Time slots, rules, distancing: this year art and culture are different, and so is Berlin Art Week (09.–13.09.2020). More now than ever, the Kulturprojekte Berlin’s week of art has a decentralized concept, with exhibitions, awards and tours at more than 60 locations throughout the city. Under the motto “Move it”, the Project Space Award 2020 will go on tour: award winners including The Watch, OQBO and Kunstasphalt will ride on rickshaws from their respective homes to the ceremony and you can even join in the ride yourself with a guided bike tour of the winning locations. Open-air art is everywhere this year: PalaisPopulaire is hosting a temporary sculpture by media artist Valie Export, while HAU will house the outdoor performance “Our Love Goes to the Absent Performers” by political theater collective Gintersdorfer/Klaßen. Meanwhile, online platform Berlin Views is offering exclusive bike and walking tours of 40 galleries including Eigen + Art and Schwarz Contemporary. Extraordinary circumstances aside, the Art Week’s new concept is a real treat, showing off the diversity of Berlin’s art scene and the sheer density of its unique cultural institutions while letting you experience art on a smaller scale. And if you are looking for a pure digital experience, the online Journal and Playlist have got you covered.
