What is a meme? A joke? An observation? A commentary? A work of art? First of all, it’s digital, ephemeral, and often very specific. Or is it? Tomorrow evening (06.16.2023), artist Cem A. and art critic and curator Kolja Reichert will discuss just that – and a whole lot more – as part of Art After Work. Jung & Artig, the young Friends of the Berlinische Galerie, are hosting a conversation with Cem A., who may be better known to many art enthusiasts as @freeze_magazine. But Cem A.’s latest work went beyond the net. The intervention, called “Thank you for your understanding”, took place online on the museum’s Instagram channel and on-site with an installation in the front courtyard while the Berlinische Galerie was closed in April and May. It is currently on view at the Berlinische Galerie in their “207 sqm Space for Action and Cooperation”. Citing meme culture, Cem A. questions the role of the museum in general and the digital and public space in particular, examining the critical capacity of the public and experimenting with their critique, acceptance and humor. Following the event, you can continue to chat informally and make new connections over drinks, with musical accompaniment provided by Lumbung Radio (yes, that’s right, the one from Documenta).
