POTSDAM BOTANICAL GARDENS: FROM PRICKLY CACTI TO DELICATE ORCHIDS

POTSDAM BOTANICAL GARDENS: FROM PRICKLY CACTI TO DELICATE ORCHIDS

Budding botanists will be at home at the Botanical Garden in Potsdam, where palms, ferns and orchids await. As you enter through the historic iron and glass palm house, its rainforest canopy of palms and passion flowers covers you overhead. Emerge from the jungle into the central atrium, from which eight houses branch off, each taking you to a different botanical world. Prickly plant lovers should head into the hot and arid cactus house, packed with spiny friends jostling for your attention. One is the bunny ear cactus (Opuntia microdasys) which you might know from your kitchen windowsill – only this specimen is four meters wide. Outside, more temperate plants abound, and the University of Potsdam organizes regular events, including a session on bees and honey making on 26.05.2019. These elegant gardens offer a relaxing, quieter alternative to their Berlin counterpart and with their location – just one stop after the Sanssouci Palace on the bus – they are well worth a day trip from Berlin. Bring a picnic and enjoy the surrounding gardens and parkland. (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Benji Haughton, Enzio Giljam & Kerstin Kläring)

ART AT THE GATEHOUSE: THE PUDDLE ARCHIVE BY MIRJA BUSCH

ART AT THE GATEHOUSE: THE PUDDLE ARCHIVE BY MIRJA BUSCH

What may seem like a recently opened shop for biodynamic wines at Neukölln’s former freight yard is at second glance something completely different. The bottles on the shelves are filled with water collected from puddles across Berlin in 2014 by artist Mirja Busch. It is only a small slice of an archive comprising over 2,200 puddles, with some recorded with photographs taken in New York and Buenos Aires, and others sourced from local Berlin soil. She preserves something that would otherwise disappear, making visible what lingers in the air or on the ground. Some rainwater samples – infused with tar, nicotine and sand – appear murky; others are crystal clear. At times the water only half-fills a bottle, at other times Busch needs an entire arsenal of bottles to store a single puddle. Mirja’s work documents the transformation processes that shape life within urban landscapes. It is fitting, therefore, that the exhibition’s home is a small brick house outside the S-Bahn ring, transformed by Christof Zwiener into a temporary art space titled “when the image is new, the world is new”. Here artists are invited to engage with a historical site that – soon enough – will give way to a new construction project. THE HUMMUSAPIENS — AUTHENTIC LEBANESE CUISINE IN WRANGELKIEZ

THE HUMMUSAPIENS — AUTHENTIC LEBANESE CUISINE IN WRANGELKIEZ

Hummus again? Yes, because this small gem near Schlesi is special: their focus is on family quality, home-style Lebanese cuisine – it’s run by two Levantine brothers and their mother after all. The size of The Hummusapiens might seem more imbiss than restaurant, but it certainly feels unique. The atmosphere is inviting: lots of wood, cream brick, warm light, and a passionate team. In addition to the classic hummus and the good old falafel plate, you can expect deliciously crunchy salads such as couscous, fattoush or tabbouleh, freshly squeezed orange-carrot juice and (highlight!) the Hummusapiens plate. With a little bit of everything, it’s perfect for those who can never decide. You can get the dish served traditionally with meat, vegetarian or vegan – they’ll all leave you happily satisfied. Go anytime: for a quick lunch, a relaxed dinner with friends or on a Sunday night – still in your pajamas – to order some food to go. Also: don’t miss their homemade Harhana, a spicy chili paste to go with it all. (Text: Lisa Strube / Photos: Mina Aichhorn)

HOW TO RE-INVENT THE ORDINARY? FIND OUT AT THE ROE&CO.LLECTIVE MEETS CEE CEE LESSONS TALK ON 04.05.2019

Who are the people shaping tomorrow? How are these people reinventing the seemingly everyday? For the next Roe&Co.llective x Cee Cee Lesson we have invited three changemakers to share the methods, decisions and strategies they use to reinvent the ordinary. Brazilian artist, activist and cook Tainá Guedes will discuss her work with the Entretempo Kitchen Gallery and Food Art Week. Shani Leiderman, mastermind behind Beba at the Gropius Bau, will tell us about a career which has taken her from Israel to Germany via countless other places. Julian Lechner will share his experience turning waste into a business model. He’s the founder of Kaffeeform, a company turning used coffee grounds into reusable coffee cups. Prepare to share stories, think critically, and engage in a constructive discussion on how we have the power to reinvent our surroundings. Join us at the Freunde von Freunde Friends Space on Saturday 04.05.2019. Drinks from the masters at Roe&Co will be on hand while Knalle, Berlin’s best popcorn makers, will provide delicious snacks. HELEN AMIRI RECOMMENDS: CHUPAROSA BY KEMP GADEGAARD

HELEN AMIRI RECOMMENDS: CHUPAROSA BY KEMP GADEGAARD

The first time I wore a Kemp Gadegaard dress was in early 2017, just months after their official launch. Ever since, it has been my go-to brand for sleek and minimal design. Kemp Gadegaard is a Berlin design studio founded by Maya B. Gadegaard and Eilis Kemp focused on functional and beautiful garments. They produce small, limited editions at their atelier in Spain, weaving environmental and socially responsible production into the core. Their latest collection, Chuparosa, will be launched with a four-day presentation starting 25.04.2019 at the Weserhalle. Collaborator and ceramicist Lucy Olivia Ambrosecchiahas hand-crafted unique pieces for this presentation as an homage to the desert, to sand and to vast open spaces. If you love clean design with attention to detail that doesn’t compromise on quality, you’ve found your home. They will also be serving up desert tunes and crisp drinks to go with their stunning pieces. (Text: Helen Amiri / Photos: Kemp Gadegaard)

Helen Amiri is a freelance project manager specializing in events, and is an active member of the Feminist Food Club. She has lived in Kreuzberg since 2015 and made it her personal mission to eat her way through the Berlin food scene.
