EMBER — A COUNTRYSIDE CULINARY EXPERIENCE AT GUT & BÖSEL

EMBER — A COUNTRYSIDE CULINARY EXPERIENCE AT GUT & BÖSEL

Organic farm Gut und Bösel is all about scrutinizing and rethinking agriculture, particularly cattle farming. What does regenerative agriculture mean and how can it be successfully implemented for the good of nature? Farmer Benedikt Bösel and his team explore these questions in their practices. But we don’t just want to hear about it, we want to experience it. It’s possible to read all about multifunctional agriculture, healthy soils, environmentally-conscious farming and forest conversion, but it’s also important to experience, learn and understand it first-hand. That’s why the Gut und Bösel team regularly invite visitors for farm tours and selected events. Meanwhile, the Berlin trio behind Ember have been redefining the concept of BBQ since 2020, settling on a rooftop terrace restaurant in Kreuzberg for the summer season. Seats to dine there aren’t easy to come by, so it’s fortunate that Gut und Bösel have enlisted Ember to join them for a special treat.

A perfect pairing, since Benedikt breeds what must be the happiest cattle in Brandenburg on his 3,000 hectares of land. Vegetarian guests will also want for nothing – this is peak harvest season, after all. The summer vegetables come directly from the neighboring vegetable farm Ackerpulco, and the Ember team will skillfully grill them to perfection. Ember and Gut und Bösel promise a long dinner table directly on the meadows where the cattle graze. An intoxicating sunset that will blend into the color palette of your wine. It promises to be a convivial night far away from the city, where Head Chef Tobias Beck promises to delight your palate with the taste of fire and embers.

ANYTHING GOES, BUT ONLY IF IT’S YELLOW: THE FIRST EDITION OF “SUPER COLLECTIVE MARKET” BY A—Z

ANYTHING GOES, BUT ONLY IF IT’S YELLOW: THE FIRST EDITION OF “SUPER COLLECTIVE MARKET” BY A—Z

Even from afar, A-Z Space, an exhibition space founded in 2019 by Anja Lutz, catches everyone’s eye: the yellow-painted bench next to the entrance, the green-and-yellow curtain with “Flipper” lettering hanging inside, and the neon-yellow floor is no less restrained in its form. In case you haven’t noticed, yellow seems to be a thing here. So it’s no surprise that the first edition of the temporary A-Z “Super Collective Market” is entirely dedicated to the color itself. The opening will take place this Saturday (26.08.2023): Products will be on display and for sale, including limited edition prints, books, textiles and a kit to create your own – of course – yellow pigments. A performance of the interactive game “Fishing for Yellow” by Hyesu Son, drinks, snacks and music all await you. Until the end of October 2023, you can drop by the first edition of the pop-up and participate in workshops and other events initiated by the A-Z Collective: at the “Banana Museum: Sorry to See You Split So Soon” talk, Anna Broujean will tell you about the International Banana Museum in Mecca (California), which exhibits over 25,000 objects related to the banana. She’ll show you the strangest banana memorabilia and explore why such initiatives are so important for preserving design relics. On 7.10. you can learn more about butter with April Gertler and then learn how to make your own – a workshop suitable for young and old. So dress in yellow and look forward to color-coordinated drinks and workshops!

AERBIL — FRIENDLY SPOT FOR KURDISH-IRAQI DISHES MADE FRESH

AERBIL — FRIENDLY SPOT FOR KURDISH-IRAQI DISHES MADE FRESH

Brückenstrasse in Mitte is a special place. Loud, busy and fabulously dirty, this street between KitKat and the Chinese Embassy packs in the maximum number of snack bars until turning into something of a no-man’s land as you go towards Alexanderplatz. It’s amidst the busyness that you’ll find this insider tip: Erbil. Sharing its name with the capital of the autonomous region of Kurdistan in Iraq, this restaurant serves – that’s right – Iraqi-Kurdish cuisine. How does it taste? In short: really, really nice. It’s nourishing, warm and aromatic. Erbil’s speciality is home-baked tandoori bread, flat slabs of wheat dough that come fresh from the oven. They’re served either with dips or as a wrap. The sandwich version (laffa) comes with makali (fried vegetables) and lots of fresh herbs or lamb – both are tasty. Those who prefer to avoid wheat can try the bryani, a golden rice dish with sultanas and salad. Add to it a sauce of your choice (I recommend Tapsi – tomato and aubergine) or, if desired, lamb. The latter is tender and comes in just the right amount. If you eat in, you can treat yourself to a vegetable soup on the house –an example of the warmth of the people who run the restaurant. This friendliness makes up for the waiting times you can encounter – a consequence of the freshly prepared dishes and the crowds, especially at lunchtime. The separate lunch menu is well worth sampling.

FROM PICKLES TO DRINKS — GO ZERO WASTE AT CEE CEE LESSONS X DISCARDED SPIRITS AT AERDE RESTAURANT

FROM PICKLES TO DRINKS — GO ZERO WASTE AT CEE CEE LESSONS X DISCARDED SPIRITS AT AERDE RESTAURANT

Finally, we’re getting hands-on once again with our Cee Cee Lessons. As always, the focus is on learning from experts – not in a classroom, of course, but somewhere a little more exciting. The topic this time? Zero Waste food. For those who don’t yet know, we started our Cee Cee Lessons series some years ago by inviting inspiring Berlin creatives to teach us something. Whether baking bread or pouring concrete, we’ve tried out quite a few things and made lots of creations to take home at the end of the day. Now, together with our partner Discarded Spirits, we’ve joined forces with Aerderestaurant for a lesson on the topic of fermenting food (in this case fish, cauliflower and tomato). Over the course of an afternoon (29.08.2023) you’ll learn to integrate the Zero Waste approach into your kitchen routine even without prior knowledge. During the lesson, you’ll work with vegetables to make a jar of pickled goodness that you can take home with you. But don’t worry: you’ll also be able to taste it there and then, discovering how leftovers are not only delicious, but fun to work with too.

Before we bring our new knowledge home, we’ll make a toast with drinks made using Discarded’s vermouth, vodka and rum which, incidentally, are also made from food that would otherwise be thrown away. Sarah Swantje Fischer from cocktail bar Velvet will be giving a masterclass on the very topic of Zero Waste drinks. If you’re wondering what this all tastes like, then join us: we are giving away two places for the Zero Waste Cee Cee Lesson with Discarded Spirits at Aerde in Schöneberg. Email us at win@ceecee.cc to take part!

AART YOU CAN TOUCH — THE COLORFUL WORLD OF ILLUSTRATOR JILL SENFT AT POTSDAMER PLATZ

AART YOU CAN TOUCH — THE COLORFUL WORLD OF ILLUSTRATOR JILL SENFT AT POTSDAMER PLATZ

Where can you find purple dachshunds, huge shopping bags and green faces? The answer is Potsdamer Platz, which is currently home to an exhibition of works by Berlin artist and illustrator Jill Senft. On show at The Playce shopping center, Varian-Fry-Straße and Potsdamer Platz itself, Senft’s series is aptly named The Place To Be and is inspired by what in the 1920s was Europe’s busiest transport hub. Her creations take everyday life and look at it from a colorful, absurdist perspective, resulting in surreal scenarios. Besides showing in Berlin, Senft’s works have appeared in the New York Times, Vogue and other international publications. Each sculpture in the current exhibition is supposed to be touched, functioning as a kind of adventure playground or place of relaxation. Children can climb on the colorful Wiener Dogs while tired shoppers can sit back on the big red pumps of Ms. Big. In addition to the artist’s sculptures, you can also discover large-scale murals, painted planter boxes and an LED animation at the entrance to the S-Bahn. So if you’re in the mood to step into a colorful world, pop by The Place – the works are on display until the end of 2023.
