CHRISTMAS ALL WRAPPED UP: BIKINI’S BOLD INSTALLATION

CHRISTMAS ALL WRAPPED UP: BIKINI’S BOLD INSTALLATION

Huge panoramic windows give views of monkeys frolicking at the zoo and inside, things are a bit more festive, a bit more cozy, thanks to Bikini Berlin‘s “Christmas All Wrapped Up” installation — a modern take on the classic gift-wrapping station. The installation — designed by Berlin born and based artist duo, Zebu — was, naturally, inspired by Bikini’s proximity to the zoo and features large animal and present cut-outs that dance lightly from the ceiling, a larger than life giraffe that safely guards a station where you can pick up a warming glass of Berliner Winter, a colorful photo op set-up and three unique wrapping paper designs with funky animal characters and festive patterns. Cheery gift-wrappers are the center of it all, perfectly packaging your purchases (whether from Bikini or not) in the bold illustrated wrapping papers, topping them off with ribbons and bows. We’ll be getting our Christmas shopping done early this year, wrapping them up here and sending out a Christmas postcard (both for free!) to spread this year’s holiday spirit through vivid colors and jolly animal illustrations. GREEN ME BERLIN — FESTIVE WALKING TOURS WITH GLÜHWEIN

GREEN ME BERLIN — FESTIVE WALKING TOURS WITH GLÜHWEIN

With her fast smile and passion for all things green, Claudi Sult — chief eco enthusiast behind the platform, podcast, and blog Green Me Berlin — is one wonderful tour guide. We’ve had the chance to join one of her Circular Economy Tours, held in collaboration with Green Fashion Tours, and not only did we learn about great sustainable shops and ateliers in one of our favorite neighborhoods in Berlin, but we also enjoyed a fantastic eco-friendly meal with like minds from all over the world. Now, she’s offering a handful of seasonally apt tours on the topic of conscious gifting. Explore Neukölln or Kreuzberg through a sustainably focused lens with the charismatic and impassioned Claudi; she knows these people and places like no one else. Then walk through one of the eco-friendly Christmas Markets in Berlin for a glass of warming glühwein as you browse handmade gifts, the scent of roasted chestnuts filling your lungs. The holidays are truly something to behold, and this year, thanks to Claudi and all the wonderful green changemakers in Berlin, you can feel even better about gifting. CERAMIC KINGDOM — CLASSES & COMMUNITY AROUND THE WHEEL

CERAMIC KINGDOM — CLASSES & COMMUNITY AROUND THE WHEEL

In May 2017, with one organic twist of fate, performance artist and ceramicist Madeline Stillwell took what was going to be her new solo studio space and transformed it into a full-on ceramics collective: Ceramic Kingdom. Located in one of the last original warehouses left in Neukölln, the space is part of the Agora Collective and, although it’s located in the basement, the windows allow plenty of light to shine through — spotlighting the numerous works in progress lining the shelves. Leveraging her previous teaching experience, Madeline started offering classes on the five pottery wheels in her studio a few months after opening. The small class sizes ensure that each student gets the attention they need, so beginners can truly thrive. Interested in getting your hands dirty? Get to know the space first, by heading to their studio sale this weekend (Fri-Sun 1.-3.12.17), taking place in concurrence with a ceramic focused contemporary art exhibition “Fault Lines” organized in collaboration with Agora Collective. From classes to pay-by-weight kiln firing, even exhibitions and pottery sales, Ceramic Kingdom is a unique space where the love of ceramics can be seen, felt, and shared. DEVELOP PHOTOS LIKE 1842: CYANOTYPE WORKSHOP

DEVELOP PHOTOS LIKE 1842: CYANOTYPE WORKSHOP

For those of us that now take and store our photos digitally, it might be hard to remember the days spent waiting to pick up much-anticipated vacation photos at the drugstore — anxiously crossing your fingers that they turned out. Like a wave of nostalgia, this feeling once again seized me at the Aydoo Sessions cyanotype workshop. Cyanotype is an analog photographic printing process that was first introduced in 1842, and what makes the development of photographs using this process unique, is that neither a dark room nor any of the harmful chemicals traditional film processing uses, are needed. Through the reaction with UV light, the negatives become extraordinary prints in cerulean and Prussian blue. It’s also possible to achieve different colors by toning a cyanotype using materials like coffee, for example. Sehera Nawaz, an expert in this field, shares her extensive knowledge about analog photography and cyanotype processing in her workshops. With her assistance, you will be able to create lasting vacation photos that almost include the very sound of the ocean waves. (Text: Verena Schwarz / Photos: Sehera Nawaz)

ANN-KATRIN SEIBEL RECOMMENDS: THOMASHOF IN BRANDENBURG

ANN-KATRIN SEIBEL RECOMMENDS: THOMASHOF IN BRANDENBURG

Wanting to escape my rural life in East-Westphalia for a while, I traveled to Berlin, only to end up in the countryside again. That’s right: in Klein-Mutz. The tricky thing about being in Berlin is that there’s always something going on but when the flurry of the city becomes overwhelming, luckily, an escape is close by. Those who crave quiet time and a vast sky with an endless horizon should set out to the charming Thomashof in the Ruppiner Seenland, located just 70 km outside of Berlin. It is here that the Thomas family restored an old stable and turned it into four bright and tastefully furnished vacation apartments. The original wooden beams give the rooms a cozy feeling and pay homage to what these buildings once were. The barn offers enough space for a party while other rooms are available for seminars. There is an on-site RV camping area and, right outside the door, are beds of wildflowers and gorgeous fields as far as the eye can see. Fresh eggs from the nearby chicken coop are offered daily — an added bonus. Recharging your batteries while taking an extended walk in the fresh fall air is certainly country life at its finest! Ann-Katrin Seibel has been living in Berlin since 2011, first in Neukölln, then Friedenau — where she has been for one year. When she’s not with her son walking through the streets of her neighborhood, she’s discovering the rest of the city and writing about life with a child on her blog.
