MCM X APARTAMENTO — MAGAZINE LAUNCH AT 1976 BERLIN STORE

MCM X APARTAMENTO — MAGAZINE LAUNCH AT 1976 BERLIN STORE

MCM and Apartamento are combining their strengths this Saturday 27.04.2019 for the launch of the 23rd edition of the cult interiors magazine. MCM’s 1976 Berlin Storewill provide the setting for the issue launch of the Barcelona-based magazine, known for its charming features on extraordinary people and their homes. Even after 11 years, Apartamento’s three founders continue to adhere to their founding concept, immersing readers in authentic worlds again and again. Center-stage at the event is the “Charcoal” still life series, conceived by Omar Sosa and Ana Dominguez and photographed by Nacho Alegre. Housed in a former car repair shop, 1976 Berlin – the world’s first MCM Experience Store – features imposing displays of stone on long metal tables alongside colored carpet details, giving the space the look and feel of an art gallery. Quite appropriate on a weekend that has art high up the agenda. Stop by the Torstrasse store during your Gallery Weekend tour and grab the latest issue of Apartamento for your home design aspirations. GALLERY WEEKEND — OUR TOP TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL THREE DAYS OF ART

GALLERY WEEKEND — OUR TOP TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL THREE DAYS OF ART

Starting on Friday 26.04.2019, the Gallery Weekend will one again transform the city into one big exhibition. In addition to the 45 galleries officially taking part, numerous museums and off-spaces are also opening their doors with new exhibitions. The Berlinische Galerie will be throwing a spotlight on the architecture studio Realities:United, while at Alte Münze young artists will be exhibiting at The Show. The first stop on our gallery tour will be in Kreuzberg at ChertLüdde, where Sol Calero is using her grandmother’s artistic practice as the starting point for her own work. A few streets further on, at the Barbara Weiss Gallery, painter Frieda Toranzo Jaeger is deconstructing the image of the car as a male power fantasy. Meanwhile at the Alexander Levy gallery, Fabian Knecht will deal with moments of rupture with his performative installations that strikingly demonstrate the instability of our world order. Head to the Tanya Leighton gallery for Math Bass, whose paintings show you a completely unique image system: cartoon-like crocodiles and smoldering cigarettes form abstract pictograms. In the immediate vicinity, Ryan Gander approaches the concept of enlightenment in sculptures, installations and videos at the Esther Schipper exhibition space. OPEN ARTIST STUDIOS IN THE FORMERLY ABANDONED VILLA HEIKE

OPEN ARTIST STUDIOS IN THE FORMERLY ABANDONED VILLA HEIKE

The Villa Heike is little–known in Berlin given its enigmatic history. It was first built as the private home of German industrialist Richard Heike and headquarters to his meat production facilities. Following Heike’s murder in 1945 and the GDR take-over of the building in 1951, it became a secret storage facility for the Stasi, accumulating over 11km worth of files. The building closed after German reunification in 1990 and remained abandoned for 25 years until Architect Christof Schubert realized its potential. The entire villa has been renovated – while preserving the original architectural elements – as artists’ studios and a gallery. Two of its first tenants, French–German artist couple Johanna Dumet and Manuel Wroblewski, have transformed the penthouse into a captivating playhousefor Gallery Weekend Berlin 2019. She a painter and he a sculptor, their space is filled with large scale colorful art objects. Stop by their open studio exhibition, entitled Fire, and enjoy one of the first public looks into the Villa Heike in over 25 years. CEE CEE CELEBRATES 8 YEARS

CEE CEE CELEBRATES 8 YEARS

It started with a passion for city life and sharing tips with friends, more accurately 200 friends with the first newsletter in 2011. Now, eight years later, we’re as passionate as ever and Cee Cee is now a studio with a whole team and a sister project: our agency Cee Cee Creative. We still share our discoveries, but we also create concepts, content and design – perhaps for you? Anyway: thank you for being our reader. Thanks to our community, our contributors and authors and our fantastic team. So, go enjoy the sunny Easter weekend, and if you want to share something with us – praise, criticism or your guest tip – then send us an email. We love emails 😉

XOXO

Sven, Nina and the Cee Cee Team, 18.04.2019

P.S.: this fantastic looking cake was baked by Georgia! More about this topic soon in our newsletter. (Foto: Johanna Rademacher–Flesland)

ORLANDO: DISTINCTLY SICILIAN CUISINE WITH A FAMILY FLARE

ORLANDO: DISTINCTLY SICILIAN CUISINE WITH A FAMILY FLARE

Embark on a trip to southern Italy – Orlando’s menu offers a culinary journey through Sicily in a homely atmosphere. Each dish is named after the nine main cities, plus an extra for Pantelleria Island. And with the menu rotating monthly, you’ll never run out of new interpretations on the classics. For April 2019, the Pantelleria Island salad contrasts perfectly pickled capers against a tartare of tomatoes, olives and bread crumbs; the Agrigento pairs homemade ravioli with a rich green bean and sheep’s ricotta cream; and the savory Messina offers turkey rounds stuffed with ground beef, italian sausage, parmesan, and chard. Founder Giulia Palillo sources her ingredients exclusively from Sicily and Brandenburg, placing an importance on knowing her producers in person. Look around to see pieces of Sicily everywhere: the kitchen sideboard from Giulia’s old apartment, her grandmother’s chandelier, delicate blue porcelain tiles, and ceramic pine cones, a traditionally welcoming symbol. So skip the flight south and head north to Prenzlauer Berg for some authentic Sicilian fare. (Text: Michael Rice / Photos: Johanna Rademacher–Flesland)
