KATHARINA FRONIUS RECOMMENDS: SING BLACKBIRD

KATHARINA FRONIUS RECOMMENDS: SING BLACKBIRD

When I first stepped into this vintage store one thing was clear: It was love at first sight. What awaited was a large selection of secondhand wares presented in a very charming and uncluttered space. Here, you can purchase out-of-the-ordinary one-offs but also vintage bargains. But that’s not all. If you’ve been out shopping, or feel like a creative break, take a seat at Sing Blackbird’s tiny café. The lovingly-designed and well-kept shop has three owners running the show – although they prefer to stay on the sidelines and let the store speak for itself. After all, it’s about fashion and accessories: from shoes to shades, tops and trousers, as well as jackets, coats, hats, and bags. Certain to be dressed in retro: The Sing Blackbird ladies are there to help with any style questions. (Text & photos: Katharina Fronius)

TOTAL RECORDS EXHIBITION: THE ART OF VINYL

TOTAL RECORDS EXHIBITION: THE ART OF VINYL

What’s an image worth? To a visual audience, record covers can have more influence on our buying of a record than the music itself. Opening this Friday at C/O Berlin, the Total Records exhibition will showcase around 500 classic and lesser-known vinyl covers from the 1960s to the 2000s. Looking at both the artists in front and behind the camera, the images on display are rich with identity, style, and scandal. For the musical artists, covers are a representation of who they are, not rarely intended as provocation, to spark controversy, or make a political statement. For the artists designing covers, such as Robert Frank’s portrayal of The Rolling Stones, or Jean Paul Goude’s representation of Grace Jones, cover design was a way to popularize their work and experiment with photographic technique. Join the opening this Friday for live music and free entry. (Text: Victoria Pease)
