THE ART OF SCREEN PRINTING — BROWSE AND BUY HANDMADE POSTERS, CARDS AND BAGS FROM ZWÖLFER

THE ART OF SCREEN PRINTING — BROWSE AND BUY HANDMADE POSTERS, CARDS AND BAGS FROM ZWÖLFER

Among the cafes, chirping birds and passers-by of Prenzlauer Berg sits the Zwölfer screen printing workshop with its attractive blue facade. There, owner Anna von Gwinner has been printing unique textiles and papers since 2010. During her art and architecture studies, Anna developed a fascination for screen printing and has been working with the medium ever since. She is particularly interested in how the method influences design: unlike digital, screen printing requires the designer to think additively. Each color has to be printed individually; each layer prepared separately. It’s through this layering that a pattern emerges. Anna’s space is mainly taken up by her studio, with just a small, kiosk-sized area for selling works.

The focus here is on making – Anna prints her own motifs on textile and paper and creates greeting cards and posters to order. A new addition to her range is the large “Baden Gehen” bag, perfect for summer trips to the lake or pool. Anna’s collection also includes linen and cotton towels which feature the “fish of the year” (Atlantic Herring) and are almost too beautiful to use. The works are filled with dedication and precision, with the analog process almost palpable. Next time you are on Oderberger Straße, pop in the blue shop and discover this art for yourself.

CROQUE MADAMES, MIMOSAS AND HOT BUTTER BUNS — FRENCH-AMERICAN BRUNCH WITH SUNNY VIBES AT OEUF BERLIN

CROQUE MADAMES, MIMOSAS AND HOT BUTTER BUNS — FRENCH-AMERICAN BRUNCH WITH SUNNY VIBES AT OEUF BERLIN

Some readers might recognize Oeuf: its sunny interior was previously occupied by the now-closed Mirage Bistro. In April 2022, the location was brought back to life as a brunch spot run by best friends Damien, Geo and Millien. The cafe radiates good energy, with a bright yellow interior and laid-back menu of French-American breakfast classics. You can pick go-to options like the creamy Croque Madame or make it more personal by building your own breakfast. Options include everything from a brioche base with eggs and crispy bacon to shallot jam to top it all off. For those who like their brunch boozy, there is a killer drinks list including a house Bloody Mary for a fiery mid-morning kick. Reserve a table now and spend your Sunday morning (hopefully) soaking up the rays on the terrace with a hot buttered bun and mimosa in hand.

OUTDOOR FLOWER MARKET AT SOHO HOUSE WITH STUDIO LINNÉ

OUTDOOR FLOWER MARKET AT SOHO HOUSE WITH STUDIO LINNÉ

This Sunday (08.05.2022) is Mother’s Day in Germany. And a special Sunday calls for a special market – one that’s particularly beautiful and fragrant. The Soho House outdoor flower market from Neukölln flower studio Studio Linné doesn’t disappoint in this regard. With considerable skill, flower designer Misha Todirașcu combines Ikebana – the Japanese art of flower arranging – with a modern floral touch. Whether she’s around to celebrate or not, Mother’s Day is the perfect occasion to discover Linné’s decorative, candy colored floral arrangements and the designer vases to match them. With the spring weather here, we say: time to bring those fresh floral vibes.

SCHILLER MEETS BRITNEY SPEARS — THEATERTREFFEN BRINGS TWO WEEKS OF DRAMATIC (RE)INVENTION TO THE STAGE

SCHILLER MEETS BRITNEY SPEARS — THEATERTREFFEN BRINGS TWO WEEKS OF DRAMATIC (RE)INVENTION TO THE STAGE

Schiller and Britney Spears in the same line-up? It can only be Theatertreffen, which is back with another two weeks of boundary-pushing stage productions starting tomorrow (06.05.2022). Under the direction of Yvonne Büdenhölzer for the last time, the festival will set up camp at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele to showcase the 10 “most remarkable” German-language productions of the year. Under Büdenhölzer, the festival has never been a slave to classical theater, and this year is no different. The program kicks off with Das neue Leben – where do we go from here, a (very) loose adaptation of Dante’s “Divine Comedy” by director and Theatertreffen regular Christopher Rüping. With entertaining results, Rüping blends the Italian poet’s words with pop melodies from Meat Loaf and, yes, Britney (06 & 07.05). The reinvention continues next week (09 & 10.05) with Die Jungfrau von Orleans, a feminst deconstruction of Schiller’s 1801 tragedy by Joanna Bednarczyk.

Director duo Soeren Voima’s Der Tartuffe oder Kapital und Ideologie (21 & 22.05) is also inspired by a historical play, namely Molière’s 1664 comedy. But this version also draws on the 2019 book “Capital and Ideology” by bestselling French economist Thomas Piketty, while the drama plays out not in 17th-century Paris, but a 1980s German flatshare. But Theatertreffen isn’t all about established names and German plays: the Stückemarkt presents theatrical works from all over the world, including Circle Hasu from performer and composer Aine Nakamura (12.05) and And I dreamt I was drowning from London playwright Amanda Wilkin (15.05). Also worth checking out are the Burning Issues talks on hot topics like AI and power imbalances in the theater sector. It’s a line-up that brings (re)invention to where it belongs: right at the front of the stage.
