30 HOURS OF MUSIC: THE MAERZMUSIK FESTIVAL SAYS GOODBYE FOR THIS YEAR WITH THE LONG NOW

What better place to forget about the passing of time than an old disused power plant? For the MaerzMusik – Festival for Time IssuesKraftwerk fits perfectly as a venue. For the fifth year in a row, the series concludes its program amongst Mitte’s monumental industrial architecture: The Long Now, a 30-hour concert and performance marathon, transforms sweeping factory halls into a mix of temporary autonomous zone and time capsules. What sets the event apart from other Berlin club nights is the incomparable musical variety brought to the stage by the curators Berno Odo Polzer, Laurens von Oswald and Harry Glass: while wandering through the halls, visitors can immerse themselves in the microtonal melodies of Berlin-based group Tonaliens, listen to the experimental turntable compositions of British-born Shiva Feshareki and experience the legendary composition “The People United Will Never Be Defeated” by the pianist Frederic Rzewski. If you want to succumb to The Long Now without interruption, then you’re in luck: the organizers even provide beds for your comfort. (Text: Laura Storfner / Photos: Camille Blake)
