DANIEL MEYER RECOMMENDS: BEARDY BOYS

DANIEL MEYER RECOMMENDS: BEARDY BOYS

As soon as you enter their shop in Prenzlauer Berg, it’s clear that design and aesthetics play an important role in the lives of the owners and creators of this shop. Being promptly seated on an old, perfectly placed vintage stool, I was further welcomed by an alcoholic drink. It was just past 2PM and I knew that I wasn’t meant to be drinking before 3PM, but within Beardy Boys, rules like that seemed irrelevant. Then, Markus went about his work. He freed me of 2kg of hair, in what would be the best haircut of my life. With the finishing touch of some self-made pomade adorning my freshly trimmed head, I looked and felt great. Stopping by at Sylvio, Markus and David’s place means that men can be overgrown boys. The aesthetics are not limited to the clothing of the barbers and the interior of the store, but are also reflected in the precision of the haircuts. I can finally, after a long time spent wandering the Berlin streets, say that I have found a trustworthy hairdresser in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg. (Text & photo: Daniel Meyer)

MASON DEAN RECOMMENDS: LAGER LAGER

MASON DEAN RECOMMENDS: LAGER LAGER

You wouldn’t think anything called a growler could work its way into your heart, but Pflügerstrasse’s new beer bottle shop, Lager Lager, may change that. Growing up in New England, I loved the ritual of taking these potbellied beer jugs to my favorite local breweries for refills of fresh draft beer. Owners Robyn Anderson and André Gifkins bring this neighborhood-esque option to Neukölln, with a small, diverse array of rotating taps waiting to replenish your very own growler or smaller bottle. The onlooking shelves are filled with a colorful, curated variety of bottled and canned beer, focused on stars of the Berlin scene (e.g. Markthalle Neun’s Heidenpeters, Lenny’s Artisanal Ales), harder-to-get brews from farther afield and “whatever we want to try in the moment”, the owners admit. Tell them your palate and watch them work their magic, assembling a dream team of beers for your dinner parties or lazy afternoons on the canal. With options for both the seasoned beer nerd and the newly curious, Lager Lager is in serious danger of ruining your relationship with your Späti. (Photo: Janar Siniloo)

HELEN HECKER RECOMMENDS: MEISTERSCHUH

HELEN HECKER RECOMMENDS: MEISTERSCHUH

For Simon Schäfer, being a shoemaker does not equal being a cobbler. What brings Schäfer’s work to an entirely different level, is his focus on creating art in every single piece he produces. Schäfer started his training in Italy, in a city famous for fashionable footwear, taught by a family-owned manufacturer dating back three generations. After finishing his education, he decided to move back to Berlin. Here, he seized the opportunity to fulfil his own vision: creating a place to manufacture shoes that are both aesthetically beautiful and orthopedically appropriate. Since then, his team has consisted of 14 talented shoemakers crafting every unique piece with love and attention. Entering his shop at Engeldamm near the Engelbecken, you can feel the quality of his handmade leather goods. According to Schäfer, our feet not only support our bodies, but define our stability in life. For, after all, everybody knows that clothes make the man, but we often forget he wouldn’t be able to go far without his shoes. (Text: Helen Hecker / photo: Ben Fuchs)

AM MA — ANDREAS MURKUDIS’ ELEGANT FURNITURE STORE

AM MA — ANDREAS MURKUDIS’ ELEGANT FURNITURE STORE

“It’s not just about selling, it’s about showcasing, discussing and developing our design; the idea that is Andreas Murkudis”, explains Raphael Danke. He works at AM Möbel + Architektur, a new sister store located just a few doors down from their flagship fashion branch on Potsdamerstrasse. It is clear that impeccable style runs in the family. As well as managing the store, the team also executes interior and decorative design on site, making use of the inspiring space. The store is reminiscent of a gallery, and indeed fulfills that function on the second floor where exhibitions are occasionally showcased. Looking around, the quality and exclusivity of each piece prove that it has earned its spot on display. The dramatic design of Jerszey Seymour’s marble table or the clean-cut lamp by E15. – all items are remarkably special and unique. Whether you wish to browse, purchase or simply chat about design with the sales staff, this new store is definitely worth your time. (Text: Isabelle Kagelius / Photo: Joachim Schulz)
