CEILING DÉCOR BY THE FUNDAMENTAL GROUP

It always bothered me, the ugly light fixtures that try to hide the wire connections in the ceiling, but I didn’t really question it and somehow accepted it as the norm – until last week when I came across the Penrose System by The Fundamental Group. The Berlin based architect/designer team came up with a great new interpretation of the typical ceiling medallions seen in many of the German “Altbau” apartments. It is based on six slightly different elements; you can arrange them as you wish, then simply glue them on your “fifth” wall. This brings a whole new modern perspective to the otherwise boring ceilings. Available online for 86 Euros (for about 160 pieces). Here’s a little introduction video.

FOR THE ROYAL BERLINERS: PRINCESS CHEESECAKE

The newly opened cake shop Princess Cheesecake might be the first of its kind in Berlin. Certain types of stores that are easy to find in cities like Paris, London or Tokyo seem to not exist in Berlin… For example a small boutique-like cake shop where the attention of the owners doesn’t stop at the quality and flavor of their products but continues into their presentation, overall ambiance, and packaging – down to small details like the embossing of the logo or the inside color of their takeaway bags. Some Berliners might think it’s a bit too uppity or chic, but I was missing a somewhat froufrou place like this where I can pick up lovely cakes in a cute bag to bring along as a little gift. To find insider tips in Friedrichshain is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Thanks to the trillion tourists wandering about this east side hipster district, it’s gotten to a point where a decision on which bar to go to is made based on the sheer number of its guests – the fewer, the better. I had to move to Schöneberg in order to learn to really appreciate this Kiez close to Boxhagener Platz and its nearby bakery, presumably the best in Berlin. Bäckerei Böttcher is located at Oderstrasse 9, five minutes from Boxi; there’s no fancy cupcakes, no panini with rosemary ham, but you’ll find Knüppel, Schusterjungen and Splitterbrötchen in DDR style. Sounds nasty and looks nasty but all made in-house, everything here is truly yummy. My personal favorite is the 500 gram walnut bread for 1,30€ – a good enough reason to move back to this neighborhood.

Yes, now is the time to come up with the new year resolutions for 2012 – may I suggest practicing more yoga? But to make it more realistic, specifically home yoga. In order to help achieve your goal you could either watch a DVD or choose the more quiet “yogi” route: purchase a poster by Gitta Kistenmacher. The BDY certified yoga teacher has created a poster with instructions on the eight movements of the spine. It’s an easy series once you get it, so after a while you can practice the moves with just few glimpses, but the best part is that you don’t need to adapt to your instructor’s speed – you can do it your own way. Her ten minute program can be incorporated into anybody’s busy schedule and it’s perfect for those who suffer from back problems. Available for purchase online on her website.
