JENNY HOFFMANN RECOMMENDS: DÎNETTE

JENNY HOFFMANN RECOMMENDS: DÎNETTE

Mussels for lunch – sounds decadent, but hey, why not? Stepping in to Dînette, you feel like you’re at home with friends, who happen to be amazing French chefs. The modern bistro was recently opened by Alex, Annlyse, and Ely, who previously worked at Themroc and Valseuses. Now: new space, new location, and their own concept – namely, lunch and catering with French culinary influences. Sometimes classic, sometimes modern. The team has no shortage of ideas for their daily-changing lunch menu, and their casual pop-up style means that occasional dinners and weekend brunches are on the cards. The bistro’s interior is pleasantly restrained, complementing the food perfectly. The boeuf bourguignon was just as heavenly as the delicate parsnip soup. The warm apple crumble topped everything. Finally, a good reason to savor the lunch break. (Text: Jenny Hoffmann)

DAS CAPE MÄDCHEN: LAMBSWOOL SHAWLS AND ECLECTIC OBJECTS

DAS CAPE MÄDCHEN: LAMBSWOOL SHAWLS AND ECLECTIC OBJECTS

Best known for her label Das Cape Mädchen, Josephine Gaede has already been running her Schöneberg showroom for over a year. But you’ll find more than chic capes here. Walking into the fourth-floor apartment, a world of beautiful things will open before you. Next to her collection of lambswool shawls, Josephine has another label on display: Edition etc. Ranging from cushions and vases to necklaces, the objects sold in the showroom are brought together from across the world, and can be reserved and bought on the spot. But there’s another special thing about this place: Josephine, who started her business working from home, has brought a sense of that snugness into her studio. Here, you won’t find anonymity, but a connection that goes beyond the products on display. That’s the feeling that stays with you when you leave. (Text: Claudia Maria Zenk)

TCHOBAN FOUNDATION: AN ARCHITECTURAL SKETCHBOOK

TCHOBAN FOUNDATION: AN ARCHITECTURAL SKETCHBOOK

The Tchoban Foundation is featured in our book Cee Cee Berlin No2. Get the book here.

I don’t know any good artists or designers who can’t put their ideas to paper with their hands. In my eyes, those are the most beautiful drawings: vague scribbles; rapidly laid down lines of the first ideas; the beginning of a long process of a (hopefully) successful architectural work. Sergei Tchoban: architect, illustrator, and collector, founded the Tchoban Foundation in 2009 with this principle in mind. An impressive collection of architectural drawings is the museum’s focus, ranging from designs created by old masters to the first sketches of star architect Zaha Hadid. Meanwhile, the library presents a fantastic research opportunity for lovers of drawing, design, and fine lines. (Text: Milena Kalojanov / Photos: Roland Halbe, Patricia Parinejad)

HONCA — ANATOLIAN DINING TAKES THE HIGH ROAD

HONCA — ANATOLIAN DINING TAKES THE HIGH ROAD

If you’re stuck in a Neukölln-Kreuzberg rut, it’s time to get out of your comfort zone and brave the way out west. Between the Kudamm and Hohenzollernplatz, the fine dining restaurant Honca sits on a quiet corner enclosed by romantic bistros and boutiques. Inside, Anatolian accents mingle into an elegant dining area where copper pans line the wall. Here, typical Turkish ingredients resurface in novel ways: Scallops, caramelized in sage butter, are paired with a salad of crumbled Çökelek cheese, fresh parsley, and cherry tomatoes. Fat slices of rosy duck with sumac sauce arrive atop a bed of sweet parsnip puree with dots of kumquat jelly. For dessert, a twist on Hösmerim (a Turkish favorite with a cheesecake consistency) is switched up with glossy plums and toasted almonds. But it’s the surprising pairing that makes it: a creamy swirl of Turkish “white cheese” ice cream that ticks all the boxes: sweet, savory, satisfying. (Text: Victoria Pease / Photo: Anne Freitag)

KARTE DESIGN — SOPHISTICATED AND STYLISH STATIONERY

KARTE DESIGN — SOPHISTICATED AND STYLISH STATIONERY

A Berlin-based boutique stationery company, Karte Design Fabrik is the brainchild of Liz McKeown and Gareth Reardon, who moved over from Sydney in 2011. Selling gift wrap, greeting cards, and mounted prints, the styles are delicate yet decisive; the Between Days greetings cards are a dreamy haze of pastels balanced in a simple circle, and the more geometric designs, such as the Tannenbaum gift wrap, features bold patterns with a pop of yellow. Our favorite, however, is the selection of gold foil products – in particular, the Shaking Through design of offbeat, gold triangles. The stationery is simple enough to be useful for any occasion, and beautiful enough to want to keep for yourself. For last minute shoppers: select products are also available at Modulor.
