PAMPERED POOCHES — THREE WAYS TO TREAT YOUR HOUND AND HELP DOGS IN NEED

PAMPERED POOCHES — THREE WAYS TO TREAT YOUR HOUND AND HELP DOGS IN NEED

A pre-Christmas haircut is at the top of many of our to-do lists. But what about our four-legged friends? They shouldn’t miss out over the holidays either, which is why Groomroom Berlin is the perfect place if you want to get your dog’s coat in fine fettle. This pet grooming salon in Neukölln was founded by Ukrainian dog-lover Darya who, having unsuccessfully searched for a salon for her own pooch, decided to open a shop herself. The salon employs women who have fled the war in Ukraine, including Svetlana and Tina, who both have years of grooming experience. The salon specializes in poodles and Pomeranians, whose coats require extra attention (though all breeds are welcome). Unlike many dog groomers, you don’t have to leave the salon during your appointment: you can make yourself comfortable or join your dog while they’re being pampered at the back.

Of course, being able to give your dog such treatments is a privilege: there are animals who know neither professional grooming nor a permanent home. That’s where Doggo Donate and Strayz come in. These brands support street animals by selling canine supplies and dog-themed design goods. Run by a group of friends under the motto “Never for money, always for dogs”, Doggo Donate raises money for animal welfare organizations with their two annual collections. The latest products are a collaboration with four designers in Berlin, Hamburg and Porto and include trendy jumpers, cushion covers and socks. For a festive gift, you can send your loved ones a ”Jingle Gebells” card. Posted to the recipient for you, the cards’ proceeds are donated to Stray Aid Montenegro. Finally: if you are looking for gourmet meals for your pet while supporting less-fortunate animals, we can highly recommend Strayz. By buying food for your dog (or cat) you can help provide strays with meals and medical treatment (the website shows you exactly how and where the money is used). We recommend starting with the taster pack so your pet can pick their favorite flavor. You’ll be helping a good cause and making your hound (or feline) very happy indeed…

BOOKS TO GIFT (AND READ) THIS HOLIDAY SEASON — FIVE PICKS FROM MODERN GRAPHICS

BOOKS TO GIFT (AND READ) THIS HOLIDAY SEASON — FIVE PICKS FROM MODERN GRAPHICS

Whether you’re after a gift for your book-devouring bestie or want a graphic novel to bury your head in during the family Christmas, comic store Modern Graphics has got you covered. Its three shops (in Kreuzberg, Charlottenburg and Prenzlauer Berg) are Berlin’s go-to for comics, illustrated books, children’s literature and magazines. To help you pick, we’ve rounded up five picture-filled publications. First up, a legend: Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist and Gropius Bau hit whose 93-year life Italian cartoonist Elisa Macellari explores through illustrations and texts in her graphic novel. Speaking of Gropius: Bauhaus is at the center of another book of illustrations – Bauhaus: A Graphic Novel – that reflects on one of the most influential periods in the history of design.

If it’s your own life you want to contemplate (New Year’s resolutions, anyone?), Resilienz from New Zealand-born author Matthew Johnstone is full of useful life-enhancing prompts. Wit-filled texts and cute illustrations help you find ways to overcome crises and achieve that all-important personal growth. Next up is Solar Plexy, a book of illustrated poetry about the realities and pitfalls of sex. Austrian comic artist Nicolas Mahler accompanies his verses with 30 watercolors that offer a humorous, distant take on intimacy. And finally: the holiday season wouldn’t be complete without a shift or two in the kitchen, and if you want to serve up some alchemy the Harry Potter Baking Book is full of magic meals straight from the dining rooms of Hogwarts. Inspired by the films, the 40 recipes are suitable for young and old fans alike. The books can be ordered for pickup at Modern Graphics’ three Berlin stores, with some titles also available on the online shop on eBay if you want to avoid the pre-Christmas crowds or shop after closing time. You can check the full selection here.

WEINEN / COQUET & VAUDOU — MINI BOUTIQUE FOR HANDCRAFTED PERFUME AND WINES BY ALEXX & ANTON

WEINEN / COQUET & VAUDOU — MINI BOUTIQUE FOR HANDCRAFTED PERFUME AND WINES BY ALEXX & ANTON

To call Weinen a shop wouldn’t be quite right: this pink and green hole-in-the-wall on Brunnenstrasse is more of a space to experience something than a store for buying things. It is run by two creative directors, Alexx and Anton, who I met when I came to sample their creations: a trio of wines made from hand picked grapes at the Seckinger winery in the Palatinate. The beautiful white, rosé and red bottles are inspired by the mythical image of Dionysus, known as the god of wine. The white, for example, is a cuvée made with Gewürztraminer and Pinot Blanc grapes that bring a tasty synergy of depth and freshness. You can visit the space yourself and taste all three bottles, though to call Weinen a wine shop is also not quite right, because it’s home to another handcrafted luxury: limited edition fragrances.

Two extraits de parfum, Coquet and Vaudou, were created by Alexx and Anton alongside perfumer Will Inrig and are intended to reflect the pair’s personalities. Complex and concentrated, they come packaged in beautiful bottles – one white, one black – that resemble chess pieces. These ceramic flacons are handcrafted by Japanese artist Yasuhiro Cuze, and each is unique. Each perfume set comes with three limited edition photographic prints by Danish photographer Sigurd Grunberger, completing the sensory experience. During December, you can experience both bottles – wine and perfume – in the intimate, curtain-shrouded space on Saturday afternoons and by appointment.
