VULNERABLE RESISTANCE — HANNAH HALLERMANN’S EXHIBITION “INFORMATION” AT HOTO BERLIN

As May approaches, Berlin’s vibrant art scene prepares to burst at the seams with creativity. It’s an opportune moment to visit one of the city’s most captivating off-locations. On 26.04.2024, “Information,” a solo exhibition by artist Hannah Hallermann, debuts at HOTO Berlin. Set in the gallery’s intimate courtyard space, Hallermann’s exhibition transcends traditional boundaries of expression, inviting visitors to navigate labyrinthine corridors of perception within a digitized, hyper-connected world. The sensation of being inundated with facts, opinions and falsehoods quickly overwhelms the viewer. Amidst this cognitive cacophony, Hallermann’s work emerges as a beacon of introspection, prompting profound questions about the nature of attention and consciousness in the modern age.

At the heart of the exhibition lies the “Blinkers” series, where Hallermann reimagines the humble concept of peripheral vision shields, originally designed for horses, transforming them into enigmatic sculptures. Hallermann encourages viewers to contemplate the delicate art of selective focus. Does the act of shielding oneself from external stimuli enhance or diminish overall awareness? Hallermann’s work thrives on ambiguity, sparking contemplation and discourse.

BIODYNAMIC WINES IN THE SPRENGELKIEZ — BAR ELISABETH

I planned to pop into Bar Elisabeth, get a feel for the place, and have a glass of natural wine. Two and a half hours later, I’m still sitting at the bar chatting with Indigo, who works behind the bar. We eat lemon olives, taste our way through the wine selection, and laugh about wine lingo (ever heard of “glou-glou”?). Bar Elisabeth has been open in Sprengelkiez since December 2023. The name is a tribute to the former pizzeria St. Bess, which was located here until 2020 (Bess is Elisabeth’s nickname). Katie, originally from California but living in Berlin for ten years, and her partner Ole took on the “neighborhood bar” project together. As you enter, your gaze falls directly on the petrol-bathed bar counter, complemented by a floral mosaic wall. Stone walls are framed by shelves stacked with wines, while wood paneling and candles bring warmth to the three rooms, which accommodate around 35 people. A staircase leads to the lower, more intimate space: here too petrol dominates the look. There are small wooden tables and a sofa on which people probably sneak a kiss or two. The atmosphere is cozy on a quiet weeknight — Amaarae and Solange from Indigo’s playlist are playing in the background.

If I can’t decide on a wine, I always ask the bar team for their favorites. At Bar Elisabeth, this is not easy to answer, as the range is lovingly curated and hand-picked by Katie. Most of the biodynamic wines come from smaller distributors in and around Berlin. “Blonde by Nature” is just one of the wines I tried: a fruity orange wine from Burgenland that tastes like summer. Katie’s favorites at the moment are from Etienne and Claude Courtois (Les Cailloux du Paradis) — wonderfully complex and mineral at the same time — supplied by FYT from Prenzlauer Berg. If you’d rather drink alcohol-free, try the raspberry rosé Yamilé from Muri in Copenhagen. Even though I didn’t have the opportunity to end the evening outside this time (thanks April weather!), I’m already looking forward to the next time I pop into Sprengelstraße. P.S. The official terrace opening with music, bites and more is on 26.05.2024!

High ceilings, steel and exposed brick — sound right up your alley? Then take a look inside this impressive location. And no, we’re not talking about a new nightclub. We’re talking about a new fitness studio. However, good music will definitely be a focus here from the end of April 2024. That’s when John Reed will open the city’s seventh club in an impressive late-19th-century industrial building. With expansive light installations and minimalist design, you’ll feel like you’re on a dance floor. There is a DJ booth in the middle of the room, and DJs are regularly invited to mix motivating workout soundtracks while you’re training with state-of-the-art equipment. The fitness program is impressive: boxing classes for beginner to advanced levels in the dedicated boxing area are a highlight, and favorites such as Barre and Reformer Pilates are also on the program. Combine classes from an active total body workout to relaxed yin yoga — the course schedule is already online for you to browse. If you want to use the club to relax after working out, enjoy the health bar or head straight to the saunas. Whether you work up a sweat on the treadmill or in the sauna, here at the John Reed Studio on Landsberger Allee, you can have fitness, wellness and club night all in one. But, above all, the club provides an exciting backdrop for familiar and new workout options. And if you ask me, an appealing atmosphere is the best way to stay motivated year-round.

SMALL PLATES TO SHARE AT THE RESTAURANT GLASEREI — RECOMMENDED BY FRIEDERIKE SCHILBACH

With the sun setting on our faces, we stroll along Mehringdamm, the wide connecting axis between the city center and Tempelhof Airport. The large windows of Glaserei reflect the last glimpses of sunlight. When you walk into a new restaurant and it immediately feels like it’s always been there, you know it’s going to be a wonderful evening. Markus Schädel, from Schädels in Oderbergerstraße, and Albrecht Sprenger have opened their new restaurant with a bar and grill concept in the former glazier’s store. In the middle of the room stands a large zinc counter, bar stools and a few tables. They serve a variety of grilled dishes such as merguez with Provençal ketchup, sea bream fillet with lemon butter, grilled vegetables with pecorino, grilled pulpo, green asparagus, or rillette of smoked trout, fish soup with saffron, cannellini beans with baked garlic. We ordered lots of small plates to share, the table so full there was only room left for drinks. Simple dishes, accompanied by a glass of crémant, Chardonnay and potato chips — all served as though we had landed in a bar in Marseille rather than Mehringdamm. Next to us were a few locals and a table of teenagers: All generations coming together. “Just come in for a small plate or two. We cook what we like to eat ourselves,” says Markus Schädel and laughs. The naturalness with which his restaurant comes across is undeniable — unpretentious, delicious, to the point. We’ll be back here soon.

Berlin by the sea would be a dream, but there’s no shortage of freshwater options nearby! Berliners venture onto the water far too rarely. This summer is the time to change that because there’s nothing more relaxing than gliding through the day across the water’s surface. Especially when you don’t have to worry about a thing and can take 44 friends with you. And that, roughly speaking, is the concept behind Lieblingsyacht. Te An, known as the creator of Schöneberg’s Bonvivantrestaurant, has launched “Lieblingsyacht” and is also the boat’s captain if desired. The two-story boat was designed as a floating event location for private events (such as birthdays) but is also perfect for your next corporate event. As the Berlin cityscape passes you by take a comfortable seat on the sofas that await you above deck. Undercover, there is a large screen for small impulse lectures, although the large windows might offer a better view. There is a buffet and oven on board. And, should the wind pick up, you’ll stay safe and cozy. The only thing missing is the occasion — you’ll have to manage that part yourself. You can request offers depending on group size and ideas directly via the website. Time to set sail!
