It’s that time of year again… the season when we suddenly become experts in scented candles, socks, and spiced chocolate. Under the Christmas tree, it’s all about who gets to open the gift and where it ends up. While there’s not often time to think about where it came from or the journey it took to get to us. Faire Weihnachten (Fair Christmas) takes that time. The Aktionsbündnis Fairer Handel is presenting an alternative to the usual holiday gift stress at Markthalle Neun, letting you experience just how good fair gifting feels. Anyone familiar with Markthalle Neun knows you rarely stumble in by accident. You come because you’re looking for something particular, or because you want to discover something you didn’t even know you needed. That’s exactly the feeling at the market stall that will light up the hall on three Advent Sundays (07.,14. & 21.12.), curated like a little showcase of Berlin’s fair trade scene.
Each week it’s stocked anew, each time different, with companies that have been working fairly, and transparently for years. Names like Conflictfood, Berlin Choc, Karma Kollektiv, and many more: sustainable businesses you may already know, finally up close and personal. It’s about chocolate, coffee, pepper, dates, textiles, and everything behind them: the regions where they’re grown, the craftsmanship, the producers, and collaborations spanning continents. And the best part? Berlin-based entrepreneurs will be at the stall themselves. You can ask questions, taste cocoa, feel rice, and learn the subtle differences between pepper varieties. In between, warm up with a cup of saffron punch — available for a donation. For a fairer Christmas under the tree.
