A TASTEFUL GALLERY WEEKEND WITH JOHNNIE WALKER

A TASTEFUL GALLERY WEEKEND WITH JOHNNIE WALKER

Ahead of Gallery Weekend, we haven’t only been keeping an eye out for the most interesting galleries and shows; we’ve also been collecting ideas for atmospheric places to deconstruct them with friends over a drink afterwards. Gallery Weekend official supporter, Johnnie Walker, has joined forces Tiger Bar on Potsdamer Straße to turn the light-filled establishment into this weekend’s hotspot. Guided by the mantra “Artful Enjoyment”, the sister bar to the restaurant Panama has been redesigned with the help of Stefan Marx to create a “Pop-Up Art Bar,” which will display the urban artist’s works for two days. Guests and art enthusiasts can also enjoy creative whisky concoctions from 19h on Friday and from 15h on Saturday. (Text: Jennifer Prietzel / Photos: Johnnie Walker / Tiger Bar)

FLOWERS, ART & LIGHTNESS: SARAH ILLENBERGER’S SOLID AIR

FLOWERS, ART & LIGHTNESS: SARAH ILLENBERGER’S SOLID AIR

Sarah Illenberger‘s artworks often seem familiar, yet surprise at the same time. Their focus mostly lies on everyday objects into which the artist and illustrator breathes new meaning through the use of unexpected and humorous constellations. Moving between soft pastel shades and bold pop art hues, she creates a highly aestheticised interplay of contrasts. Starting this Friday (27.4.2018), visitors can glimpse her creations in her new exhibition “Solid Air”, on view at Marsano Blumen. Located near Friedrichstr., the shop — with its lovely combination of flowers, plants and decorative objects — is a haven for all things home decor, and provides the perfect backdrop for Illenberger’s latest series. Her digitally reworked balloon constructions look like surrealistic floral arrangements and capture the fleeting flower theme in a new way. Swing by to take home some inspiration and a splash of color — be it for your walls or a vase. (Text: Hanna Komornitzyk / Artworks: Sarah Illenberger)

SEE YOU THERE ON FRIDAY: THREE TOP GALLERY WEEKEND OPENINGS

SEE YOU THERE ON FRIDAY: THREE TOP GALLERY WEEKEND OPENINGS

We’re taking a slower approach to the opening circuit this Gallery Weekend, trading Friday night show hopping for a trio of exhibitions that pique our interest in particular. You’ll find us starting off in Kreuzberg at Soy Capitán, where Camilla Steinum’s endearingly-titled “Craving Caring Clumsy Connection” promises a continuation of the Norwegian artist’s explorations of materiality. Nip  around the corner for Claudia Comte’s second exhibition at König Gallery, “When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth”. Viewers are invited to immerse themselves in an enveloping installation in which “ancient technologies” (wood, bronze and marble) meet avant-garde 4D video installations. Over in Friedrichshain at Peres Projects, Rebecca Ackroyd’s imposing sculptures call into question the divide between the inside and the outside; the public and the private. What’s your take? Nut it out over a cocktail at Peres Projects’ after party at the iconic Bar Babette to the upbeat tunes of Ribadisco/Mr Pink. Save us a seat, or a spot on the dance floor — by then we might have revved up the pace a little. W PIZZA — A HOT NEW SLICE OF NAPLES IN NEUKÖLLN

W PIZZA — A HOT NEW SLICE OF NAPLES IN NEUKÖLLN

Since March 2018, we’ve had a mouthwatering new reason to spend more time at Neukölln’s Weichselplatz: W Pizza. Opened by design dealer Darius Suski and chef Łukasz Sołowiej (formerly of Zola), this hip Neapolitan pizza joint doubles as a bakery — with a Kees van der Westen “Spirit” espresso machine, for the record. The two Ws in its logo stand for wheat and weed — yes, you heard that right. The pizza dough here is expertly made with equal parts wheat and hemp flour before being wood-fired in a traditional Stefano Ferrara pizza oven, imported direct from Naples. The menu is short and sweet: Starters a tasting plate featuring fluffy focaccia and deliciously lemony olives to tide you over until your sumptuous pizza is served. It’s a tough choice between the classics, like the Bufala, and the more inventive options such as the “Eggplant”: eggplant cream, salsiccia, provola and basil, or the “Radicchio” pizza bianca: radicchio, gorgonzola, walnut and honey. Don’t hold back. P.S. From mid-spring, breakfast will be served on weekends, too. Word on the street is that Darius is developing a croissant with a pistachio filling. If the quality of the pizza is anything to go by, we can’t wait for our first bite. (Text: Lisa Strube / Photos: Anna Dorothea Ker)

SPRING REVIVAL: LIGHT CATCHING SHADOWS AT BIKINI BERLIN

SPRING REVIVAL: LIGHT CATCHING SHADOWS AT BIKINI BERLIN

With their iridescent light and saturated colors, these long-awaited spring days are fast luring us out of hibernation. Berlin artist Camilla Richter captures the seductive atmosphere in her new installation, “Light Catching Shadows”. Through 28.4.2018, viewers can marvel at the work via the panoramic window at concept shopping mall Bikini Berlin. Camilla originally studied product design, and her preference for clear structures and functionality shines through her practice. Light is what enthrals her most, especially in its interplay with through glass — which here takes on a pragmatic yet poetic quality. The carefully-positioned elements of the installation were specifically designed for Bikini Berlin, and includes dichroic glass which interacts with rays of light: depending on the angle, new shadows take shape, making colors appear almost tangible. The work playfully interacts with the considered architecture of the building, which incorporates natural light seeping in through its impressive window facade, flooding the space with the effervescence of the season.
