters / Photos: Savannah van der Niet & Sophie Döring)
