Not only is the northern Pankow district a delightful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, but this Saturday’s program (27.04.2024) promises a tranquil experience. As part of the Kokoni One spring festival, a laid-back agenda awaits. Attendees participate in a flower-arranging workshop, and feast on hot dogs and ice cream from Woop Woop Ice Cream. It’s an opportunity for both young and old to spend the day together and explore the neighborhood. And if you find the atmosphere appealing, nestled in the quiet outskirts of the city just before the Brandenburg border, you might decide to stay. The Kokoni One housing estate, with its focus on community and sustainable living close to nature, is actively seeking new residents for its climate-neutral timber homes. Wondering how it feels to trade an inner-city apartment for a semi-detached house? You won’t know until you’ve experienced it for yourself.

And while it might seem like a one-size-fits-all design, there are three house sizes available to accommodate different budgets and family situations. Plus, if you fall in love with the project, you’ll receive an exciting discount on-site (details provided in the address section). Should you decide to make Französisch Buchholz your new home, growing an abundance of garden flowers won’t be a problem. After all, each house comes equipped with a terrace and green space, offering ample opportunity for gardening enthusiasts.

A WEEKEND FULL OF ART: GALLERY WEEKEND BEGINS

Gallery Weekend is finally back, marking the arrival of spring with a lineup of top-notch exhibitions. Over the weekend, visitors can meander from one opening to another (there are even unofficially participating exhibition spaces and art shops hosting special events). At Galerie Buchholz, Wolfgang Tillmans delves into the essence of image production: how are images crafted, and how do objects and contemporary phenomena transform when photographically represented in specific ways? Tillmans experiments with techniques and scale until the mundane transcends into something otherworldly. While Tillmans explores the interplay of technology and art, photographer Jochen Lempert directs his lens toward nature. At BQ, he captures the flight of swifts in analog black-and-white photographs. The timing of his exhibition couldn’t be more fitting: as Gallery Weekend unfolds, migratory birds return to Europe after their nine-month journey from Africa, heralding the onset of summer.

Esther Schipper’s work takes a more abstract approach to perception, as Ann Veronica Janssens works with glass, air and color to alter space. Marcel Frey, at Thomas Fischer’s gallery in Mitte, challenges our perception by skillfully overlapping surfaces, prompting us to reconsider what we define as two- or three-dimensional. “Cabin” is an exploration of perception: the group exhibition “Shudder Mornings” glimpses into a dreamlike everyday existence, where, through the eyes of painters like Alexander Skats and Zuzanna Bartoszek, the world appears as a movie set. Gallery Weekend is a chance to explore and spark curiosity, all set against the backdrop of the blossoming Berlin spring.

45 YEARS OF FASHION AND CULTURE — VOGUE GERMANY EXHIBITION AT GALLERY WEEKEND

Iconic covers, influential features and a whole catalog of era-defining looks – when it comes to fashion and trends, Vogue is hands down the definitive reference. To celebrate 45 years on the frontline of fashion, Vogue Germany is bringing some of its most noteworthy moments under one roof for a pop-up exhibition at Gallery Weekend. The set-up is as follows: select the biggest fashion themes from the past 45 years and show how they continue to shape the zeitgeist. Whether it’s minimalism or body consciousness, the exhibits reveal how ultra-contemporary topics actually have their roots in the pages of Vogue’s past editions. Editorial staff have gone through four decades of archives and selected cover photos and editorials on topics like vintage and circular fashion. In attendance at the two-day exhibition are some of Vogue Germany’s faces who will present garments from their personal wardrobes and share the stories behind them. If you want to make a dedication of your own, you can also get involved in the “Love Letters to Fashion” interactive area. Vogue Collection, the online shop of the magazine, is also in attendance with a pop-up selection of garms to take home. The exhibition takes place at Notagallery on Potsdamer Straße. Expect lots of style history and key moments from 45 years leading the way. Très glam, indeed.

IT’S CALLED DESIGN, BABY — EXHIBITIONS, PANELS, TALKS & PRODUCTS AT BERLIN DESIGN WEEK’S 7. EDITION

The Salone del Mobile in Milan has just ended, yet here we are already gearing up for the seventh edition of Berlin Design Week (27.04.-05.05.2024), commencing this Saturday. The festival’s hub is aptly situated in the Peter Behrens Building in Oberschöneweide — a true gem of Berlin’s industrial architecture. Here, one can discover an array of offerings: from the architectural legacy of Peter Behrens himself — often regarded as the founding father of modernism — to Bauhaus designers’ workshop chairs, and the interactive kinetic installation Canvas of Consciousness. Additionally, visitors can explore the digital revival of Berlin activist and artist Helga Goetze, renowned for her radical views on love, sexuality, and feminism, among other attractions.

The Peter Behrens Building is not the sole venue for Design Week. Various smaller showrooms scattered throughout the city also host events, such as the iconic steel furniture manufacturer Tebton in Mitte or Bottone in Leipziger Straße, where the Italian-German label showcases its furniture and lifestyle products. The Kunstgewerbemuseum presents Next: Young European Design in collaboration with Eunic Berlin, featuring 30 projects and works from eleven European countries. Heipl Berlin and the Hungarian animator and illustrator Csaba Klement, also known as CsaK, invite attendees to dinosaurs and prosecco, blending science about the Middle Ages with modern design. With so many highlights, it’s hard to know where to begin. Exhibitions and presentations are complemented by talks and panels, so it’s worth carefully studying the program. Throughout the process, one will realize that Berlin can do almost anything, and certainly, it excels in design.
