ANNA DOROTHEA KER RECOMMENDS: THEPANDANOODLE

ANNA DOROTHEA KER RECOMMENDS: THEPANDANOODLE

Strolling through Lausitzer Platz lately, you may have been winked at by a friendly neon panda. Next time you pass by hungry, step into the shop it fronts. Inside, you’ll find a modular menu full of textures and flavors from far across Asia. Welcome to ThePandaNoodle: the restaurant inviting you to leave your noodle-eating preconceptions behind. Start with the “basic set”: a bowl of freshly-made ramen noodles, croutons, lime and cilantro, and homemade pickled delights, such as cubed kohlrabi kimchi or cucumber, lightly pickled in soy. Top it off with a sauce and a side: The combination of tofu and avocado with vinaigrette gives a new meaning to the word silky. Owner Daeng and Head Chef Jar create their mostly-vegan offerings fresh from scratch in an open kitchen. The cozy interior is illuminated by neon installations and flickering candles. With the cold coming in, round up your friends, pick up a pair of chopsticks, and let ThePandanoodle warm your belly. (Text / Photos: Anna Dorothea Ker)

MADE IN THE EMIRATES: ABU DHABI ART TAKES BERLIN

MADE IN THE EMIRATES: ABU DHABI ART TAKES BERLIN

Abu Dhabi’s art scene is having a moment. You could go as far as saying that it’s the Berlin of the Persian Gulf. Beyond its skyscrapers and man-made islands, the capital thrives with rich cultural heritage. This Friday at Kunstquartier Bethanien, seventeen young, emerging, and established artists from Abu Dhabi are opening an exhibition titled Art Nomads-Made in the Emirates, featuring painted works, installations, and photography. To complement the Kreuzberg vernissage, early next year will see several artists from Berlin present their works in Abu Dhabi. To celebrate the opening this weekend, a symposium led by art professionals working in and with the United Arab Emirates will take place on Saturday, looking at Abu Dhabi’s rapid transformation, and the influence of culture in building cities. HEINEKEN SUB POP-UP: HOUSE WARMING PARTY TONIGHT

HEINEKEN SUB POP-UP: HOUSE WARMING PARTY TONIGHT

Move over coffee maker: tonight’s house party will have you heading home with more than a little buzz. At a one-off loft space, Heineken is launching The Sub, a home beer dispenser that keeps your favorite brew cooled to two degrees. Unpack your favorite Santa sweaters for the Christmas-themed night, where a terrace complete with fire-side drinks and bites from the barbecue, courtesy of Pacifico Berlin, await. If you can’t make it, catch up with old friends at one of the beer-tasting evenings and ‘after-work get-togethers’ planned throughout December, in which beer sommeliers will introduce – or re-introduce – you to the perfect pint. KUMPEL & KEULE — BERLIN’S MOST TRANSPARENT BUTCHER

KUMPEL & KEULE — BERLIN’S MOST TRANSPARENT BUTCHER

The meat industry hasn’t had it easy. Transparency has long been an issue in production processes. At Markthalle Neun, the glassed-in butcher Kumpel & Keule wants to change this tainted image. Spearheaded by two young and ambitious men, Kumpel & Keule is all about sustainable meat consumption. Jörg Förstera, who has mastered his craft since 2006, previously managed the meat department at KaDeWe for many years. Together with Hendrik Haase, author of the book Crafted Meat, the duo wants to bring the ecological production of meat and sausages closer to consumers. The meat is delivered by regional farmers in producers’ associations, who maintain free-grazing animals, and favor short-haul journeys of their livestock. Shoppers can also purchase German classics, such as Bratwurst and Leberwurst, as well as Italian salsiccia made with fennel, alongside French Saucisse de Toulouse, and tender tartar. For nose-to-tail cooking, less-popular offal is available. For a quick bite, try the Teriyaki Bratwurst, or a portion of freshly ground tartar. (Text: Stephanie Johne)

LUDWIG CRAMER-KLETT RECOMMENDS: ROBERT VOGDT

LUDWIG CRAMER-KLETT RECOMMENDS: ROBERT VOGDT

While the fast-fashion industry is stocking up wardrobes and clothing racks the world over, and poor working conditions are being pushed into the depths of bad conscience – thankfully – there are people that like to do it another way. One such individual is Robert Vogdt. Beneath the roof of a former lightbulb factory he has established a bespoke menswear studio. Here, garments of old-school charm are awarded new flair. Thanks to the owner’s distinguished and original taste, customers will not only find the finest materials of reputable textile weavers, but also out-of-the-ordinary items, including Japanese kimono fabrics, organic linen, or colorfully-printed fabrics by textile manufacturer Vlisco, which Nelson Mandela adored. The centerpiece, however, is certainly the suit – though the fabrics can be worked into jackets, coats, pants, and shirts, as well as shorts and pajamas. Find also exquisite accessories, such as in-house designed meteoroid cuff links, and vintage Italian silk. There are countless reasons not to pass up on a visit to Robert Vogdt – and the many unique finds are not even the best part. What makes the store unique is its aura, put together with great care, giving every visitor valuable inspiration. (Text: Ludwig Cramer-Klett)
