LATE NIGHT ART — WARHOL POLAROIDS, MUSIC AND DANCING AT FOTOGRAFISKA

If you wanted to catch a glimpse of Andy Warhol in the 1970s, you could reliably find him at New York’s Studio 54 club – holding court alongside Bianca Jagger and Grace Jones. Cross the Atlantic and fast forward half a century and the American pop artist – or, to be more precise, a selection of his works – are back for another party. Fotografiska, the art space in Mitte that took over the former Kunsthaus Tacheles in 2023, is hosting a new exhibition of Warhol’s photos with a launch event next Friday (17.05.2024). The show is called After the Party and promises to reveal “a different side” to Warhol – a glimpse at a vulnerable artist who sought belonging and companionship. Familiar celebrity portraits and intimate Polaroids of Warhol’s muses will be shown alongside more rarely-seen photographs and the titillating video piece “Blow Job”. On opening night the exhibition will be open extra late and is accompanied by a full music program with DJs, dance and vocal performances. Art combined with a little nighttime hedonism – the pop art pioneer would approve…
