LAGREE AT THE BOUTIQUE GYM: TRAINING WITH THE MEGAFORMER IN SMALL CLASSES AT SHAPESTY

LAGREE AT THE BOUTIQUE GYM: TRAINING WITH THE MEGAFORMER IN SMALL CLASSES AT SHAPESTY

Looking for a new challenge in your everyday life? Then Shapesty is the place for you. This newly opened boutique fitness studio is bringing the Lagree full-body workout trend, developed in Los Angeles, to Berlin-Mitte. You’ll be training on the so-called Megaformer machines. Megaformer? Sounds like a motto that could define 2024, doesn’t it? Megaformers are machines about the same size as a treadmill but much more versatile. Whether standing, kneeling, lying on your stomach, or on your back, the variety of exercises on these machines, consisting of two static platforms and the sled in the middle, is almost limitless. In addition to the core theme of “resistance”—working your muscles against steel springs—the focus is also on balance, requiring a strong core. Say hello to your abdominal muscles. Unlike other fitness classes, the exercise sequence at Lagree is not fixed but as varied as your muscle groups—whose existence you’ll be aware of once again after the workout.

So, at Shapesty, it means one machine, thousands of exercises, and in small groups. In each session of “high intensity and low impact training,” there are a maximum of eleven other people, ensuring personal support from the international team. All sessions are held in English, adding a bit of a Hollywood feel. If you incorporate the training regularly into your everyday life, you should see and feel the results. Now, you just have to decide whether you’re more of a package or subscription type, or whether you want to take it all in your stride first by trying out the New Client Special. And for that Hollywood feeling, private lessons are, of course, also available.

MINDFUL DRINKING IN FOCUS — COME TO THE FIRST SOBER BAR NIGHT AT HAPPA

MINDFUL DRINKING IN FOCUS — COME TO THE FIRST SOBER BAR NIGHT AT HAPPA

Dry January, a term that breezes through January like a breath of fresh air, inspires many to give their glasses a break. In this month of clear heads and fresh resolutions, many consciously choose to abstain from alcohol—a personal challenge after the exuberant celebrations in December and a deliberate step towards more mindfulness and self-care. In line with this resolution, Happa Restaurant at Schlesisches Tor is hosting the first Sober Bar Night in cooperation with the Mindful Drinking Club. Founded by chef and cookbook author Sophia Hoffmann and her partner Nina Kristin Petersen, Happa is a vegan restaurant known for its radically vegan cuisine and consistent commitment to waste reduction. From Monday to Thursday they offer an affordable lunch menu with two main courses, a soup, salad, and freshly baked cake.

On sunny days, you can enjoy your lunch outside under the tomato-red umbrellas or take your food with you on the go. The Sober Bar Night next Friday (12.01.2024) will feature a variety of vegan and organic bar food snacks accompanied by selected non-alcoholic sparkling wines, sparkling wines, and cocktails from the Mindful Drinking Club. It serves as the kick-off for upcoming dinner events—a welcome opportunity to consciously abstain from alcohol while fully experiencing the pleasure. The founder of the Mindful Drinking Club, Jennifer Kießling, will also be on hand to provide exciting insights into the world of non-alcoholic drinks. Sounds like an evening full of enjoyment and without compromise. Just come along!

A STORY OF LOVE IN 300 ARTIFACTS: ART BY LEANNE SHAPTON AT THOMAS FISCHER

A STORY OF LOVE IN 300 ARTIFACTS: ART BY LEANNE SHAPTON AT THOMAS FISCHER

If you ask artists, art critics, and creative individuals about their favorite book, one title often rises to the top: Leanne Shapton’s “Important Artifacts…” from 2009. Structured like a fictional auction catalog, the volume delves into much more than mere objects to be auctioned off. Within the 300-plus objects lies the love story of Lenore and Harold—or rather, their end. Shapton succeeds in revisiting one of the most enduring narratives in history—boy meets girl, boy leaves girl—in a bittersweet way. After being out of print for a long time, the book has now been republished. Next Wednesday(17.01.2024), Friederike Schilbach from Aufbau Verlag and Thomas Fischer are inviting you to his gallery to celebrate the new edition. Similar to many auctions of famous estates, Shapton’s fantasy auction comprises not just recordless items but sentimental memorabilia. The catalog begins with a cocktail napkin bearing Leonore’s email address and their first photos together, depicting the couple newly in love. Subsequent entries include books, items of clothing, and a collection of salt and pepper shakers stolen as souvenirs from various restaurants. You get to know Lenore and Harold’s idiosyncrasies, read their shopping lists, and love letters.

Leanne Shapton, known for her work as a recipe columnist for the New York Times, and Harold, a photographer who spends more time traveling than at home, both have taste and humor. They wear Helmut Lang and Rachel Comey, read Virginia Woolf and Henry James. The objects reveal how their relationship has evolved over the years, from postcards forming the words “Miss you very much” to relationship guides and a Venice travel guide where Leonore anticipates the end of their relationship in handwritten notes (“cried in the shower”). Shapton enlisted her friends as fictional lovers: author Sheila Heti and graphic artist Paul Sahre. The posed spontaneous shots of the two were taken by photographer Jason Fulford. Shapton proves that it often doesn’t take more than a few sober lines and photos to provide a deep and sometimes wonderfully voyeuristic insight into the ups and downs of a relationship. This collaborative, multimodal, unconventional approach characterizes much of Shapton’s work. Illustrator, writer, and artist are not just job titles for her; they are integral to her identity. After working as the art director of the Op-Ed page of the New York Times for a long time, she has focused more on her watercolors in recent years. Thomas Fischer will be showcasing a selection in his gallery until mid-February. Shapton also traces the spirit of things in these pictures. Based on photos found on sales platforms like eBay, she examines the visual language of everyday objects. Shapton breathes a quiet elegance into the unflatteringly photographed pieces, awakening desires that bric-a-brac, stuffed animals, and items of clothing generally lack. She presents the items with the same loving gaze that their owners once shared. In the end, you can’t help but fall in love with Shapton’s works.

THE HUMANLAB 4.0: WHERE ART, TECHNOLOGY & AWARENESS INTERSECT THROUGH INNOVATIVE INSTALLATIONS, ARTWORKS & INSIGHTS FROM EXPERTS

THE HUMANLAB 4.0: WHERE ART, TECHNOLOGY & AWARENESS INTERSECT THROUGH INNOVATIVE INSTALLATIONS, ARTWORKS & INSIGHTS FROM EXPERTS

Reports on artificial intelligence today range from euphoric songs of praise to calls for more regulation. The new exhibition, Humanlab 4.0, aims to counter this short-sighted polarity. The artists behind the project explore the spiritual dimension of technology. Instead of exaggerating A.I. or dismissing it as an anti-creativity program, the artworks focus on the human condition in dealing with the digital. The avatars, 3D animations, and holograms created by selected artists demonstrate just how sensual this exploration can be. Based on Humanlab’s concept, they take us on a journey into a new visual experience that aims to be empathetic – precisely because it is based on algorithms. Frequencies and sounds, designed by various producers, complement the artworks. Humanlab 4.0 aims to test the limits of the self and show how future art can revolutionize our lives in a positive way. What emerges is a sphere between man and machine in which consciousness can dissolve and rediscover itself. There is much to discover and test out on-site, such as the “Mind Machine” or mysterious installations like the “Meditation Booth” and the “Affirmation Tower.”

WELCOMING THE NEW YEAR WITH FRENCH TRADITIONS: BERLIN BAKERIES & CONFECTIONERIES OFFER KINGS’ CAKES

WELCOMING THE NEW YEAR WITH FRENCH TRADITIONS: BERLIN BAKERIES & CONFECTIONERIES OFFER KINGS’ CAKES

In the mood to talk about New Year’s resolutions? I guess not, huh? Let’s talk cake instead! How about making the motto for 2024: celebrating occasions as they come. This year, Epiphany falls on a Saturday – perfect for inviting friends over for the first time in the new year. Appropriately, more and more Berlin bakeries and patisseries are embracing the tradition of the Kings’ Cake. The French version of the round puff pastry cake, called Galettes de Rois, can be found at three of our favorite places for baked goods and pastries: GorillaLe Brot, and, of course, Marc Patisserie. Personally, I don’t have a connection to the tradition itself and see it as a small culinary and playful highlight, detached from religious matters. Finding the figurine baked into the dough is always fun. But even if you don’t end up with the little figure on your plate, you can still feel like royalty because what’s better than having friends to share a cake with?
