WELLENWERK: RIDE THE WAVES IN LICHTENBERG’S SURF PARADISE

WELLENWERK: RIDE THE WAVES IN LICHTENBERG’S SURF PARADISE

Are you dreaming of riding the waves on a surfboard? Well the good news is you won’t have to board a plane to Portugal or Bali to go surfing; you just need to hop on the tram to Wellenwerk in Lichtenberg. This urban surf paradise came about after seven friends decided bring the sport to their own city after coming back from a surf trip, creating their own surfing paradise at a former waterworks. This unique space features a stationary wave that can be used by complete beginners as well as professional surfers training for competitions. Up to ten pumps blast water onto an adjustable underwater ramp, generating waves of up to 1.60m. Cleverly, the warmth created heats the place, so the water itself doesn’t need heating, to the betterment of the environment. There’s another sweetener too: in 2020, Wellenwerk will be expanded with a cafe and shop. Time to take to your board and work up an appetite! HEISSA HOLZMARKT 25: SPREE-SIDE CHRISTMAS SPARKLE

HEISSA HOLZMARKT 25: SPREE-SIDE CHRISTMAS SPARKLE

It’s Christmas market season, and if you want to enjoy your roasted chestnuts away from the crowded mainstream, don’t miss the Heissa Holzmarkt 25, opening its gates for a third round of festive fun. Behind this cozy, mellow market is the Holzmarkt team, whose friends and regulars run many of the colorful, alternative stalls. Family fun is assured, with a vintage carousel dating from 1962, indoor children’s activities and a fire-spitting Christmas tree. The stalls are perfect for your Christmas goodies, and of course there’s the yummy delicacies: Käsespätzle, cinnamon rolls, and savoury spiced veggie Gyros, with wild boar and venison roasts for the meat lovers. Be sure to check out the World Trash Center, where old plastic is reformed and Barbie dolls are repurposed as kitschy lamps and mirrors. If you’re after something snug and cushy, head into the Weinhandlung for a tasty tipple. Ready to brave the outdoors? Go find a spot by the open fire and enjoy a hot cup of Glühwein to soothe your hands and heart. (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Savannah van der Niet)

AWAKEN YOUR SENSES WITH UNIQUE FRAGRANCES — CANDLES & WORKSHOPS FROM LIT LAB BERLIN

AWAKEN YOUR SENSES WITH UNIQUE FRAGRANCES — CANDLES & WORKSHOPS FROM LIT LAB BERLIN

Did you know that smell is the strongest of our five senses? So strong that just a whiff of something special can bring us right back to moments from our past. That’s what Lit Lab founder Mallory Chen is working with. The Ohio native creates scented candles that are as individual as her customers, reconstructing aromas from treasured memories. In her fragrance library, you can smell your way through classic scents like jasmine and lavender, as well as more unusual options like birthday cake or driftwood, creating your own personal candle (with traditional top, heart and base notes) from soy wax. The highlight: they’re housed in stunning concrete holders handmade by Mallory herself and designed to be refilled again and again. Her creations have become popular, being sold at the likes of Merci in Paris. In the Berlin shop meanwhile you can have your own scented candle put together and choose from the most popular house mixes, while the workshops introduce you to Mallory’s olfactory world – nostalgia included. VOLKSPARK SCHÖNEBERG–WILMERSDORF: A LONG WINDING PARK TO STRETCH YOUR LEGS IN

VOLKSPARK SCHÖNEBERG–WILMERSDORF: A LONG WINDING PARK TO STRETCH YOUR LEGS IN

Some green spaces in Berlin get a lot of attention, but there’s one that’s definitely worth (re)discovering: Volkspark Schöneberg-Wilmersdorf. The elongated 20-hectare park consists of Volkspark Wilmersdorf and the Rudolph-Wilde Park in Schöneberg, spanning the two districts in three parts. And whether you want to chill or get a sweat on, the park is the perfect match. There’s space for jogging, strolling and relaxing, with playgrounds, fountains, table tennis and ponds at your disposal. A highlight in spring and summer is the beautiful flower beds – something unique in Berlin. But the park also has its charms in autumn too. When we were there at the beginning of this week, some of the flowers were still in bloom, even as the leaves rustled under our feet… (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Johanna Rademacher Flesland & Sophie Döring)

DAHEIM MANUFAKTUR — A KITCHEN FOR WORKSHOPS, EVENTS AND FOODIES

DAHEIM MANUFAKTUR — A KITCHEN FOR WORKSHOPS, EVENTS AND FOODIES

Have you ever had a Taiwanese breakfast? For those who are curious and up for culinary expeditions, I would highly recommend Daheim Manufaktur, the eco-friendly cuisine and event space where you really feel at home. Founder Julia Hammond, who used to work in design and product development, discovered that there are hardly any small, affordable production facilities for food startups in Berlin. So in 2016 she opened her own kitchen which smaller food manufacturers and caterers can rent out and where international chefs can share their dishes and family recipes through classes and workshops. I recently found myself in the Daheim Manufaktur kitchen myself and learned how to prepare Taiwanese Scallion Pancakes with RitaKahn Chen from Rice Studio Berlin. Kneading, folding and rolling the dough proved a challenge, but the result was worth it: a hearty, incredibly delicious spring onion pancake, reminiscent of puff pastry. It was immediately devoured in the sun alongside other Taiwanese treats. (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Johanna Rademacher-Flesland)

The next Taiwanese Breakfast Workshop will take place on 20.10.2019. You can find more workshops and events on Facebook. The space can also be rented for events of up to 14 people.
