MASSE UND KLASSE — EXPLORING DESIGN AESTHETICS OF THE GDR

MASSE UND KLASSE — EXPLORING DESIGN AESTHETICS OF THE GDR

Today (17.3.2016) marks the start of the exhibition Masse und Klasse: Graphic Design in the GDR at the Museum der Dinge. The exhibition title, of quality and quantity, is here referring to the myriad products of the GDR regime which are on display; books, records, packaging and posters, all a range of commercial graphic works which reflect the day-to-day visual aesthetic culture of the GDR. Browse the packaging from hair and make-up products alongside magazine covers and advertisements to immerse yourself in the stylistic feel of the period. The focus on the East German design is not only to shed light on life during the regime, but also questions the often-held belief of “dull” Eastern Germany by examining the simplicity, scarcity and purity of design, and posing it as an equally valid alternative to the overly commercialized and capitalistic Western consumer culture. Alongside the exhibition will run lectures, panel events, discussions and educational workshops for children, aiming to offer a different perspective on the GDR regime’s visual world. It’s a fascinating exhibition exploring an essential part of German design history, and not one to be missed. (Text: Antonia Harris / Photo: Armin Herrmann)
