BRIE ET SES AMIS: DELIVERY-SERVICE FOR CHEESE LOVERS

BRIE ET SES AMIS: DELIVERY-SERVICE FOR CHEESE LOVERS

Even Berliners dream of Paris sometimes – the venerable architecture, the romantic bistros, and of course the fantastic food. At least one of these things can be found at Brie Et Ses Amis. Founded in Chartres, the family-owned business has transformed into a Berlin start-up delivering original French cheese to your doorstep. Online, find your grand amour from over 150 different cheeses, or let business owner Paula Kirchenbauer and her team put together something for you. Cheese plate selections can be bought in different sizes and combinations; only with goats cheese, for instance, or choices for pregnant women, as well as per monthly subscriptions. Getting mail from Brie Et Ses Amis feels like it was wrapped by a Francophile grandmère. All I had to do after unpacking the cheeses was shop for some nuts, grapes, and a bottle of my favorite wine. Merci! (Text: Eva Biringer)

VOLKER EICHENHOFER RECOMMENDS: KLAESI HOLDENER

VOLKER EICHENHOFER RECOMMENDS: KLAESI HOLDENER

Today, fashion is more ephemeral than ever. New designs and trends come around faster than can be followed. The young Berlin label Klaesi Holdener is taking another path, aiming for quality while focusing on essentials. In close collaboration with small-scale manufacturers in Italy, the Swiss-born designer Florian Holdener creates sophisticated and minimalist menswear – without getting tied-up in short-lived trends. Jackets and coats set the tone, which can now be bought in the recently opened store in Berlin’s west-end. Hidden inside a shopping arcade on Uhlandstrasse, the shop focuses on classics: from wool coats to down-filled bomber jackets. My personal favorites: the stitched Car Coat and the lambskin jacket, with a collection of trousers and shirts to come. Timeless but still with the times, pieces are made with an eye for quality and fine materials – have a look for yourself. (Text / Photos: Volker Eichenhofer)

KW INSTITUTE: REOPENING WITH NEW ARTISTIC LINE-UP

Following a renovation period, esteemed contemporary art gallery KW Institute is back in business as of this weekend, celebrating its reopening with an all-new artistic program curated by Krist Gruijthuijsen. From Friday 20.01.2017 through Sunday, gallery visits are free of charge, opening with an exhibition by South African artist Ian Wilson and a corresponding installation by Hanne Lippard, with many more in the pipeline. Wilson, whose paintings focus on spoken language as an art form, has invited artists including Adam Pendleton, Paul Elliman, and Anthony McCall to use his work as inspiration and highlight the importance of his practices. The multifaceted program aims to explore the importance of conversation and exchange as political acts. (Text: Victoria Pease)

WILD THINGS WINE BAR: WELL BEYOND THE CHEESE BOARD

WILD THINGS WINE BAR: WELL BEYOND THE CHEESE BOARD

These days you don’t go to a wine bar just for the wine. These days it’s all about the seaweed popcorn, the secret mezcal bar, and the grilled octopus salad, smoky with hints of Spanish paprika and dots of spicy mayonnaise. At Wild Things in Neukölln, the cozy setting will have you feeling at home in no time. The baby brother of Industry Standard, quality is emphasized here from the oysters to the stilton. On top of that, about eighty percent of the wine served is natural. Just like with food, it’s good to know where your wine comes from – and Ramses Manneck and his team certainly do. Sample away to find the right match, though the 2015 Rue de la Pompe from the French Mas Coutelou wine region had a delicious drinkability I’d go back for.
